Is anyone in ON understanding how they determined Omicron cases are making up 21% of the new cases there? When looking at what data is out there, it seems like under 200 Omicron cases total (sequenced).
Is it an estimate of Omicron via tracing? A random sample of covid cases sequenced on one day?
The number just seems to be thrown out there without any connecting dots.
I get the same feeling as the "not as severe of illness" statement from South Africa. No mention of actual hospitalization rates in a numeric sense.
Not questioning validity (not yet anyway) but I find the reporting to be a little odd. Almost like reading a headline only despite reading full articles.

Not all CBC shows can be replayed. For some, the only way to "hear something again" is in the window afforded by time zone changes. I often listen to a couple of hours of Tom Allen twice in preference to Rich Terfry.
I'm a bit surprised with a hot topic they don't throw a little summary up, I do see it for some episodes but it's very sporadic.

The free rapid test they will offer here is interesting. 1kit per person can be picked up every 14 days. Each kit contains 5 tests. It states to do them 72 hours apart, doing 2 per week for 2 weeks. 5th is in case of any issues.
Wonder what availability will be like, it starts on the 17th.

Ontario had a big jump in cases, period. As did my area. And apparently the promised free rapid tests are only being distributed in the GTA right now.

Available here and have been for several weeks.
We had them available, but not free to the public in general. Today was the first for that. Rapid tests have been around for months here. There are still paid ones available in pharmacy - a pharmacist has to sign off for the REP. So if people want to go to a restaurant unvaccinated they still have that option.

Aaaaand here we go again....

Summary of new Ontario gathering limits:
  • Social gatherings cut to 10 indoors and 25 outdoors (from 25 and 100). Weddings, funerals, church services exempted at this point.
  • Most retailers and service businesses like restaurants, bars, gyms, etc. cut to 50% capacity
  • Limit of 10 per table in restaurants (seriously? That's not much of a limit), no booze after 10pm
  • Dancing not allowed save for "workers performing" (strips clubs, for instance, are allowed to open with the 50% capacity limit)
That's on top of reducing entertainment/sports venues with a rated capacity over 1000 to 50% capacity a few days ago.

Going to affect my daughter's income, again, *sigh* Better get some grocery gift cards for the Christmas bag.

Not enough IMO, I'm sure it will change again soon, after the damage is done.
I just wished they would just really crack down so we can get done with it!

At least they took a step. They relaxed things here earlier in the week. I appreciate removing the 2 household rule (it was limited to 10 adults either way). I don't understand why the eased on those unvaccinated though. They could at least require recent negative tests for unvaccinated for private gatherings.
I think we need to put more limits on the non private gatherings here. Things like hockey games. Even if they just requested people use the rapid tests, it would probably cut down on transmission.

True, but by new years we will be up to 10,000 from modeling, so why go slow? Other than to prepare peoples minds once again.
Personally, " Hit Me With Your Best Shot".

I like the small, early steps as that seems to work well. Not sure if ON is past that point. Politically reaction rather than proaction seems to be how things run in general though.

I also think contact tracing needs to be ramped up. If they want people working etc. Double up with PCR and rapid test. Negative rapid? Free to be until the PCR test comes through. Positive rapid, need to isolate.

NS got 394 new infection today, close to 300 yesterday- we are at the limit of contract tracing, people are asked to let everybody know themselves. They also had a backlog of calling people with their positive result.
It seems to be all going back to a super spreader event at St FX university x ring celebration- lots of people from all corners of NS attended.

I'm afraid rapid testing is going to be on an honour system of self reporting.
