When the AIDS epidemic was going on, before they found drugs that brought the virus down to negligable levels did they shut the world down to protect those people from colds and flus? Did they ever shut the world down to keep the flu and colds and a myriad of other bugs, from all the at risk groups?

I think you are probably oversimplifying the broader social and public health ramifications that are secondary to this.

And I see you over simplifying and whatabouting here too. It's not helpful. Sure, we definitely need better services for people who are homeless, who struggle with poverty or mental health concerns. That does not mean we should ignore this or downplay its impact.

I was sort of asking why is reporting (constantly in the news) on all the numbers necessary? Why not just the serious cases? That would be a more realistic perspective of the threat. Because when they keep saying a bunch more people have it but they are in recovery at home...people are only focused on how many have it, not how many are in present danger. They don't do this with the flu...which can also be very serious to higher risk groups.

I appreciate knowing this information. My behaviour might change if I know I'm surrounded by it. I'm taking care of myself well now and may only isolate a bit more if I'm surrounded by it. The information may not apply to you. Don't listen to it or follow it if that's the case. It is important to me and to others to have the information.

I'm pointing out other angles to be considered. It wasn't long ago that people here were arguing for MAID because of the fact that medical advances have kept people alive so long, and were not concerned about vulnerability to disabled persons because they're lucky to be alive at all. I never argued that

No, because unfortunately it was thought that only certain kinds of people got HIV/AIDs and "those people" didn't have as much value as the rest.

This is an example of whataboutism that isn't useful. We can't change history. We need to make decisions based on best evidence and information. That's what is happening now.

When you point out these other angles it appears like you're saying that we shouldn't do anything about this virus because not enough is being done or has been done about the other issues. If that's not what you're saying, you need to be more clear.

I want you to look out for yourself and stay safe and I am distancing (when you visited I missed you because I felt a bit of a cold coming on, remember? It was brief and may have been I was just a bit run down but I didn't want to take chances and visit the cancer centre). I still think the measures are too extreme based on the facts.

I'm saying shutting everything down is extreme and I'm very skeptical.

And yet the experts who have the proper facts feel differently.
WHO are the experts? CDC? FEMA?

In “A Paradise Built in Hell,” Solnit recalls that, after Hurricane Katrina, she “heard the infamous former Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director Michael Brown tell a group of disaster experts that business was the best leader of recovery because business had the best interests of the community at heart—a curious statement, to say the least.” After Katrina and other disasters, Solnit saw permanent change stymied because of “the men in power who provided some relief and got the city going again but also reinstated the old injustices and discriminations. They acted in their own self-interest as often or more often than in the public interest and sometimes viewed the public as an enemy to be conquered, controlled, and contained. The brief solidarity and harmony ended in part because the business community pitted its interests against those of the majority.”

Public health officials will be glad if they have overreacted and instead of thousands of deaths we have hundreds

the issue for hospitals is space and resources. So Kimmio, you think it’s over blown. Oddly no expert agrees with you

but the issue is that our hospitals operate at close to 100% capacity. All the time

not a lot of room for another 1000 people from Vancouver to find a bed if we are at 100% capacity

so people are having surgery cancelled. People are being sent home. And other issues will bring people to hospital anyway. Heart attacks, strokes, accidents.
society needs to make room for all the sick people. And these cases of Covid 19 can put us over the edge. We have to stop it spreading. We don’t want to become like Italy and have 600 deaths a night

you mention AIDS. No society didn’t shut down At the beginning of that crisis. ( but hospitals cetain,y made massive changes. Most of those changes stayed part of routines. ) Partly because it appeared traceable. Even when they didn’t know exactly how it was transmitted it was obvious that it as close contact transmission.

this seems to be more easily spread. Droplets from a cough

I do think it would be more useful to report the flu better than what it currently has, but there are estimates of overall numbers done.
With this, people really need to see the numbers to help protect the health care system. If we just reported deaths and critical cases, many people would just brush it off.
