pinga when my friend's dtr was at school in Nfld - my friend discovered Well.ca. Tons of nifty snack food (healthy stuff too!) that she would order up online & have it shipped there - difficult to get some stuff there too & her dtr was a 'foodie' - so it worked well. Sometimes she'd just send a surprise box for no reason at all. Shipping is free over a certain amount ordered too :-) MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) also often has free shipping offers - stuff for the outdoors enthusiast.

Seeler - it sounds like you'll be eating your way through the festive season - so much going on - makes me smile.

There are those that say nothing is quest yahn able ... as long as you hold onto your cheeks when in uproarious laughter ...

My husband came home with a box of macintosh apples that had been given to him. I took 40 , all good size apples and started applesauce on Wed.

Had to get containers and so didn't finish until today. I have 20 cups of delicious applesauce for the freezer.

Think that the next 40 apples will be sliced, dusted with cinnamon and sugar and frozen for Apple crisp

Oh, you lucky one. I have not had homemade applesauce in ages (apple crisp, yes, but not apple sauce).

I just delivered nine dozen butter tarts - pecan and raisin - for our Fabulous Food Fair tomorrow (plus a banana pecan bread). There's a little tin here of the "reject tarts" - the ones deemed by me unsaleable due to sticking/breaking, filling tipping while de-panning, etc. They still taste pretty good. The ones with the real local maple syrup and the toasted pecans are particularly tasty.

*Bette rubs her increasing girth ruefully thinking of the breakage that has fed her already today.*

Is there a difference between a pecan tart and a pecan butter tart?

Well, my pecan butter tarts are just the same basic recipe inherited from an old Ontario farm grandmother of a friend (with some minor variations in sugar and syrup types dictated by my pantry contents and my mood) poured over either raisins (pre-soaked in rum if I've been so inclined), toasted pecans, toasted walnuts, or craisins.

I think those stiffer-crusted pecan-heavy tarts are more of a southern U.S.-type pie.

A Southern US pecan pie is a heavier beast, for sure, but I love them dearly and I have it at least once whenever I'm down there. If I lived in the US South, I'd probably weight 250 lbs between pecan pie, biscuits and gravy, and other such Southern delicacies.

I'm not familiar with the US things (or pecans in butter tarts for that matter). I've often heard butter tarts explained to Americans like pecan pie without the nuts.

I have a sister who dislikes walnuts, a nephew-in-law with an aversion to raisins, so I'm used to taking basic recipes and changing them around.

Last time I made a birthday cake for our Tuesday Night Progressive Xianity group, I divided the basics of the batter into thirds, then made a gluten free cake, a regular cake, a spice-free cake. Then iced them all because the icing was safe for all. I have no vegans (as yet) in the group...

You can have some virtual applesauce.
There is a bowl on the counter, nice and warm.

Pork roast wil be ready in a bit.

yum yum And here I was planning fish and chips for dinner (In my defense I made meatloaf on Wednesday and it provided real home-cooking for two days.

I have enjoyed the odd pecan butter tart, but they were never a Christmastime favorite in my family. Our holiday baking was shortbread cookies, tortiere, and chocolate scruncheroons.

Tarts were a year-round treat for us, not something associated with Christmas (but I don't think anything in this discussion suggests that intent). Christmas baking tended to be shortbread cookies, fruitcake (homemade), and squares.
