*sigh* Now I'm hearing about multiple shootings at a NYE party in Calgary. Lots of violence in a short period of time in Alberta.

The Calgary shooting sounds very bizarre. A bus pulled up and shots broke out?

We have had a terrible few weeks with gang shootings here in Ottawa - very troubling and I live right in the middle of the areas that are most targetted (not great for my anxiety). Very early this morning (just after midnight) four people in their early 20s decided to go for a canoe ride in the Ottawa River behind the Supreme Court (note that it is January in Ottawa). And they went without life vests. Well, we've had a ton of rain and very mild temperatures and the current swept them up. They managed to cling to an ice flow and were rescued safely. Apparently they weren't intoxicated (I kinda wish they were - at least then they'd have an excuse). And the hospital in Kingston was on a code orange today because of a bazillion accidents on the 401 (it was closed East bound from Odessa to Brockville). So it's been a bad news day here too. (Although good news that the Air France plane that was diverted to Montreal landed safely).

My Uncle is quite sick and that makes me sad. My mental health isn't great today either so 2015 is not starting off that great.

I haven't heard that. 50 people at a party, 7 shot. A bus took about 15 people who were there for questioning, easier way to move a fair number of people.

Oh - sorry to hear about your uncle justme - I know from your posts that he means a lot to you.

Canoeing 20 year olds ... misadventure of youth. Good to hear they survived it.

Every day is a new day ... start again tomorrow.

Sorry to hear your uncle is sick. It sounds like he has people who are taking good care of him :) Don't forget to take care of yourself too!

Hard to watch a loved one struggling with their health, Justme . . . hope there are some who are able to walk alongside of you at this time and be a strength and support to you.

Unfortuntely, young people, sober or under the influence, can make some rash, pretty bad, decisions. In my youth a phrase such as . . . "there but for the grace of God, go I" . . . would have been quite applicable. I did not always make the best decisions and there were many times I put myself at risk. Young people need strong and wise role models, and help and guidance in a gracious way. Glad the youth that went for the canoe ride were all safe.

As for the awful tragedies of the lives lost because of the decisions of others to do so . . . ARGGGG! Along with everyone else - this makes me so angry! How can people have so little regard for human life? How can anyone think they can intentionally take the life of another? I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. Accidentally killing someone is bad enough, but to do so intentionally, I just don't get it.

Thinking about those boys in the canoe - thankfully they were rescued and survived. The first year of WonderCafe - three young people (two I knew - I had taught them in Sunday School) took out a canoe at night on a large lake. One made it to shore. I was asked to do the funeral for one of the others - 19 years old, brilliant young man - and a foolish decision at an end-of-the-soccer-season party.

As for the shootings - scary. I wonder what the world is coming to when so many tragedies like these are happening and violence seems to be taken for granted. When will we have Peace on Earth.

I'm rereading Borg & Crossan's book "The First Christmas". In it they compare the Roman 'peaee' to the peace that Jesus embodied. Peace through violence and control vs peace through justice. In this Christmas season perhaps we should look to the justice issues as Jesus did - feed the hungry, care for the sick, shelter the homeless, and provide hope and joy rather than despair and anger.

I dreamt about work last night, things that need doing. The pull of real life is happening from these lazy days of Christmas holiday. I wonder if that is the same for many folks Today is the last "day off" as tomorrow is just the weekend, before our lives get busy again with normally scheduled programming, whatever that may be.

We had a delightful night with my niece and her boyfriend last night. First, just gathering chatting, then, on to the very rude & crude game of "Cards Against Humanity". Oh how we laughed.

Justme, be gentle to yourself today and in the coming week. Pop in here. I hope you can spend time with your uncle, as well.

ps. it is snowing here...not much but finally looks like winter.

Those who do - please pray for one of my nieces. She was taken into hospital last night after suffering an allergic shock from something we know not what. Thank you.

Praying for Jae's niece; for my sister; for Justme and uncle.

My sister was released from hospital a few days ago and cleared to fly. Their grandsons will get her and her husband (who also isn't well but didn't require hospitalization) to the airport. They will stay at a hotel in Sudbury for at least one night, and then try to drive their car home to Elliot Lake - and then see their own doctor.

I look for the Joy of Jesus birth amid so much pain and suffering. Immanuel - God with us. May God be with each and every one of us as we face the joys and sorrows, the struggles and rewards, the light shining in the shadows of the new year.

Thank you all for your vibes - prayers - and thoughts. I just called my niece. She is back at home now. Last night her face was red and puffy and she was unable to drink anything. She was told at the hospital that she had experienced an allergic reaction to peanuts. She was given treatment - and a prescription for meds. She'll have to go to her family doctor for a round of allergy tests.

Glad to hear she's doing better Jae! I know what those reactions can be like, although luckily I've never gotten quite that bad. I've never heard of a family doctor who does allergy tests unfortunately, she'll probably have to wait for an allergist. Hopefully, due to the severity of thee reaction she can get in fairly quickly.

I hope they have a safe trip home! That's a bit of a distance when someone isn't feeling well.

Thanks ChemGal - she may have meant that she had to see her family doctor in order to be sent to an allergist.

I thought I was over my attacks. I made a mistake yesterday and pushed a bit too hard on a good day, cleaning a small section of the kitchen. I was swollen from my fingers to my shoulder. The medication worked, but now I'm back to the stupid referred ear pain. Slept bad, probably because of it and not just knowing, when Chemguy got up for work I finally was alert enough to realize the problem. No one seems to know what I should do for this.

Jae, I'm glad your niece is ok. And sending vibes for Seeler's sister and Kimmio's husband, Chemgal for the wild ride you are on and all those that are sick or hurting.

My Uncle now has care 24 hours until Sunday evening. We only hear if something goes wrong so I'm wondering how he is doing. I so want the best for him but at least I know he's in good hands. I''ll probably pop over on Sunday to see how he is - I just won't know whether I should take my Aunt or not. My Uncle has bounced back from the virus pretty fast - the one that seems to be hitting most households here in Ottawa is very harsh - people are laid up for many days (my bestie who never gets sick or when she gets a cold, barely pauses has been bed ridden since Monday evening, but sick since Sunday).

Ottawa is also in for some really weird weather - a low of -10 on Saturday and a high of +10 on Sunday along with a dumping of snow, freezing rain and then rain, then more snow and freezing temperatures to make it all very slippery and a mess.
