Relearning old skills: Sewing

This weekend's project is to cut out a variety of sizes of 11 beach bags / pyjama bags. Various fabrics that i picked up or had in hand.

They will then be filled with pjs or nighties for the same 11 children.

Christmas sewing.

ok, so, the project is well on its way.

T-shirts arrived when my sisters arrived, with big fun designs -- Cousin 1 all the way through cousin 12.
The 8 girls lounge pants are done, other than then their labels.
The 2 boys who are still under 16 are well under way
2 of the 10 beach bag are done.

Plan to sew every day until Monday, then hope I am done.

If I have time after doing the kids, will do the little microwave bowls. -- have picked the fabric.
Will put some homemade jams / jellies with them

I don't honestly know what more I will get done before Christmas. I don't know about baking, I'll have to do some shopping...have acquired a gift for the big guy and for my daughter. A few stocking stuffers acquired, more needed, plus books. I'll work on my son's gift after Christmas.

I got an indoor baby swing, beautiful, almost like new except that two straps were ripped, through the “buy nothing Canada” facebook community. The owner got it as a second hand gift but can’t sew- so she would have thrown it out. She bought a brand new one instead. Took me less than 30 minutes to replace the straps- now Oma has a swing for baby sitting…I also sewed a head support that was missing- one for me and one for the giver.

Not too much of too much. I've backed away a lot at church (I do reading and slides a lot, but didn't take on the labyrinth and plan to quit the Board next year), and I only work 3 shifts a week. The big guy has made me more aware of how spun out I can make myself, and that it's better to pace myself than pay for it.

And last year, he came up with the best idea ever. Cook a big turkey and start sides a couple of days before Christmas. Then, you do Xmas with all of your friends and fam over a few days, warming up, plating and adding stuff as occasion demands.

Didn't get the bowls done, but rest was done

I went to a sewing class yesterday to make an apron.
Have a great pattern, and like my new apron made from my stash.
It's reversable.

Haven't sewn for a while, so was time to get busy.

Sewed two nighties each for the granddaughters.

Why is it that each time I go to do a buttonhole, my heart goes in my throat, though, the machine does it beautifully. Must be the anxiety from high school home ec class still kicking in.

The one nighties has lined yoke, collar, button -- so lots of pieces, but, gosh it is a cute nightie.
The other is a kwik sew pattern with elastic neck which comes together quickly.

Hopefully they work for the summer for the girls.

Oh, I forgot about this thread. Maybe someone can answer my question:
junior bought them a camper, but the cushions were old and smelly, so I got the job to make new ones. They needed to be 4” thick- but to save some money I bought a 2” thick foam piece and thought I could just take it double. However, now I am thinking- how do I keep those two pieces together? First I thought of pulling thread through and have buttons on both sides- but then- its also a mattress to sleep on- so possible, those buttons could be noticed like the princes on the pea….
Can foam be glued together? Sew just a really tight fitting cover and hope it doesn’t shift in it?

Hah - turned out the oldest birthday party for friends is today, and it is a spa day.
Girls were told to wear PJ's for the party, so now our girls have new nighties to wear.

If the two pieces of foam are cut into pieces the same size and stacked, they should be okay inside the cover. I guess that depends on the cover too.

I would think the cover would have to be really tight for them not to shift.
I'd probably go back for a larger piece of foam myself.

So here is the solution- they now have planned to get an crib mattress, which fits exactly the size when it’s turned into a bed. So I can now do as I had planned originally- with the buttons ( those flat ones for duvet covers. They won’t hurt when sitting on….

I have a friend who used to re-upholster and refurbish boat cushions and furniture. She said you could use the two 2" pieces. She said to cut them both bigger than needed. So if you need 15" square, cut it 16" square so it fits snuggly.
