Novel Coronavirus

It's funny though I think AB has the strictest private gatherings. Indoors ALL adults (12+)? need to be vaccinated if more than 2 households are gathering. For vaccinated groups I think we're still at only 2 households, max 10 adults. Single people can have 2 people from different households, I'm not certain if that means only 3 adults can be present though. I'm not going to a ton of parties Chemguy had a game night planned with friends, so they were going to the single guy's house as that's allowed. All 3 households are cautious, it ended up just being 2 as a kid was sick so the 3rd guy stayed home, legally not required since he's not sick.

So the Thanksgiving gathering with an unvaccinated adult who took a test? Not allowed here. If they all go to a restaurant for a large gathering and test, that's ok.

Ugh lost my post.

2 cases of Omicron in Canada from Nigeria, not a travel ban country. Other countries are reporting cases too.
I think discouraging/banning non essential travel worldwide would be more effective that bans on a few countries. It would also reduce effort on good testing for international travel. I would also like to see international travel separated from domestic travel when it comes to planes, buses etc. At minimum have international travelers do a rapid test hours before getting on a domestic flight/bus/whatever.

Actually, I am hopeful that Omicron is more of a solution than a problem. Reports say it is more contagious, but on the other side, in South Afrika, people were getting less sick and not needing hospitals. Of course, SA’s population is young compared to western. But my hope is that Omicron is making us actually less serious sick but pushes out all the other variants, contributing to putting an end to this.

That's possibly a "good hope" , but right now we just don't know.

Canada now has at least 6 cases of Omicron. How many were from the Southern African countries in the travel ban? I haven't heard of any so far, but I only know were 3 of the travelers came from.

The first two in Ontario came from Nigeria which is nowhere near the initial list of banned countries. I expect these travel bans will be ineffective. It is probably too widespread for anything more than a return to a total ban on travel to be effective. Requiring testing, vaccine passports, and quarantine rules will do more good than travel restrictions, I suspect.

I don't really like it, but I agree.

I'm betting the WHO knew about the OMICRON variant,....loooong before we were told.
Same as it was known Covid was airborne when we were told droplets.
I'm thinking with all the "horror" hype about this one, they will be releasing what they already know in small increments to soften the blow.

I'm not sure how long they really knew about it. Places need to do genetic sequencing to get that information. Some of the known variant testing is different than sequencing. I would say sure, a few days lead before things were made public as there are preliminary results that need to be confirmed.

If it was circulating for a while I think the positive hits here would already be higher. We don't sequence all positives, but it is something that is done.

Up to 7 now, all with a Nigeria connection for the ones where travel info is shared.
Does anyone know if Nigeria travel is just more common in Canada? I'm not familiar with which countries we are more closely tied with.

I know quite a few Nigerians, actually. It is a former British colony so most of the population speaks English and many have a decent education, making it easier and more likely for them to immigrate. So I think a lot of the travel is the immigrants and their families going back and forth. Not sure why, but there's a lot of them in tech jobs. There's a Nigerian guy at another company working with me on a project these days.

Was wondering why so many seemed to be from Nigeria, so sounds like it may just be nit s lot from the other countries who came back shortly before the restriction was in place.
I haven't met a lot of people with ties to Africa, one grad student and I can't recall the country. There seems to be a pretty big population of Somalians in the city.

Germany has a case of a person who didn’t travel and didn’t have any contact with anybody who traveled. This might have been around for a while.
I agree. I don't think it's been the sort of thing that has widely been circulating to be picked up on genetic sequencing that is being done and WHO covered it up for a while though. If this had started in a place like the UK, Canada, etc. yes I do think we would have known about it earlier.

When there's exponential growth , by the time sequencing (which isn't as fast as just a positive test results) spread can occur fast.

Imagine ... a kind of abstract within that allows internal changes ... unbeknownst to mortals ... all in the land of the infinite below real observational conditions ... once known as OBI's ...

There may be many myths about this unbelievable flight of thought ...

I am disappointed, but not surprised, that South Africa is being punished for doing such a good job of testing the genetics of Covid cases and reporting it. It seems likely Omicron started in Central West Africa from the reporting being done and that it is likely widely spread already.

So here the numbers from NS after the deadline of mandatory vaccinations was Nov 30. Doesn’t sound terrible, but I don’t believe it doesn’t have any effect on an already stressed system like long term care.

Anybody knows what is going on in Quebec? Weren’t they the first one to introduce mandatory vaccinations?
I thought they backed off, although I could be wrong.
