We did not make to midnight but, yeah, that's what we did after 22 Minutes was over. Sydney, London, Dubai, Taipei, Shanghai (another interesting drone show), Singapore. I think that's the ones we saw. Interesting how both Dubai and Taipei make use of their megastructures (Burj Khalifa and Taipei 101 respectively) in their shows. The Burj has residences in it, though, so not sure how that plays out.

I am becoming quite fond of the drone shows, really. I mean, fireworks are bright and noisy but a well-programmed drone show is a whole new level of entertainment. The Shanghai New Year's show had the drones form a fairly good image of Chinese legendary figure Sun Wukong (aka Monkey King) at one point, and at another an ancient Chinese soldier waving his arm.
We watched all of those too....amazing how those drones are lined up just right, an art in itself!

@JayneWonders your holiday plans sound exhausting but super fun. Hope all goes well. Our days are very quiet around here. I just undecorated. We went out for Chinese food yesterday. Then we went to our son's for breakfast this morning. My sister and I spent time with Mom at the nursing home last night, playing UNO. We actually had quite a good time (lots of laughs and banter). Now, is that sad to say that I enjoyed New Year's Eve at the nursing home? But I did.

I now have 16 athletes with me and two young coaches. It has been an experience. They are an interesting mix. There's a lot of talent in there, but a lot of technical aspects to fix as well. One girl is a challenging sort who was grilling me on my experience and qualifications to coach because she didn't like my sense of humour (I said I had a license to beat children and I made it in photoshop and even laminated it). They really thought I was old and slow and the 17-year-old coaches were way more qualified and faster than me.

In fact, when I finish my course over the next two days, assuming I pass, I will be qualified to coach U16 and the young coaches are not. As for raw speed, I asked the athletes who among the coaches and athletes on the team they thought was fastest in last year's club champs. They were sure it was one of the young coaches. It was not. Not even close. Like 3+ seconds on a 40 second course not close.

So, now they respect me a bit more. And they listen when I speak.

I can't blame them. The club has hired some terrible coaches to help in the past who can barely ski. I'm not one of those.

They don't know why I'm coaching them. They don't know about Carter at all. They don't know they share a birth year with him. Not sure I'll ever tell them.

I like U16, but I actually prefer U10. I could see coaching U10 next year if that team is available. My sense of humour flies better with 9-year-olds. They aren't so self-conscious.

But for now, I have a course to finish up, some evaluators to impress, and hopefully I walk away with a pass.

You get to enjoy what comes to you that is enjoyable! Glad you got surprised by joy at the nursing home.

I have great memories of my Sunday afternoon tea dates with my Mom. We might just have a visit, we might have a project, like birthday cards or Christmas cards, but we always had our perfect cuppa. Nursing homes cannot make tea. So, I would, at home, pour cold fresh water into the kettle, put it on to boil, get out the 4-cup brown betty, prewarm the leaves (always Tetley's), pour the freshly boiled water, let steep about 5-6 minutes, then pour into my stainless steel superwarm thermos. It went in a bag with a container of 2% milk, 2 wedges of lemon, and two porcelain tea cups. If there any baking around, a biscuit or tart or two went in as well. I miss those afternoons, although I have some regretful memories of "for Pete's sake, Mom, if you can't remember who the person is we're sending this card to, could we not?"

I played a lot of cards with my grandparents. Not so much my parents. I sorta miss that.

I miss times with parents and grandparents.

We had a nice dinner with my sister and her husband at one of the fancier local restaurants. It was a great way to start the year.

Good morning! New Year celebrations and family meals, birthday parties and movies, playing cards with parents in care homes, all the ways we mark a new beginning, plus whatever else arises, it comes with us to the Coffee Cart for discussion and chat. Let us gather in spirit in the place, for conversation and support, for coffee and tea and hot chocolate, for cinnamon buns, and leftover fruit cake, to chat and support and care about each other. All is ready, all are welcome. Come in and join the fun!

Good morning. I think today will involve digesting the wonderful meal I had last night. The restaurant is a lovely spot and serves great food. The visit was also nice. My infusion in the afternoon went well. It was nice to be there when the hospital parking lot was half empty. Usually you have to plan for several trips around the parking lots looking for a spot.

I received a call from the cancer centre today. The woman was making sure I knew about my CT appointment in a couple weeks. I thanked her for that and said I did know about it because it's in my patient portal. I told her it had been very frustrating to get it set up. I also told her I appreciated that she had checked in. I wrote a note to the patient care quality office on Monday and talked to a man from there on Tuesday. The man told me I wasn't the only one who had complained. I suspect the woman I talked to today knew about my complaint. Well, as long as things improve.

Gotta say that I'm disappointed that not once in this holiday season were cookies available on the cart. The celebration of Christmas in my family always included the enjoyment of many kinds of cookies. My mother was simply an amazing baker. Two of my favorites that she always made were her candy cane cookies, and mostly her absolutely, perfectly delicious shortbread cookies.

Sounds like you missed the opportunity to share. Pretty much everybody can bake virtual cookies….

Good morning! First weekend of the New Year is upon us, stay safe! For those who are unhappy about the snack table, you may feel free to bring your own, for yourself and to share. For follow up phone calls concerning medical appointments, for the steady supply of cookies that some may not have noticed, for all the topics that will pop up today, we gather round the Coffee Cart, for conversation, support, and to drink coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and indulge in danishes and other goodies. All are welcome, all is ready. Come in when you can and join the fun!

An old recipe….but here are some icebox cookies.
Oh those are good! Thanks for bringing them.

My mom didn't bake a lot of cookies but she made great pies. And a good Christmas fruit cake. She also made "war cake" aka Depression cake.
