Picket Line

Picket lines aren't all union based, and they aren't all done by workers.

Part of it was. It wasn't until the 2nd question where a union was brought up.

Actually, I have never heard the term "crossing the picket line" used outside the context of a strike. It could be a non-union shop striking but that is very rare anymore. Any shop that is likely to take job action tends to be unionized, at least in my neck of the woods.

Students strike. At post-secondary level they are unionized but in high school they are not.

I once participated in a strike/protest demonstrating for the equal rights of left-handed people. This is true. The organizer of the march conveniently had it end at his own "Left-Handed Shop" in downtown Toronto.

Face it ... humans in their urge to control everything are not inclined to compromise on anything ... aggression is the roués ...

It is unnatural ... as even rhubarb compromises with strawberries ... not like police states of mind and dark arias ...

We had one when I was in high school, but we didn't actually picket per se. We marched on the then board offices. Well, those who went. It was over the transfer of a popular principle and I didn't really see the point.

There was a walk-out that we had related to public transit.
There was also an actual strike with students picketing outside at one point. I can't even recall what the issue was, it wasn't something I agreed with at the time and there wasn't a great deal of support for it.

Some things are also blurry. I don't know of all of the details, but I do know of the strikes at ON universities in the last few years. Graduate students were involved. While TA duties are working, it gets murky as the student's unions are about being students, not workers, although there are collective agreements or at least that's how it worked here.

TAs are now unionized at a number of universities. York has had at least one strike by them that I recall. Not sure what union is organizing them or if they have their own similar to how faculty associations have been certified at some universities.

At Western the faculty association is certified but not sure about TAs.

I recall anguished conversations during my childhood when strike action was being contemplated where my dad worked. Also remember going without an adequate diet during the strike action that followed. Strangely I didn't notice that the increase in pay improved things much around the house.

Would I cross a picket line? Not if there was an ethical way to avoid it.

Are strikes useful? This one seemed to be -

What's outside the point?

Tesla would have said discharged ... a restive shock!

Not for those addicted to the work ethic ... and know nothing ... else ... causes blanc expressions ... no writ ... nor IT!

@BetteTheRed, I worked in an office building where

there were optometrists and labs(where I worked). In the

office building were also Government offices who were on strike.

I had to cross to get to work.

I wouldn't consider that to be 'crossing the line' since they were picketing the government offices, not those you needed to access. I trust that theey let people through to those services.
