Cover band First to Eleven took 2025 out with one of the songs that defines "heavy metal power ballad" and in doing pays tribute to one of music's biggest losses in 2025: "Momma I'm Coming Home" by the late Ozzy Osbourne. Great rendition, too.

I watched Pearl Jam in Song Sung Blue ... yesterday! It resembled J' Eli Rolling ... still grungier than some leaders ... subtly!

A couple more from the same set. This was recorded at a studio in Florida called Realm26 and is being co-posted by the band and the studio.
And the full set is now up. At 5 songs in 13 minutes, Pacifica really are a very different breed of band from my usual metal and prog. Those bands would only get 2-3 songs into that time at most and some, like Nightwish, even have songs longer than the whole set. But this brand of bright, melodic alt pop-rock has its own appeal and the duo are really showing serious talent as they develop. I saw some footage from the tour of Japan they did before Christmas and was quite impressed with both their stage presence and the size and enthusiasm of the crowds. Apparently, they sold out four of the dates.

To remind, the band members are Ines on our left on guitar and vocals and Martina on our right (with glasses) on bass and vocals. The drummer is really good but not a band member, just a session player for this performance. Ditto the string players.

Yaaas! I missed this. Nardwuar (the Human Serviette) is being appointed to the Order of Canada. I’ve mentioned him before. He’s a prolific, whip smart, music historian and interviewer - since the 90’s. He got popular interviewing bands in the grunge scene. He’s a total dork, too - that’s his shtick - and I’m proud of him.

I saw that. To be honest, I only knew who he was because of posts by you and someone (DL, maybe?) else on here.

Last night we watched/listened to Travis Dolter, a singer/songwriter from Alberta. Neither of us were impressed - sort of average, I guess. Seriously doubt he'll become a major player in the music field. Enjoyed the lead guitarist, the drummer overwhelmed the rest of the band several times.. We wouldn't pay to see this group again. Anybody else watched him?

That sounds like a problem with the mix rather than the drummer. The tech should have eased off the mikes around the drummer or given more to the vocalist (yes, I've been hanging out with music people too much). I run into it with metal recordings where the rhythm section (bass and drums) get over-emphasized in livestreams and recordings and you kind of lose the vocals.

Never heard of him but the bio on his website sounds like he's mostly a regional artist still, basically just in the prairies. No Junos or CCMAs (Canadian Country Music Awards) or anything like that, just provincial awards in Alberta.

This was in a small town. Likely they did the sound system themselves.

I listen and read a great deal ... and much disappears down an unknown shaft ... lord that's deep ... like waters at the bottom ... a floater? Water carrier ...

Saw that on some other sites. Never a "deadhead" per se but certainly enjoyed some of the music.

A couple of musicians that Diana Fox Carney highlighted today in her chat, when asked what do you listen to when running?

Death metal. Well, extreme metal. I listen to several varieties. But today it's a new (to me) melodic death metal band that was recommended by my favourite metal YouTuber.

About as far from Death Metal as it gets....Old Lesbian "Metal". Not enamored of Ferron's musical style always, but I love her lyrics, and well...her.

"Last night I dreamed Joni Mitchell cut her hair and changed her name to Gaia. And she spoke to me in a confident air and said... "You better push the edge of Maya." You push the edge or fall off the ledge, that's how it feels this morning. I've got my rouge-pink sky, my purple mountain nearby and it seems like a very good day to be born in. Oh holy light... you push me through what I could never get trough... do we call this a second sight?
So no, I'm not sad, I'm feeling good... in fact in many ways I've never felt better. I'm back from the war between should and bad and I know me now... down to the letter. The hardest thing I ever tried to do is stay in one place and just try to come through. I love me some now, I want to love you true, and spend some time in the garden. Oh, the suspense of it all... all little seed in the soil, a little sunshine and toil... can we call it a second sense? I can't wait for those carrots to push through, can't wait for the smell of the morning dew. I'll plant a sunflower and a rosebush too, and say... Maya
You know, day after day in the driver's seat is not always the greatest place to be. You''ve got to be watching for potholes and places to eat, and that can make you stressful company. And to never know when a deer may show in your path and you have to drive more carefully. It seems like I've been driving now for a long, long time... Am I taking this driving thing seriously. Oh, the romance of it all... Somebody tells you it's tough and you've gotta act rough and you spend your whole time looking for balance.
I live with me 'cause it's simple math and I live with you because I want to. Your golden joie de vie brings me lots of laughs and gives me a sense of what I can do. It was always worry dolls, and loves back door and haunted halls to the ocean floor where I'd lick my wounds behind a rust-warped door and try to prove that love couldn't find me. Oh the dance of it all... there's some beautiful people that I plum wore out... do we call this a second chance? I can't wait for those carrots to push through, I can't wait for the smell of the morning dew. I'll plant a sunflower and a rosebush too, and a rosebush too, and say... Maya... here's a rose like you."

My in car music today was Polish progressive post-metal band Blindead 23. The "23" is because they are the successor to "Blindead", which dissolved in 2022. I am not clear on whether the name is some kind of weird wordplay on "Blinded" and "Blind dead" or maybe means something in Polish. Regardless, they put out some nice, complex prog metal on their "debut" album (given their history and the fact that most of the members are veterans of other band, it feels a bit odd to call it a "debut").

"Immersion I" is the leadoff track from Deuterium.

Today was the day. Brilliant Vancouver musician/composer/producer Devin Townsend unleashed The Moth on the music world. More than an hour of elaborate prog and metal with orchestral and choral backing. And then there's "The Afterlife", a bonus disc in the deluxe edition that is composed entirely of the orchestral and choral tracks. So another hour and a bit for a total of two hours. And its wild, wonderful stuff. Besides Devin, you have guitar legend Steve Vai appearing on one track (Devin began his career in Vai's band), and vocalists Anneke van Giersbergen and Lynne Wu contributing female vocals. Anneke is an old friend of Devin's who has worked with him many times. Lynne is the lead singer of Chinese band Ou, whose debut album was produced by Devin.

A couple tracks that give a sense of how diverse this album is. I am going to be very very disappointed if this doesn't land Devy another Juno nomination, maybe another win. Unfortunately, the more mainstream industry types who tend to deal in award shows likely won't know what to make of it.

Songs must be sung as they are hung out there from within ...

The innate is misty and played over and over Sam ... often unobserved by ... disinterested sectors!

Just sane ...
