We use the terms stag and stagette. Is that the same thing? They are usually on the same night. Guys go to one and gals to another.

No, it's more like the Manitoba socials. We don't have anything comparable here.

Stag and Doe both sexes go together. Most of the weddings that I've been a part of have gone this route instead of separate parties. It has been a long time, though, since I've been to a wedding let alone been involved in a wedding. I seem to be at an age where everyone among my family and friends who is going to get married has done so and the kids of Little M's generation still have a few years to go before they get married (if they ever do).

We use "stag" and "stagette" for two separate events. But a "Jack and Jill" is a combined stag/stagette (shower) for both the man and woman. I'm guessing a stag and doe, @Pinga, is the same?

Not sure about the one Pinga is going to. The Stag and Does in Ontario that I am familiar with are a social event that are fundraising for the wedding. I have heard of one here, and the people people throwing it as well as the bride and groom were from Ontario.
 
Why on earth would people be fundraising for a wedding Chemgal? Is this another example of a sense of entitlement (I WANT, I WANT - therefore friends, neighbors, workmates, taxpayers must make sure I get it). Really - I can't imagine even suggesting that someone else should pay, or help to pay for my wedding, honeymoon, down payment on a house or new appliances to put in it. Nor are other people responsible for ensuring that I have a holiday - a new car - or anything else other than the things we all 'get' like health care, roads to drive on etc.

It's traditional in MB and ON. These events aren't hosted by the bride and groom. I didn't make the tradition, I was just explaining what a Stag and Doe was. They are fun events, so it isn't strictly just hand over the money. From the little I know (I've only personally known 2 people to throw Stag and Does, and I've never been to either event) the MB social is more about a social event, whereas in comparison a Stag and Doe has a bit more emphasis on raising money. Buying things like 'insurance' so if your name is drawn you don't need to swallow a goldfish.
I didn't know the couple who had a Stag and Doe here, yet I was asked if I wanted to buy raffle tickets for a picture someone in the bridal party painted.

My parents were from Winnipeg, and my Mom specifically requested that she not have a social, she just wasn't comfortable with it.
 
No, I don't get it, Kay. The wedding business has convinced everyone they need these things. My wedding? One nice outfit less than $500 (dress, shoes, hat), small hall rental, minister honorarium, a few flowers, I catered the dinner myself, my brother-in-law brought some good mix tapes and a decent sound system, my godparents paid for one night in a hotel for our wedding night, then we went fishing for a week at a rented cottage in Parry Sound. I had two showers, one at work, one that a sister organized, which netted me a lot of towels and some pots and pans.
 
hmmm, Jack & Jills, or Stag & Does have been going on for as long as I can remember. This is nothing new. Shucks, they existed back when I was a young woman..and that was a while ago.
 
I don't think they are tacky-I also didn't have one.
It is a fun way to celebrate with a larger group of folks-and it is voluntary to go. W
When I played soccer on a masters team we had a "Hall Party". Same idea-rent a community hall, admission, drinks and dancing , a 50/50 draw. We did it as a fundraiser for team warm up suits.
Very similar idea to a stag and doe.
 
In our case, my buddy who was my best man threw a semi-traditional all-male stag for me. Semi- in that there were no strippers or women jumping out of cakes involved. o_O

Mrs. M. had a shower put on by my mother and I think maybe another with her colleagues and friends in Halifax where she was teaching at the time.
 
Sounds like they're particularly traditional in Manitoba, from the comments. I come from a 'tradition' of getting married by a Justice of the Peace, so my own wedding was a bit 'over the top' for my family, lol.

It's an absolutely beautiful morning here in cottage country, sun is shining with lots of bright white cloud and the trees are colourful. There's a little breeze, and the odd drift of tiny leaves falling from the locust like gold coins. It's the final gathering time in the garden, and there are still splashes of bright colour among the muted greens and browns.
 
My husband and sons are preparing for a weekend of fishing and hunting. It is a stag for my nephew. They paid $120 each which includes food and accommodation.

They are thrilled to be going. Hanging out with cousins and uncles and cousins of cousins and friends. Eating food cooked by two guys who ha started a catering business and volunteering their time. I know the family relationships will be stronger due to this time together
 
Nice day here, too, so far, but they are calling for showers. Weekend not looking so great.

Getting closer to recovering my files but what a slog.

Feel like I may be getting Little M's cold but I've felt like that for a couple days and nothing has gotten worse so maybe just allergies. Bit of a queasy stomach mid-week, too, but that's improving as well.
 
What a loooong week this has been. My Grampa is doing well following his surgery, but it showed on my face and in my energy levels how much I was worrying. I'll be thankful to catch up on sleep tomorrow!
 
Chemguy still doesn't have his truck, or at least he hasn't told me if he was able to get it today. I am exhausted. I drove him to work before my exercise class, so I had to be up about an hour earlier. We never actually discussed how he's getting home!
