We have a raccoon that has been attacking the bird feeders, so I am a bit gunshy. I don't want to encourage, yet I also know they will be around just coz there are other things in the natural world that they eat.

We had tons of raccoons in the city. Huge problem. Here in the country it doesnt seem like much of a problem. Though when I planted corn they came as soon as it was ready. I asked a farmer how he handled raccoons in his corn field. Just shoot them was the reply

so perhaps that is why they aren’t a big issue here. You do see them but limited numbers. Maybe the farmers shoot most of them. Or maybe the wolves and coyotes get them

I was supposed to pick up groceries for a friend from the US who was going to arrive in NS today to look for a future place to move to ( after quarantining). She is Canadian. Received a call- all had to be canceled. Despite having been very careful since Covid, she had tested positive on the test at the border and had to return home. She has had no symptoms. They do have a child in elementary school, so I wonder if it sweeps through schools undetected. Waiting to hear and hoping she is not getting seriously ill.

Ouch. Circle of life stuff, and why there are no bunnies in my backyard. Lucy caught and killed a bunny tonight. I did try and stop her, but I think she'd already broken its back/neck by the time I hauled her off it. Scratched hell out of my arm on the raspberry canes trying to drag her away, so there's blood everywhere. It was still alive when I got her in the house, so I settled dog and went out to check it out. Bunny had expired, so I took her away. Damn, and it was a cute thing, and probably had babies somewhere, *sigh*. You'd think bunnies would avoid the smell of canine urine/feces in a yard, yes?

Hope you get your arm cleaned up & disinfected well Bette - raspberry canes are nasty.

I'll get in line too for a Lucy visit ... something is digging under my fence despite my efforts to ban it from entry! Bunnies?

Or a skunk. Lucy likes those too, although she's never managed to catch one. Nor a squirrel. But forget "foxhound"; she's a rabbit-hound. It's not her first, although the first she's caught in the yard, because they're generally not that stupid.

I'm thankful there are no skunks here because I believe Baela would have an encounter with one. I'll have to remember that risk if we get to Ontario again......

We are fully expecting her to bring back a duck on a swimming jaunt one day. I'm hoping the fact the ducks have wings will reduce the risk of that.

Good morning! The interactions between dogs and wildlife gets more interesting by the moment. Who knew dogs were hunting animals.... oh, wait..... Anyway the coffee cart is up and running. Help yourself to the hot beverage of your choice.

That's a very interesting contrast between retriever and hound. Lucy LOVES swimming, but is completely disinterested in birds, whether they be robins on the grass in front of her, or a duck in the way of her stick. And the other tricky thing is that the birds seem to understand her total lack of threat. Where the bunnies and cats and small dogs all "get" Lucy's personality.

So far no skunk odor has been noted! Fingers crossed! Maybe I have to borrow one of those 'wildlife cameras' & see what it is ...

We had one around last year. Was out and visible in the evenings for a while in May. Cute but, yeah, thinking back we had some strong skunk smells the previous summer so wonder if they were around then and we just did not see them. Not sure what they could have been discharging at, though. The dogs are all on the court behind us. No one on our block has one.

They just have a smell.....don't have to discharge. When they discharge, then the smell is horrendous
And that's what we smelled. Ordinary skunk smell doesn't get sucked in through the AC and fill your entire house. Which doesn't normally happen, leading me to suspect the shot happened near us.

Love skunks as long as they dine terrorize my dogs. So sweet really

hope everyone is coping with spring and the changes it brings

Should you be interested in the general concept (this was new for me), I minced fresh (poultry) herbs - thyme, rosemary sage. Combined them with salt, pepper, orange zest, fresh orange juice, olive oil into a "paste". Used the rest of the orange to slice into half moons. First loosened breast skin and rubbed paste under skin, then placed orange slices between skin and flesh. Rubbed/poured the rest of the paste over top of the breast, then put some pats of butter on top. You could do this with a whole turkey, as well. The citrus/fresh herb combo provided a lot of moisture and flavour.

Sounds like something to try with breasts even on the BBQ this summer, not quite the same but still a nice flavour mix.
