Ice storms are always devastating.
I'll take a blizzard over ice any day. The only worse weather I can think of that can happen in Ontario are twisters and those are rare and usually fairly localized compared to this. The derecho that went through a few years ago could be another contender, I guess, but those are also comparatively rare.

That said, one of the regulars on my writing sites lives in Florida and had her condo complex trashed by the hurricanes last year. They only just got some of their facilities back in operation. So I'll still take almost anything we can get over that.

Internet came right back on here at the big guy's, but even cell service was a bit uneven Sunday in particular.

Glad to hear that you made it through the storm....I was hoping you and the big guy were together....these things are better with someone we love if possible ....IMO.

Will take a blizzard over a mcflurry any day

We didn't get hit by the ice that you had @BetteTheRed but just enough to cancel a few things and make the rest of us grumpy (especially the postal worker I talked to today!!!) They are calling for more freezing rain tomorrow. So...more crankiness.

Yeah, and I have a member of my team up North right now, too. Told to take it easy and keep an eye on the weather when we talked this afternoon. No ice forecast down there, just lots and lots and lots of rain. Lovely. My ark is behind schedule, too. Anyone know where to get two tuataras?

One of the locals who I am getting to know
Saved by Dolphins
Now is an incandescent light of hope and joy
Here she is with her groceries ready to go home
She recently got rid of her car
And only has a landline

Wow. Now that's what I call scenery. I really need more mountains around.
Any time you and yours need a break from the hububb there, let me know

Best time is Summer. LOTS of places both in.and out of town to camp...a lot of people even camp in town in and on their vehicles or on people's property -- we are pretty friendly here...tho of course there is diversity here and some more like their privacy

We have a few B & Bs, at least 1 Motel and a Hotel (where heliskiing was invented)

We even have a Pharmacy, a gym, two hardware stores, a used bookstore that is also a Rudolph Steiner centre, three grocery stores (one vegetarian, one a chain...), a credit union, a print shop, 4 churches in town, an outfitter store, 6 places to get coffee, a mining museum and baker and maker of the platonic ideal of a brekky sammy, a deli, our Thrift Store, two gas stations, a hospital (5 days a week, 9 to 5), gov't liquor store, Angry Hen bar, Buddy's pizza joint (Fridays live jazz and blues), the Cork and Fork restaurant and endless small festivals and art music a Youth Centre and a Cultural Centre built on our old Japanese Internment building, an upscsle botique coffee shoppe (think saffron donuts and charcoal bun pork buns) an independent coffee shop and vsrious pop ups and a Sat Market in the winter and in the on season oh and our only fast food the Dog House which sells nummy hot dogs :3

Whew.

Prices are on the more expensive side for food here but it is mostly EXCELLENT organic fresh stuff and you can practically get eggs everywhere

Fishing and hunting

We even have lots of fruit trees and a few wild hazelnuts

And of.course for the forager numerous mushroom and berries and herbs and such

Lots of lively convos on pretty much any.pov too

Oh and me *rainbow*

Good morning! Happy mid-week! Recovering from ice storms, hydro and internet services coming back to places, ice storms vs. blizzards, tree branches down, starting to be gathered up, mountains and scenery, and all the stuff that comes up today; we bring it to the Coffee Cart with us. We chat, we support, we drink tea and coffee, and indulge in bearclaws. Coffee is, as always, fresh brewed, tea water is boiling, baked goodies warm from the bakery. All is ready, everybody welcome. Come in when you can and join the conversations!

Internet interruptions were ringing about the world ... like other idi ode-like derivations of dead-eye's ... those that see very little but do a lot of dashing and running about ... looking for shiners they cannot observe from their positions! Bobble necks ... nex us ... prepare for the squawk ... another wheel gone bad ...

Alas I'm not certified to say that so I say "alternate" ... and there it is laid out ... latent for the boids ... buoys? Floaters everywhere ... cat a racked ... these falls fume ...

Waterous pumps ...

Good morning everyone,
After attending a paint night with a friend, I fell sick on Friday and have been laying low ever since. No Covid though. Coming weekend I am signed up at a fancy resort for a Fibre Art retreat- first time attending. I hope I can make it- right now, my coughing spells are limited to at night- and I have a single room…will keep a bit away from the group at meal times and keep a mask handy. My energy is coming back and I think I am at the end of being contagious, thankfully. There would not have been any refund and a loss of almost $600…
I know, after Covid, anybody with any signs of a cold makes people uncomfortable.

A friend from Germany contacted me and wants to come in August. She’d stay in NS for a week but also wants to see Niagara Falls. She hasn’t booked anything yet. I am worried she is a bit late- after all, all those Canadians that are now vacationing in Canada instead of the US will be going somewhere. ( on the other side, there are likely less Americans coming as well- because they are worried about re-entry into the US. ) Used to Europe, she was thinking of traveling by train or by bus- not sure if this is really an alternative to the car here. And I think that Greyhound is no longer, is it? Any suggestions where to stay and how to get there would be appreciated.

Oh boy Bette you had lots of challenges to fight with the ice storm. Good to hear that you stayed safe through it all. Hope the clean up isn't too challenging- poor tree!

From NS to Ontario without a car? Try Via, I guess. Train to Toronto, then there is probably some kind of bus service to Niagara Falls. I think Burlington is the closest the train gets to the Falls and that station used to be out in the boonies when I lived in that area (Hamilton). Yeah, Greyhound is gone. Here in Ontario, there's a patchwork of bus services now.

When Mrs. M taught at Dal, I actually used to fly down a lot of the time. Not cheap but we often only had a week or so together so didn't want to waste time with the train or, worse, driving (took me 3 days the one time I did drive from Halifax to Hamilton). But that's probably still an option.

All that said, that goes back to the early nineties (she was in Halifax 91- end of 93). Hopefully someone has more current information.

Welp, I've made it April and dodged all the viral bullets that have come my way so far. Something just went through the family of one of my team (three kids and wife is a hospital nurse so lots of disease vectors in that household) but he has not shared the wealth at work so far.

I'm having a quiet morning after a fairly busy day yesterday. Tomorrow will be busy too. Yesterday was coffee with my cancer buddies. Sadly, one died on the weekend after living for over four years with stage 4 ovarian cancer. That's a long time since ovarian cancer often gets diagnosed late. It has symptoms that doctors often dismiss as bowel or digestive issues. It annoys me that some will only look at one option how hard would it be to do a CT or whatever that will check more than one thing? Doctors have to know these symptoms could be more than one thing and that ovarian cancer is deadly. Geez.

I had my scans on Monday and will see the oncologist tomorrow. I'm hoping this new drug has done it's thing and that the scans showed good results. I get bloodwork in the morning, then head to the city where we'll have lunch with a northern friend who now lives in the city. I'm knitting her a f*** cancer hat since she has had her own cancer garbage and needs such a hat. She has suggested a restaurant on the harbour that looks great.
