His voluntary helper is trying to source some more funds; the denturist has offered them completely at cost and with a payment plan. BC Health came up with something, I think. Dental health is very uneven in Canada; it, and pharmacare, need to be covered by the Canada Health Act, in the same way as they are in the UK's NHS.
The problem with losing your teeth at such a young age, relatively (he's only 36), is that with dentures, you tend to gradually lose jaw mass, which can turn into a problem 20-30 years later. Implants are way better at preserving natural jaw mass, but they are prohibitively expensive. I discovered that upon replacing a single tooth. A bridge was half covered by my insurance, an implant entailed twice as many appointments, and was twice the price of the bridge and and was only a quarter covered...
Maybe cultural? Or related to financial ability? Typical of many Quebecers in the mid-1900's from what I have heard and people I have met who attest to it. For the reason that your neighbour gave. Considered a gift to children, if not already a necessity from poor teeth.Another teeth story- talking about pulling all teeth- my 91 year old neighbour told me ( and completely baffled me with that) that when she was 20, she had all her teeth pulled to get dentures because she didn’t want to deal with the dentist. Now, I didn’t asked if she had a certain condition requiring that, the way she said that was more like- she never wanted to have to do with dentists again.

I'll pass. Chemguy took an extra long weekend. Yesterday he wanted to buy A&W breakfast. I suggested a local place instead, closes at 3 weekdays only. He bought more than I would normally get.Good morning, all! The cart is up and running, help yourself. We managed to find some doughnuts to sink our teeth into as well. Enjoy.

Reminds me of the old Crest ad, "only one cavity" and then later, "Look Ma, no cavities"?I was told that my generation is the first that is likely to have people die with their own teeth. It is in part due to people having better dental care from youth.
I remember learning how different it was for some than others, when a friend got dental care for the first time when she was eligible under her partner's care. It was life changing for her. She was always hiding her teeth, rarely smiling.
Quite sad, actually.
