And unvaccinated, when my church neighbour down in Florida has had both shots.
People outside the state of Florida are also welcome to relish their time to do business or simply just have a good time with less to no restrictions on their movements. Florida has had no statewide restrictions for months, and nearly all children were back in school in September. What’s more, Florida has become the top destination both for people permanently moving and also vacationing during the great winter spread of the virus. According to those who preach that human input is what determines the trajectory of the virus, Florida, especially with its senior population, should have been toward the bottom, with much higher all-cause mortality. Was it?

Florida. 21 million people. 31,000 deaths. Not a good record. Canada 35 million people. 22,000 deaths. Also not a good record but better than florida. Ontario 14 million people 7000 deaths.

they are being vaccinated though it’s not smooth, like elsewhere

the governor is full of bravado but there are lots of restrictions despite what he says. Our friends say that while restaurants are busy, it is at half capacity and mostly outdoor. Tons of restaurants are mostly outdoor so easy to do, we always choose to eat outdoor in Florida. They also say that downtown everyone mostly wears a mask on the street. Individual stores have individual rules but most ask for masks and limit customers

our boat club has very strict rules about getting onto the boat, how many people can be on the dock at a time, mandatory masks on the dock..... seating capacity for all boats has been cut in half ( we belong to a club where you book a boat for the day)

our golf club has mandatory masks inside Unless actually sitting and eating. Restaurant at half capacity, even outside. Masks must be worn when getting carts and starting to play. Then you can do what you want. Staff doesn’t empty cart of your clubs or your garbage, you must take clubs to your car. guest events have been cancelled for the season though regular member events are going on, at decreased numbers

it is less restricted than Ontario has been since Christmas but still restricted. The golf course rules sound pretty much like what our golf course rules were here this summer and what the ski club rules are right now

I think the three variants that are floating around worry the people in charge with how infectious they are. But the USA is vaccinating 2 million a day now, expected to be three million shortly so hopefully they get it under control

when I hear Texas ceasing all rules while infections are not under control I wonder if it is the governor just trying to change the subject after the ice strike disaster

Germany now has 50% of variant cases up from 20% just one week ago. They had been in strict lockdown since after Christmas and initially the cases went down significantly, but with the increase in variants it didn’t decrease as expected. They are now opening up slowly, because of the political pressure, despite experts saying they should keep on for two more weeks.
whoever was a fan of the Swedish model- they also have been locking down this year, because the voluntary didn’t work.

I was replying about Florida because Rita commented that they have no restrictions. They do, just not from the governor

according to our friends Florida is operating as Ontario did during the summer. Cautious but open

of course Florida is also full of trumpers who still Think it’s all a hoax

i don’t mind most of the rules. Masks, keeping distant, waiting your turn, line up..... those are fine. I do miss not having seen my kids in person since thanksgiving Though, they live close to each other so they do walks together with dogs

Yeah, Texas and Mississippi have lifted state-level restrictions this week but I assume local governments and health authorities still have some authority in the area, just as health units in Ontario can go beyond the provincial rules using health orders.

Yes. I agree. I find here in my lovely little town, people are pretty happy to comply and keep safe. I think in Florida there is still a big faction that are difficult. I think part of it is Americans not wanting to be told what to do. You would think the massive number of deaths would cause them to rethink that but it doesn’t seem to. It is partly because depending on what news you listen to, you get wildly different reports. That is very sad

We probably need a separate thread for dealing with the US (and to some degree here, too) cult of the individual. Sometimes we really do need to behave as if we were part of a community/species no matter how much we may want to be seen as individuals.

I am acting as a part of a community/species being firmly convicted that the harm is outweighing the good ... the children are being psychologically damaged and I as an individual want it to stop.

So this is now the canadian WC2 cult of the collective thread then. No dissent from the cultivated consensus allowed.

That was not directed at you, just me explaining that there is a whole separate broader issue here that I want to deal with apart from COVID.

And since when have we not allowed dissent? The fact that you haven't been banned as you could be on other boards suggests we are very tolerant of dissenting views. We would prefer them to be expressed respectfully, which is where you fall down a lot, but have certainly not stopped them from being expressed.

This is reported as good news, but it's still a fairly high rate. And the sexism bias is really high.

NS lifted the regulation not to leave Halifax as of this morning. Earlier than expected, because they had a record number of tests done and did not find too many cases.
My coworker went skiing last night, ski hill is 30 minutes from Halifax, so usually a busy place. But- people were adhering to the rules and it was really only local people from outside of Hfx. The ski resort had sent email messages to the pass holders not to come because of the restrictions and people adhered to it. Thus- result easing of restrictions and everybody can be back skiing today. As someone upthread said- we can be proud of the initiative of businesses and individuals to help fight this pandemic.

This is from the UK.

People with disabilities in Canada have not been prioritized for extra care/ services to keep them safe, or for the vaccine.

It would make sense for many people with disabilities to get priority. That would particularly true when lungs and immune systems are compromised as is the case for many people who are disabled

None of us with our individual physiologies knows exactly how covid could affect us. There are no reports in Canada about whether the covid deaths in Canada significantly involved people with other conditions like mobility impairment - we don't know. Maybe our organs work a little harder to keep up at times, already.

We know diabetes is a factor - obesity. What if our primary conditions are risks for conditions that cause worse cases of covid? What if things like general cardio fitness is a factor for those who can't help being less physically active? What if we are predisposed to something we don't know about or is not well understood in relationship to our existing condition, in particular how we might react to covid or to treatment for covid?

It would be nice if we could just all (as wish it) get immunized.

It is starting to look like by the summer.

Guy came in the store today claiming he didn't have to wear a mask, as he'd been vaccinated. Apparently, that is NOT the current rules. Also, he was apparently middle-aged, so how did he get vaccinated?

I'm getting quite tired of this BS. Do as you're told, or stay out of the store. Don't make a minimum wage clerk, either 70-ish, or 17-ish, argue with you.
