There are times on our hill i would love a melt, but , we stick with a long gravel drive which is good for nature and the ATV with plow.

Just don't let up off the gas going up and ensure setup properly for run down the hill

Our cottage has a fairly steep hill down from the road with just gravel. When they lived up there fulltime, my aunt and uncle parked in a clear space at the top and walked down. It was really too steep for anything without four wheel drive in the winter and they drove an Accord when they first moved up.

Or, you know, one could actually shovel their driveway. Just a thought
I live near quite a few empty nesters and they have money. Enough money that snow melt systems are not a rarity near me. Still, I don't wish the owners the heart attacks that can befall a rather sedentary lifestyle individual who suddenly is working hard in the cold air. And there are very attentive landscaping companies here who guarantee to clear your driveway within X hours of a snowfall. They work all night in exchange for good money. They cut more half the lawns in the area, gather the leaves and tend the gardens, and snow clearing keeps them occupied the rest of the year.

Snow melt systems are mandatory on exterior parking garage ramps in Canada for obvious reasons. Then rich people decided they made winter optional. But you are heating the great outdoors when there are options. There is also the competing argument that snow melt systems negate the use of road salt. That's great until the melt water reaches the road and sidewalk and freezes solid beyond the scope of the glycol loops.

I am still shoveling but looking at snow clearing. My only concern is timing. Our street is seemingly last on the list to be ploughed so they could have my driveway nicely cleared and then I could still get home from work to have a heap from the plough to get through. Or the ploughs might show up the next day after the storm is long over. If they can handle that timing, then maybe I'll switch. Not so much my ticker I am worried about (it seems to be in decent condition still in spite of my suckish genetics on that front) as my (bleep)ing back.

We have a local snow removal company that is becoming famous with their you-tube videos. They also do lawns and leaf removal. They had an ice cream party last spring for all their customers and last weekend they had a games and pizza day. Plus they are giving away a new car. Every dollar spent by a customer is an entry into the draw for a car.

Did I mention I'm looking at a new vehicle for my parents? This area gets plowed, but we're in a snowbelt (ski are after all) and streamers off Lake Huron can hit with little warning. Looking at a Subaru Forester or similar. Maybe an awd EV. We'll see. But it has to be able to clear a few inches of snow because my folks make the WORST decisions about when to go to the grocery store.

My mom still shovels the front porch. Won't let me get a service to do it.

That's what my little brother is driving now. He seems pretty happy with it so I might look at it when Mrs. M finally convinces me to replace the CR-V (which, to be honest, doesn't need replacement except in her head). Though I imagine we'll just go with a new CR-V. We've been through two of them now (an '06 and a '17) and have had no real complaints. I imagine the new one will be similarly equipped to my '23 Civic but with AWD so I'd be fine with it, just don't see a need to go there yet.

I would like to thank WC2 for providing a place for me to converse with myself regarding complex spiritual matter within a virtual complex that would be ignored by all others that do not believe in unknowns like a conversation with self ... the existence of self normally being denied as the self was anciently known as the soul and thus beyond familiarity ... very alien to say little and producing small things ... even if they scream a lot in the dark ...

It is quite a fabric really as the ancient bishops referred to the non secular fabric ... story of creation of dislikeable entities ?

Check out the character and personality of "entity"! It may mean nothing to a mortal ...
