Our 38th wedding anniversary today.

Went to a local pub for dinner.

It feels like fall here. Cool. Wet.

Meet the teacher night. Zach has started trying a bit in school. Only a bit. That means he writes more, but still not enough. His spelling is better, but still below grade level. His art barely exists, but he doesn't outright refuse to draw or paint. He's automatic in math, to a scary degree.

The mom and daughter meeting the math teacher ahead of us were difficult to watch. The girl seemed inconsolable. I assume she's struggling in the subject. They talked a long time.

When we did get a chance, we were all smiles. Zach is getting perfect test scores, finishing homework sheets in class, and nailing extra hard questions that stump the rest of the class.

The teacher's advice? "He's never going to be a poet." I laughed my ass off.

But it was suggested he could tutor his classmates in math. Which is funny, because he's always had an Educational Assistant until this year.

He didn't know what that meant. We couldn't explain the concept of asking fellow students what confuses them or walking them through the steps. I half wonder if he doesn't even do "steps". I fear his brain just comes up with the answer. He may be useless as a tutor. But it may also teach him to break the math down into steps.

Having Zach be a leader of sorts in class is new territory. The girls are probably furious. Or they would be, if he wasn't likeable. Apparently the girls think he's great, because he doesn't put up with boys teasing them. Having an older sister teach you how to treat girls makes a difference.

He's also apparently a pretty funny guy in class. Didn't see that coming.

He probably doesn't experience steps. If he can learn that others do and he can understand and learn to help them , would be great.
