I still conclude that the wholly thing doesn't know much ... or we wouldn't be in the mess we're in that approaches chaos ... that defines human nebulae ... right? Intelligence is beyond us because of deep seated rejection ... folks do tend to despise knowledge in choice of emotions primaily ... and from there things get stunned and shocking! Some alien thing bolted out ...

Chemguy had some work calls today, no the products are not tested to -50. Yes the fluids likely are gelling.
Yikes.
The Lower Mainland and the island would explode if they ever experienced -40. The buildings don't have adequate insulation and the infrastructure isn't there for those extreme temps. We'll see maybe -10 or 11
Even in Southwestern Ontario, getting much below -10 is not that common. We've had the odd very cold winter and even then, it was getting down to maybe -20 plus a wind chill to get to maybe -30.

I remember some -30 in London and Toronto. That temperature in proximity to the Great Lakes is nasty. When I was in the army reserve our winter camping weekend happened on a weekend that had -15 or so temps. I thought that was cold...... :ROFLMAO: There is some truth to the idea of dry cold. Still cold is cold and -30 or -40 is COLD.

I was surprised to learn a few decades ago that most vehicles manufactured in Canada did mot come with block heaters because most drivers in Canada do not need them. It almost never goes below -10C in most of the Maritimes, souther BC, and Southern Ontario and that is where most Canadians live. The Ottawa Valley does get colder, but we have not plugged in a block heater since we moved here. Not sure the car we got two years ago has a block heater.
I had a course at the end of March, 2002 in Penticton, and the first day was -20 C. It was a tough spring for some fruit crops.

We bought a car in Grande Prairie, AB in 2000. The block heater had not been installed. That should have been a clue about the quality of the dealer. They did ultimately install the block heater. That was just the beginning...

Yeah. Halifax was terrible for wet cold, too. Mrs. M lived there for one of their worst winters to that time (early 90s) and I did visit once or twice (this was pre-marriage).

But around here, we might get a day or two of really cold weather in January or February at a time, not long stretches. Whereas the -10 or -15 stuff can go on for days.

Yeah, I have never found a need for one in Southwestern Ontario for sure. I suspect that winter is part of the reason we tend to huddle along the border (it also has better, more reliable transportation routes for the most part, e.g. the St. Lawrence Seaway, and easy access to US markets).

There can also be a spell of warm weather in January.

There was one cold spell where block heaters were needed. I was fine with my Honda. A block heater would not have been usable anyway. Our apartment building near Fanshawe and Adelaide had no outlets to plug them into.

You do remember I grew up in London, right?

Yep, I remember.

That's always an issue with being in an apartment. My first apartment in Hamilton didn't have power accessible from the parking lot and even the small townhouse we owned there for a few years would have required an extension cord, I think. The apartment building in between included indoor parking, though. With current house, we always make sure both cars can be indoors in the winter and both have outlets nearby so if we ever needed block heating, it would be possible.

Which can create some havoc of its own if the temperature suddenly drops again before things dry out from melting. Suddenly you've gone from snow to glacial ice. Yippee?

Anybody stocking up with candles, blankets, water, gas, cooking turkey ahead, etc...in case the power goes off during the coming storm in Ontario?

I'm not sure how close we got to here, I know colder than downtown and the official temperature in the closest town in the GRE was colder too. Likely got near -40c where we are, not -50 thankfully. On the main floor I keep feeling a cold spot, it's above the air intake for the furnace. It has caused the waterlines that run near it to freeze in the past, Chemguy shoved some foam between them to prevent that from happening again. I think we need to insulate it better though. Water starts cold, then becomes ice cold before it warms up, but at least it actually runs in all taps.

We are in decent shape normally in that regard. Just stocked up batteries for our flashlights. Got candles and matches in a drawer. BBQ gas tank still has gas in it from the summer (with only the two of us here most of the time, it can take a couple seasons to go through a tank). Gas fireplace in the family room can heat that room fairly well even with the fan down as long as Enbridge is still functioning. No turkey planned at this point, though we haven't got firm plans in any case.

I remember one Christmas the power went out before the turkey was done. We lived on the mashed potatoes and squash and dessert. Power came back that night, but we were all full by then.

Looks like our Christmas plans are likely halved. Start of whatever GI plague that's hitting the schools just hit my sister's house. With only 1 of them showing symptoms now seems very unlikely they will be done before Christmas:(
We haven't had overnight guests in a long time. I'm still not super keen on it as it's just really difficult if anyone starts to feel unwell while here. With it just being my parents though hopefully that works out ok, they don't do much in terms of high risk gatherings. Lots to clear out of the spare room, it's been less guest room and more extra storage space since fall 2019. So extra cleaning plus losing a day of prep, as originally we didn't expect to see anyone until the 24th. Luckily Chemguy had the 23rd booked off already.

I wish the schools had better infection control, seems like we have missed a fair bit with my nephews.

I wish our governments would take Covid more seriously and show more courage in pushing people to act to reduce transmission. More Canadians died from Covid this year than in 2020 or 2021 and the year is not finished. They should drop all mandates related to vaccinations, promote masking, invest in improved ventilation in all public buildings, but especially schools, legislate paid sick leave for all employees, and provide current information to the public about Covid related deaths, hospitalizations, and long term effects. Omicron has changed many of the rules related to infectious diseases.

Good morning! Seems to be the year when, whether by illness or weather, Christmas plans are being altered. Hope we can roll with the punches, and go through it. One Beatitude that Jesus maybe should have added, 'Blessed are the flexible, for they are seldom bent out of shape.' Anyway, the Coffee Cart is ready to host our conversations; come on in a relax a bit.

Can governement by pious law or business force cause people to be reasonable? No! All becasue of free chooice to be irrational if you have that volition!

Thus we receive patho djinns ... characters of a peculiar essence that prefer lies over virtue due to excess pride ... that's the word is see at the moment ... words do fail us at times when one observes what folk are stunned with! Scenes of naivete ... matters that we are exposed to for the experience of a life of avarice!

Does anything in reality seem sensible? Omniscient is a factor that is beyond us looking down from out of our possibilities ... it is biblical. May resemble a myth ... story, legend, ballad or other ... thus it be got ...

Good morning from cold Vancouver Island. We woke up to -13. It is forecast to gradually warm up to 6 by the weekend with a storm watch for tonight. Thankfully we're warm and comfy here.
