Well if you are camping in the GTA that may be the case. Step outside of that region and you will find an entirely different situation. There is a big wide world outside the 416/905 bubble.
Gosh, I spent six summers entirely in tents There were storms. But not tent ever blew down on me. Actually, in two of those summer I slept quite often under canoes. Once, I paddled from shore were my campers were sleeping, and slept that night in the bottom of the canoe (the mosquitoes on shore were really bad.)
We've camped all over southern Ontario, a bit in northern Ontario, and a bit in Quebec. No problems thus far.
