I have been watching the new season of “This is us”. Its such a feel good series, I think, because compared to real life, those characters are actually able to talk to each other ( and help each other talk to each other).

We just watched A Fortunate Man tonight. It is based on a Danish novel. It is an excellent movie that looks at role of religion/upbringing on a man's life.

A Fortunate Man

We're watching Knock Down the House. It's about the grassroots movement to challenge the political status quo in the US. AOC is one of the candidates in this documentary. If @Kimmio Laughterlove hasn't seen it, she needs to.

I hope something similar is happening in Canada.

It was great! Thanks @Northwind :) I noticed it advertised/ written about a couple months ago, but had since forgotten about its release date. It was really well done, and hopeful.

I too hope to see more of this in Canada. I’m not really seeing that kind of energy here, though. Maybe just “not yet”.

The 3 monkey rule is being ignored:
We are directed that we shouldn't look, or hear of such opposition to bullism ... be silent!

Thus ineffable status ... dead desires to fight r' SHUE?

Where dissipated sole goes ... redistributed in parts! Like parts of Jude eh boies? You can sense something ready for blowing ... indigoes blue!

Only told by means of myth ... subtle, or sublimated? Down it goes ...

Has anyone seen Shtisel? One of the best series I've seen lately. It isn't exactly recent...5 or 6 yrs old. It's an Israeli production, filmed mostly in Jerusalem. It's an absorbing story about an ultra-orthodox family & particularly the artist, misfit son. Very human problems, celebrations and grief. Never descends into overdone or sappy. I also learned fascinating things about that religion and culture. I couldn't stop watching it...Very highly recommended.
Subtitled in English.

Giancarlo posted about this up thread. My bad. I did search but misspelled Shtisel. I'd like to direct you to his very beautiful post, but I don't know how. Search Shtisel?

We've been watching the series Shtisel on Netflix. We love it.
From Wikipedia:

Shtisel (Hebrew: שטיסל‎) is an Israeli television drama series about a fictional Jewish family living in Geula, Jerusalem.[1] Created and written by Ori Elon and Yehonatan Indursky,[1] the series premiered on 29 June 2013 on yes Oh, and is distributed by the online streaming service Netflix.[2]
The series has been considered innovative for its treatment of an irregular group of Orthodox Jews by stripping them of their political associations and depicting them as "ordinary" people.[3] It follows the lives of Shulem Shtisel (Dov Glickman), the Shtisel patriarch and a Rabbi at the local yeshiva,[4] as well as those of the other members of his family. Shtisel, which runs 12 episodes per season, is set in a religious, Internet-free neighborhood.[5] The community follows strict haredi customs and violating the norms often causes chaos within the family.[6] However, the characters, who are more open to secular lifestyle, reflect Geula's moderation in comparison to their neighbors in Mea She'arim, the adjacent community known for religious extremism.[7]
@ninjafaery it’s post #390. :) Hi Giancarlo. I’m just reposting this post that ninjafaery referred to above.:)

My wife and I also loved Shtisel. We deeply miss it now that we have watched all the episodes.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, too, @ninjafaery !

Thank you, @Kimmio Laughterlove !

Just watched "Ben is back". I wanted to see it when it came to the theatres but it didn't play here. Short summary- a son, with a druggie past, comes home for 1 day- and his mother's love and anguish. It's fairly dark. I had to take breaks watching it, but I wanted to see it. Drugs are complicated.

We have been enjoying "Mr. Selfridge" for the last while. Enjoying is definitely the correct word.. It is about the founding of the Selfridge store in Oxford Street (London, UK, of course). Some interesting characters and twists and turns in the various people's lives.

Oh I loved that show! What a visual treat with the opulent sets and costumes. Great cast of well-developed, interesting characters too.

I watched a documentary called “The Legend of Cocaine Island”. What a wild, amusing, hard to believe, story...a middle aged family guy goes on an adventure to find a legendary buried stash of cocaine on a tropical island...but that’s not all...there are several sub-plots that make it even more intriguing and bizarre. It was very well done. It exceeded expectations.

:)

Watched Chernobyl and liked it, despite the many historical inaccuracies.
Now we're starting the Handmaid's tale.
Apparently some parts were recorded in Cambridge ON. I went to look for some pictures and seems that the city has got lots of grand, beautiful churches - anyone knows the reason? The Central Presbyterian wit the big tower is particularly striking.
We're enjoying the show so far. Locations and photography are amazing, and the plot is kinda scaring - even more if we consider the book that inspired it was written in 1985.

I watched the series High Seas. It is about a cruise ship that is going from Spain to Brazil and there's a murder. It takes place just after WWII and is much like an Agatha Christie story. Twists and turns. Not sure who is good or bad. It was filmed in either Spanish or Portuguese and has English voice overs that work well.

Sounds interesting. I used to love Christie's book when I was a teenager. Have you liked this series?

I did like it. My husband didn't like it as much. I don't think he was an Agatha Christie fan.

I'm thinking it was a Brazillian production so might be in Portuguese. You might be able to find it in the original language if you're interested.
