Pride month is June and it is here. With the pandemic still raging, though fading, most festivities are going to be virtual or smaller in scale again this year. That does not mean they are not happening though. There is lots to celebrate but also a lot to discuss and think about for the LGBTQ2S community (probably missed some letters there).

What's up in your neck of the woods? What are communities doing? What are churches doing?

Several local organizations in London have raised the rainbow flag for June, including the local police. There some controversy over that as BLM would prefer the police not be part of Pride, while Pride and the London Police Service have made some great strides in relations between police and the LGBTQ2S community and Pride wants them included to celebrate that.

As usual, the actual Pride London festival isn't until mid-July. It's virtual again this year, hopefully for the last time.
 
Our county provided free Pride signs for your yard, just ask.
I missed the request date, then heard there were more to be made available. Signed up last night, and picked one up today.
Very nice.
 
Wrong month, but marking of the 40 anniversary of the Pisces Spa raid. Police shared video and issued a statement for the hurt caused.
 
I saw some stuff on TV about Pride Toronto's celebration this year which included footage of past parades etc & it reminded me of @PilgrimsProgress visit to Toronto some years ago :-) She stayed near the gay village (coincidence right?) at Pride time and as I recall had lots of eye popping fun!

It was a long time ago -and I was gobsmacked. At that time there was no such thing as gay marriage in Oz. (I remember looking the other way when I saw two elderly men holding hands in public!)

I did some work at a secluded Geriatric Psychiatric Hospital some years ago ... while evacuating the patients from building to building as the work proceeded .. we noted the elderly patients walked along hand in hand like kinder*gardeners ... someone said you learned all you needed to know there ... and adults caused corruption and adultery! Kids squabble but cause lessor wars ...

I'm guessing all the roofer ones are too large too!
There's a size limit to the photos, you can make a copy at a lower resolution to reduce the file size.
 
My home town (1,200) had its first Pride Flag raising.

From the mayor:
"Before we start today, I'd like all of us to take a moment to acknowledge and remember the children of the Kamloop Residential School.
Good Afternoon, it's nice to see the support of the raising of the Pride Flag and realizing and understanding Pride month.

It has taken over 50 years to get where we are today, working towards equal rights and acceptance.
These efforts of acceptance and inclusiveness go far beyond the boundaries of the Town of Thessalon. Even though there has been large strides taken, we, as individuals must continue to support equality and be a part of the solution. " -Mayor Bill Rosenberg

From Harry Stewart: Growing up in Thessalon I never thought I would ever see the day we would have a PRIDE flag in Thessalon recognizing Two-Spirited, Lesbian, Gay, Trans, Queer, Plus people who live in Thessalon.

Things are changing. My husband, Chris and I were married in Thessalon almost 16 years ago. Today we are here for another Thessalon milestone - the Town Of Thessalon’s 1st Pride Flag event.

Chris and I are not the only people living under the Rainbow in the Thessalon area. Currently, we are probably the most visible. We all want to live in a place where we are respected and treated equally. By flying the Pride flag the town is acknowledging the local Rainbow Community.

The PRIDE flag also lets others know that the town of Thessalon welcomes diversity, acceptance and inclusiveness. Not many small towns in Northern Ontario can say that.

While COVID may keep our celebration options limited, we look forward to 2022 when we can have events to celebrate the diversity of Thessalon.
Chris, myself, and the Rainbow Community, applaud the Thessalon Town Council for their wisdom and foresight in moving forward in becoming a town for all people.

Excellent, @Jobam. Thanks for your account of this event and glad you and Chris could be a part of it. It has been less than 30 years since a London mayor refused to proclaim Pride (mercifully, she is long gone) so even cities still have to fight battles over this at times. I can't even imagine how tough it must be in rural areas, which tend to be more conservative that urban areas. Victories like this are good news from that standpoint.

And how the heck did a small town in Northern Ontario end up with a Greek name?? I mean, I assume Thessalon is related to Thessaly In Greece.
