You hopefully can at least claim the $800 expense as a medical deduction on your income tax ... helps a smidge. On the plus side - yahoo - no more dragging around cylinders!!

Do people manage to do that?
Between Chemguy and I we either make too much or too little to claim.

$800 on a fixed income? She should be able to do it unless her other deductions bring her tax owing to 0 first.

You can only claim against taxes you've paid. If you've already reduced your taxable income to 0, or if you paid NO taxes at all, you're out of luck. Most pensions take some tax off, so as long as long as you're a "commercial" pensioner, vs strictly CPP, and you haven't already got enough deductions to take you to 0 taxable income (not hard), every little bit helps, right?

I do hope Crazyheart can make use of the deductino.

It's frustrating to be told one year we made too little and the next year one of us too little the other too much.
Also, as a household our taxes could certainly be reduced - the income I did make means that Chemguy pays more tax as the personal deduction limit for me that he can claim is reduced. I'm at a loss as to the lack of ability to income split. If a household making a similar income total can claim it, why shouldn't we be able to just because they way our income coming in is distributed differently? We pay more taxes because of it too.

Chemgal, you do know why "income splitting" came to be, right? So a rich man could deduct his wife making a bit of pin money to his serious tax advantage. No-one was thinking of 'legit cases', lol....

I think it's time to revisit it. The amount a couple pays if one is the main income earner vs. 2 evenly split can be quite a difference.

And as for the medical deductions - why the minimum amount and why no carry forward? There's so much stuff that doesn't even count.

So, tonight I was out with friends. We get together periodically, drink too much, and get driven home by o e of their husbands.

As I am sitting there after a very good rusty nail, my phone rings. It is the police. Instantly I start to think of my family. They ask me who I am. Am I related to ----------. It Is my dad. He has phoned 911. He is confused, cannot hear them and is freaked out. I quickly tell them he is in a long term care home on the memory or dementia floor. That shifts the conversation

Anyhow the story went on, and everyone handled it well. Needless to say the phone is now unplugged.

Not a good phone call to get, but probably much better than what you expected at first!

Hugs, and laughs, as well, Pinga. You will so much not miss the crises. Trust me. I had "falling off the stage at a local bar and breaking wrist" in my eldercare life. But you will also miss those crises.

I was explaining to the police officer that I was at a friends drinking rusty nails andhad arranged to be driven so I couldn't just jump in a car.

She laughed and said that is a wise choice.

Anyhow, I ended up confirming with staff all was well.

Sigh, staff were apologizing to me - like it was their fault?!. I just thanked them. He is safe.

It is curios to compare the different ways of loosing cognizance ... naturally or with natural consumption of mentally interactive substance ... then there's the nothing thingy ... resembling projecting emotions ... by this time its gone!

Ahhh - we sometimes have folks calling 911 from their hospital beds too! Often repeatedly ... presents an interesting challenge.

Glad the staff were able to settle your Dad's situation. Sigh. And glad you had such a positive response from police :) I wonder what percentage of 911 calls are of similar nature.

D
I'm curious, how does a 911 call go straight to the daughter instead of responding to the call?
Doesn't go straight to me.
He called, but struggled to make himself known. They called me due to other history
They were seeking more info. They called residence to confirm he was fine . Residence called me to confirm all was well.
