spring has sprung, the grass has riz...and here are the birdies

It's just fried greens, which I eat all year round, but I really do love the first young nettles!

More signs of spring:

a meadowlark doing her thing so often that it sounds like a tree is singing

a thrush singing their distinctive song from her lofty perch on the high tension power line tower; when she sees me, she alternates rat-a-tat-tatting the metal she is on and singing her song -- not scared away, she eventually shows me her fundament and flits away

the temperature being warm enough so as to smell hints of oil and gasoline & shadowy dust

the wonderful woman @ the post office who is always wearing clothing that matches the season -- in this season she is wearing a wonderful Spring/Easter like headscarf

I lightened my own hair? Ya, oops, Kimmio got a little too brave and cheaped out at the drugstore. I'd been contemplating it for a month - spring change-up. When, eventually, I get around to having the hairdresser fix the brassy spots where I screwed up, that'll be a sign of summer. Kidding. But I can't afford it until then.

I love the smell of freshly cut grass these days. It's been really warm out.

This is where this country's range of zones can be very noticeable. Cutting grass seems unimaginably far in the future. It would have to get uncovered with snow for longer than a day...and then I'd have to unbury the mower from garden furniture and shovels.

We have had another day of intermittent snow flakes and drizzling rain. Temps have been around 0C for ages it seems. Picked pussy willows on Easter Sunday (it helps to have a partner who can drive on mucky roads). Also very useful to have good knowledge of the area so we know where to go looking.

I don't get it... Was just walking and sitting in the sun ... Am inside now and decided to check the weather page and it says it's only 13 degrees here. It's warm. Not hot but really nice. Feels more like 18. 20 if you're sitting right in the sun.

So, today is one of THOSE days. We start off cold (-6 or so when I got up). Snow starts to fall in the afternoon even as the temperature RISES. Right now, we seem to be getting into rain or freezing rain with the temp up to -1 or so. It will actually continue to warm up overnight and it should be raining with a temp around 8 when I get up tomorrow.

It snowed all day here. Beautiful, fluffy, continuous snow flakes. If it were December, it would have put a smile on everyone's face. What a difference it makes when it is April!!! Now it's windy and my dog and I will become intrepid walkers.

Another sign of spring:

my father and i outside his place of dwelling
stopping to witness two white moth/butterflies -- the 1s with a tiny black spot on each wing
one lying on their back nestled gently in the grass, abdomen up and pulsing
the other flitting up and then down to touch the other
we took our pictures & films and tried to get closer
they took off, eh, and went their separate ways -- i noticed just how far & fast they can fly, for such tiny creatures -- i wonder if they get airsick from all the gyrating around?

Maybe that explains how all Mothers have amazing environmental awareness
'the eyes on the back of the head' ability :3

Well, you do notice that there's never a carsick Mother in the car. (Although my own mother was desperately seasick, and would never voluntarily put herself on top of a body of water larger than a bathtub, a disadvantage in a land of lakes, including living a 5 minute jog from one.)

Today's weather was sunny- yay! Definitely spring like. This afternoon I had a cup of tea outside - on the south side of the house - wearing a fleece jacket. Haven't done that since the fall.

Another sign of spring was the group of kids (aged around nine or so) riding their bikes through the mud with great glee. It was good to see.

Today is cavorting with the bananna slugs in the forest :3

Yellow & orange & black & spotted ones and green ones

Raver slugs -- used to encounter them a lot during elementary school field trips

...still too cold for bugs, which is, in some ways, a yay! (Only a couple of miles outside of town, blackfly season will start soon, and then walks with the dogs on the rail trails will have to be suspended for a few weeks.)
