Good morning. Dog and I had a more eventful walk today. We were enjoying the quiet park and the sunshine. I was carefully watching for ice on the road and dog was sniffing spots. We got to about the middle of the park and saw a fire truck. I figured it was a garden variety health issue and hoped the person whose home was there was okay. Then I saw a couple of very fit looking police officers wearing green tactical uniforms and carrying guns. Okay, so it was not a garden variety health issue. There were many officers, both in regular uniforms and in greens and many police vehicles. They seemed to be centred on a fifth wheel a couple sites up the road. I was able to get to the garbage cans where I could deposit Baela's offering. I decided to use a different route to get home. A friend called me to where she was and told me not to go the way I was headed.

So, it turned out that the friend who called me was in the site next to the incident. She was asked to leave and was at another friend's place. The guy next to her was the source of the incident. Apparently he was yelling and trashing the inside of his unit. While we were standing and talking, we heard the dog barking and a man crying out. As I headed home the police were leaving the park. My friend got the all clear shortly afterwards.

I hope all involved in the incident are okay. My guess is drugs or mental health. I doubt we'll know the details.

I need a coffee.
I suppose it is inevitable that folks in campers of various types will also have emotional problems. Once we had camping neighbours (two youngish guys) arrested and the stolen property in their trailer was recovered. Apparently they had broken into several nearby resort type stores and grabbed cash and items that would be easy to sell.

Yikes! I hope everybody’s ok too. Why did they need to wear green tactical uniforms to look military, I wonder?

That isn't unusual. There was a shooting in a park where we were 2.5 years ago. A few of those guys in green were there too.

I thought about why they need to bring this type of force to a mental health (possibly) incident. I realized they don't know what they are dealing with before they arrive. They likely got calls saying there was a guy yelling inside his fifth wheel and possibly trashing the inside. Clearly there's a possibility of violence. Has he been using drugs which make him more volatile? Does he have weapons? How big is he? Etc. They need to respond with strength. That being said, it seemed the guys in green were only there in case they were needed. Regular officers seemed to try talking first. It sounded like they ultimately used the dog to subdue the man.

It will be interesting to see if the active communications network (aka gossip mill) gives us more information. I doubt we will learn much. I wonder about the man's partner. I hope she's okay. She may have triggered this by leaving him, calling the police on him or both. I wouldn't be surprised to see the fifth wheel gone shortly.

Always the police have to act in order to protect themselves and the public when they don’t know what is going on. Currently police forces are ramping up the mental health professionals. Though our local department says that they can’t take a civilian to a weapons call

When someone's in an acute mental health crisis, with possible harm to themselves or someone else involved, I think they should send in plain-clothes officers to de-escalate. I've witnessed how intimidating it can be for some if even cops in regular uniforms show up - can really cause anxiety and panic when someone is in a really bad state, even if they haven't done anything wrong but they're scared, and all the neighbours are watching.

Our local paper has another story of a car driving down a bike path and getting stuck. Lol. I guess people think these are car paths? Don’t know why, not very wide.
At least they didn't hit anyhow. Some dope, probably drunk or high, jumped the curb and hit a Western nursing student on the sidewalk a couple weeks ago. Apparently there was a medical student who witnessed it and helped her until first responders arrived. The driver hasn't been caught and apparently none of the witnesses got his plate. The studnet has gone home to recover and apparently being on the receiving end of the healthcare system has made her more convinced of her career choice.

Our local police are a bit on the over-reactive side when it comes to mental health issues, which I have witnessed first-hand a couple of times. Frightens me, especially when angry older people are involved.

It's interesting how different people react.
When my father was in a highly charged state and combative, he did not respond to anyone......until the police officer came in uniform.
He then was willing to do what the others were getting him to do. (There was some compliance with paramedics, but, not as much as knowing it was a police officer in uniform).

We had a long council meeting, and i am feeling drained. Need to get in the care and drive home, and it is cold and dark. (I am at a house in town so that i had good internet and setup to run the meeting ....wasn't at the church).

I am thankful to be able to come to the site, and read about groceries, and birds seen, and just life in general.
Thanks for that, folks

I generally agree with this. I doubt it was so clear here today. I suspect there may have been some domestic violence. Also, any reports the police would have gotten likely involved reports that a man was yelling and trashing the trailer. That's potentially a very volatile situation where the man, police and people in the community could have been hurt. I'm frankly glad the police had the response they did today.

And who knows, something like bomb threat may have been throw out during a call. There are certainly situations with overreactions where it was specifically made as a 'wellness check', from the details you do know though it sounds like this was more than that from the get go.
