Room For All

I'll join everyone for a morning smackeral. In a few minutes I'll drop off a fresh baked loaf (still in the oven). We are hunkered down and so glad the medical stuff was yesterday as the roads are worse today. Actually we would have had to cancel today. Even so we are happy that we aren't getting the worst of the snowfall - poor Regina and down into the southeast!

I suppose there is no gardening happening at Kay’s yet.

I have started to take my e-bike to work. 30 minutes from putting my shoes on to sitting down at my desk, about 17 minutes pure driving/ biking time. Maybe I am a bit out of shape. I came past two deer this morning, they were about 30 ft away and only looked up while chewing. It is a bit chilly in the morning, just 2 degrees, but 11 in the afternoon. The exercise definitely gives my energy.

My friends that have them only use the power when they can't keep up with someone, or are running out of energy (up hills, or from peddling a bunch)

Confused about exercise require to power e-bike?
An e bike only supports your own pedal power, it gives you a boost according to how much you set it at. It never just drives you. So I use it going uphill at a setting where I can make it all the way up, but still breathe heavily. It lets me bike at a speed of 26 km/ h on a flat path, which I probably couldn't do consistently without the additional power. It gives me exercise, because I would likely not bike to work if it was a regular bike, because of the hills and me getting there all sweaty.

Good morning! Happy Friday! Wine glasses will be in the next budget. Safe trips for medical appointments, e-bike exercise, booster shots and weather, and fresh-baked loaves are on our minds today, as well as many other things. Let us gather round the Coffee Cart for debriefing, for conversation, for support, and of course, for hot beverages. All is ready, c'mon in.

Even wine glasses have a swirl to eM! Like pigs off to heaven when I'm moderate ... and do not reveal where that came from ... I just claim: "I don't know God didit!"

Tyrannical authority does not affiliate with medium ... psyche or nought ... they prefer silence and thus stills and white lightning along with other jolts! Holes in space???? Einstein called eM gravid imples ... it didn't impress the hard cases ... no impulse? Just another bonk in the dark ... bonkers???

What does that mean in the UK ... anything like the unsinkable Fanny? .... Molly ...

I demoed one a couple of years ago. It was a Trek, so a pretty nice one. That one had a small screen and a thumb switch on the right handlebar. You selected your level of power assist, 1-5 I recall. At 1, when you started pedalling, you could sort of feel a little extra speed kick in, but you still had work to do to get it moving. At 5, it was ludicrous. Say you want to climb a hill. You pedal like you're having a leisurely ride in a park, and the bike will power you up the hill like magic.

Your range will be heavily impacted at the higher setting, but used sparingly on hills, it will get you where you're going within reason.

I used to not like them, but I see the point. For one, you can have bike touring operations and explore mountains without hyperventilating. You can commute without breaking a sweat, as discussed. A lesser rider can keep up with a group of better riders for the social aspect of riding.

On the downside, they are *heavy*. The motor and batteries make handling awkward, but the variable pedal-assist nature of them means you get as much of a workout as you want.

They are also expensive, but so are bikes in general. I'm actually surprised that they are not much more than other high end bikes.

I would not buy one. Not yet. If my wife wanted to ride and keep up with my daughter and I, we would get one for her. We would just abandon Zach for an hour. Give him a screen and a couple of granola bars and we should be good.

A lot of people use ebikes around here. They are good for commuting and we have enough hills that I'm sure make the assist great. If I were commuting or maybe even if I lived more near the centre of the city I could see myself using one for regular errands......if it ever stops raining. :)

Yeah, while I still enjoy riding my old hybrid bike, I can see where if I was doing it more for sightseeing or fresh air than exercise, I might benefit. With my joints getting creakier all the time, I am finding myself moving away from cycling to walking/hiking more and more and maybe the assist from the e-bike might reverse that trend.

The bikes I'm into are expensive because they are light. Carbon fibre everything these days is the norm. Literally, people have carbon fibre seats. Racers will joking call a saddle with padding a "sofa".

So the concept of adding batteries and a motor is foreign to me. I like to be able to flick my bike around too much. My "I'm too old for this s**t" decision has been to go with a full suspension bike because it's easier on the back and joints. Claire has a hardtail because she wants something that climbs like a mountain goat because that's where she passes the boys and she gets a huge charge out of that.

I have my son's old road bike in the basement (he only took his mountain bike to Ottawa). Even with just a carbon fork and the rest aluminum it is amazingly light. I can't imagine what a full carbon bike would be like. And, yeah, I have tried it a couple times and that seat ... ugh. My behind no likey.
