As I was leaving the doc's office building this morning - a ROLLS ROYCE SUV turned into the parking lot. Good grief I did not know such a thing even existed. Starting price in Canada is about half a million bucks. Seems obscene to me to spend that much on a vehicle.

I still follow the auto scene to some degree (less than I used to) so I knew about the Rolls SUV. Most of the big European luxury and sports brands have at least one now.

The whole SUV trend is just mindblowing. I remember when it was just something outdoorsy types or people who needed something with more towing capacity than a sedan or wagon owned (I'm talking seventies and eighties, when Jeeps and the odd Chevy Blazer and original Ford Bronco were the common examples). Now it is getting hard to get an actual car in some classes. While I do like my Honda CR-V (with the current small turbo engine, it isn't much worse for mileage and emissions than a Civic sedan), I still prefer sedans when push comes to shove so I am watching this trend with dismay.

I think luxury cars are obscene to start with. I could easily afford a Mercedes or Bimmer but just can't see my way to spending that kind of money on a car that mechanically and in terms of the features I want/need isn't really any better than a $25-30K compact like the Civic or Corolla. If I'm going to splurge on a car this time, it'll be to get an EV, not more luxury. And I'm waffling even on that given that my garage doesn't have 220V so I'm limited to Level 1 charging. Might just stick with the Civic when I finally get a new second car.

After getting an SUV I don't know if I would go back. It's the height. Trucks here are pretty common - along with SUVs, and if I go to a place like Whitecourt - trying to pull out of a parking lot full of pickups or even making a right hand turn at a red light can be difficult in a car with trucks higher and further out.
For the city, the height is a lot nice for the residential streets that the city rarely plows. Plus getting on and off the driveway. Even for something like someone else's headlights, it's way better. And what I drive is pretty small, the car I drove was slightly longer.
If almost everyone else was driving cars I could switch back but would miss the SUV in the winter.

I liked the height of our Rav4 when we first got it. We switched from a small Subaru and noticed a big difference. It was nice to be almost as high as the trucks. If we replace it here I would consider a Carolla or something. Still I do like the new Ravs.

She would probably get tired
I've driven a corolla before and liked it, wasn't mine it was my Dad's but I used it sporadically. Back then I felt like more people were driving cars though too - and some of that is location as well.

It's like a mini snow miracle (big dump expected in the next 24 hours) - the Alberta government actually changed the wording on the website to be inclusive of various reasons for being immunocompromised when it comes to COVID treatments!

I think that's the one benefit I've seen with the SUV vs. my Civics. Our street is one of those tertiary, last street ploughed ones so having the height and the AWD has been a help getting into and out of the driveway at times. Otherwise, I don't find much benefit given how much more we paid for the CR-V over the Civic (both are on the same platform and both come from Honda Canada in Alliston, Ontario).

Not sure where else to put this - Certain fridges recalled in Canada because people are falling while attempting to open freezer

I feel bad for people who did injure themselves, but I'm trying to picture how it happens - and I can be a klutz at times! It's the fact that it's lower down, there's not a lot of counterweight with full it open. If it were a freezer on top I could see it more. Like to open a freezer on the bottom I am leaning forward, not back.
The article says the handle detached! A surprise like that could certainly cause a loss of balance & seems like a proper 'recall' for manufacturer defect.
When we rented a place last fall for family get-away, it had a Sub-Arctic brand fridge. OMG - the seal on that thing was SO strong - I needed one arm to pull the handle & the other brace myself on the counter to get sufficient leverage! No worries about little kids raiding that fridge!!

Just saw a post on Facebook by a friend in Calgary. The roads are so bad on the north side that the RCMP are urging people to stay home. She had a medical appointment on the north side today and she was afraid she might have to stay in a hotel overnight, though she did make it back home to the south side. Makes the snow and rain here just a little annoying.

Good morning, all! Weather seems to have improved here today, the sky may leak, but shovels will not be needed. Roads will also be in better shape. Let us continue the discussions of vehicles, weather, roads, and myriad other topics over coffee and tea and etc. The coffee cart is ready, help yourself.

My very favorite uncle is turning 91 tomorrow. I got a card off, although not soon enough, I fear. His nephew, my very favorite cuz, picked him up from hospital yesterday (he gets pneumonia easily these days), so he will be home for his birthday (yes, he still lives at home by himself, albeit with some help, from caregivers to aforesaid cuz). Happy Birthday, John Vincent! I jokingly ascribe his longevity in part to very moderate, but very regular, consumption of a dram of single malt, with which cuz and I keep him well-supplied.

Happy Birthday to Bette's Uncle! Almost makes me wish I had some single malt around....

Hmmm. And I rather like single malts myself.

* adds a note to next shopping list *

:giggle:

And a happy b-day to Uncle John!!

So the weather of the last couple days kind of reminded me that I hadn't changed my wiper blades in living memory so I dropped down to Crappy Tire on my lunch hour. Also picked up a lamb shawarma wrap for lunch. I patronize a local Osmow's (Mediterranean/Middle Eastern chain in Ontario, not sure if they've spread to other provinces yet) for my falafel and shawarma.

*sigh* A bunch of my relatives have COVID.
1 couple flew to Winnipeg to see my grandpa, also saw another elderly relative while there. 2nd couple flew out later, they all got together. 1st couple got back home, had dinner with kids/grandkids.
I'm not sure of the exact numbers of positives so far.
Timeline suggests the 1st couple got it from the flight there, no idea what their level of masking was.

Grandpa is sick but nothing serious so far.
