So, Little M submitted a rather unique application last night. He got an early offer of admission from Carleton University in Ottawa for Computer Science. That was followed by an offer to apply for a program they have set up with Canadian tech company Shopify (they provide hosting and a set of tools for businesses to easily create and manage their online storefronts without needing a lot of technical knowledge or support). Basically, he works for Shopify while registered as a student at Carleton with the company paying tuition and a small salary (to cover living expenses). His work at Shopify includes course material though he still takes some courses on campus, too, as I understand it. And, of course, if he works out well, this could turn into his first career job. At the very least, having Shopify, who are becoming Canada's next tech darling now that Blackberry is on the ropes, on his resume can't hurt and he's someone who will benefit greatly from this kind of experiential learning. I can't say we're totally crazy about him being that far away (it's a 6-7 hour drive) but it's an improvement over his early talk about going out West.
Besides Carleton, he's entertaining offers from two other universities plus there's one he applied to that hasn't decided yet. University application time is an exciting, but rather nerve wracking, time for both students and parents.
Nice, kind of a co-op position
While it sounds like a good opportunity, it seems weird to me that there's an association with a company while applying to universities. Then I think back to what I went through when starting though and they were so slow into getting us into a program. COOP would not have been an option for first year. I had to be in the faculty of Culture and Communications first year (they had dropped General Studies a year or two before, but it was the same idea). Even in my 2nd year I couldn't actually claim my specific programs. It was a silly amount of program changes even when knowing what one wanted.
Engineering was better, those students started off as Engineering students, but they couldn't pick the specific type - they had to see if they would be accepted into the program they wanted after their first year of grades were available.
I'm glad we don't get the same types of snow storms here! Hopefully your power stays on and it can have a nice cozy feeling staying in.Major winter storm hit here just aafter midnight. It's expected to continue until tomorrow. Snow, wind - the drift on deck is probably five feet high - it's over three feet piled against the door. That's neew snow - Seelerman shovels the deck off after every storm. The side door is also blocked with 2 - 3 feet of snow, the car is practically buried.
Luckily both doors open in and could be opened in an emergency, and the front door probably doesn't have as mucch drifting. Prevailing winds keeping it somewhat clear.
Nothing moving in the city. Government offices and the universities (the major employers) are closed. I imagine the malls are too. Somehow staff will be getting to the hospital - maybe with help from the police or fire department.
Seelerman and I settling in with books, computers, jigsaw puzzle. And I'm cooking a big chicken (8 lbs) for dinner.
Fingers crossedd. So far we haven't lost power.
Seelergirl and her family are also safe and sound.
Tomorrow is predicted to be beautiful!

I think you need large-ish bodies of water to get truly hateful snowstorms. I live between two great lakes and a fair-sized one. That works. So does the Atlantic Ocean.
We only have two lakes, Erie and Huron, but get most of our weather from Huron, mostly squall lines coming down off the lake. This year has been a bust here, though. Even last winter, which we thought was a mild one, was better.
Two lakes... where?
London, Ontario. I haven't exactly been secretive about where I live. Look at a map. North is Huron. South is Erie.
No - but when you say, "We only have two lakes..." that could mean several different things. The "We..." could be We Ontarians for example. Hard to believe there's only two lakes near London too.
