I love Mastermind. For all the reasons you've listed above but also because they don't separate toys by "boys" and "girls". All toys for all kids, I say!
The gender thing as frequently applied to children is getting pretty stale for me. We tried to treat our children in fair an equal ways - but still got caught on gender expectations occasionally. They basically chose their own clothes and the colours thereof (cost decided by an adult!). Toys were for general usage - no reason for girls to avoid construction toys, or boys to avoid dolls. As parents we openly acknowledged that ALL kids should experience a wide range of activities - including household skills and basic tool usage. Once they hit the school system though the more general stereotyping got to them quite quickly.
I have delighted in watching one of my grandboys making his way through the growing up process. He is confident about what he enjoys and seems immune to the inevitable teasing. In grade 4 he made himself a sweatshirt that was much admired at school. Someone asked 'Where did you get it?'
He replied 'I made it'.
"Boys don't sew".
"This one does. I've got my own sewing machine".
At various times he has coloured his hair - once in bright pink. He has also shaved it off, and grown it long enough for a single braid. He enjoys photography, loathes rough sports (he is Sports Videographer for his school teams), likes to hike, camp, read, experiment with art and cook.
The sad part about this is that his mum has been criticised for letting him, do such things - because (the lady said) you will turn him into a queer. Old ideas take so long to get overturned!
can I sit with you? Don't feel like talking. just resting with a book.
I think I must be immune to black tea's caffeine.
A ham and cheese scone thick with butter... and a cup of black tea with sugar. Because black tea can be caffeine free in the Room.
