I don't understand Vancouver house prices

So, it is easy to see how tough it is, if people are earning the low end of average, or lower, or are between jobs at any point in time, to afford to live here. We just kept falling further behind, couldn't catch up, couldn't afford to do anything let alone struggle with the rent and bills - affected mental and physical health of both of us, the culmination of all these factors broke down the relationship...and voila...that's the risk of living here in these times. Textbook. I can only imagine how larger families struggle. And then as single people it won't be easier...but there it is. I have a love hate relationship with this city because it is home, I grew up on the west coast, I would be horribly depressed in a winter city or rural place, with my mobility challenges, it is scenic here - so much to do if you have money - but it is rough getting by here. I hate the high cost. Sometimes I want to move away, but where will it be any easier? If it's not rent prices, there is something else, like winter, to worry about.

I'd love to visit Montreal. It looks beautiful, but living there, too much winter to deal with. I'd be stuck inside without much choice.
How about Calgary suburbs, close to the LRT and using the +15 system?
Or the East coast.

Not to say you should move or anything, just fun to throw what if's out there.

East Coast thing was a total brain fart. I was just thinking ocean = more moderate temps. They get a fair bit of snow there though!

I don't want to leave BC, to live, really. It's a different vibe in Calgary, a cultural change, too. I like the eclecticism of Van, I really do. Edmonton, definitely not, even though I know people there. And so missed the ocean when I spent about 2 months in Calgary years ago. I grew up near it. I probably have some sad choices ahead.

I love in a suite old house ... cheaper here than in many places ... but if the Irving's get fined (OUT OF EXISTENCE) by internationally driven authorities we could become richer due to less welfare paid out to the Irving Corp ... POSSIBLY A PIPE DREAM BY Celtic DISPLACEMENT THEORY! Then how would I know ... other than watching what government is extorted by such people to avoid paying out money to poor folk. $150MM divided by say 50,000 is not a bad addendum to those at bottom line conditions right. Consider the problem here with seniors declaring bankruptcy ... with all those people living under and dumping behind trees ... the forest would regenerate ...

Who said gypsies were undesirable? Appears to lead to a different tree of logic ... LOGOS?

The tycoons making life harder for us serfs, all over Canada.

http://calgary.craigslist.ca/apa/5146950038.html - nice neighbourhood, 2 bedroom, close to Mount Royal, in Calgary proper, just over $800/ mo.

Comparable newer building, in Langley, an hour drive from town, $1480/ mo. For 2 bedroom. As cheap as that gets.

In an area, Kitsilano, comparable to Mount Royal, $2200.

@ChemGal $800 will get you a bedroom in a shared apt in a half decent, not downtown, neighbourhood. I am a less fancy mixed income neighbourhood paying $650 for basically this.... (Guess I am getting a deal because it's my friend and she is not making any profit renting my room to me.)....my room is smaller. Less kitchen counter space...but basically this is my standard of living...not posh compared to the same $ in Calgary. But it's tough to stay, tough to leave...

There are cheap places to buy. I can offer one - asking $25,000 (appraised at over $30,000) - no reasonable offer refused. Large double lot - forested. Electric baseboard heating, fully insulated, three bedrooms (one used as a den), great room. Wood cooking stove and electric range. Full bath. Septic system. Needs a new well. Partially furnished. Paved road maintained year round - school bus goes by the door. Great hunting, fishing (two rivers within walking distance), snowmobiling, four-wheeling. Use as permanent home or camp.
One draw-back. There are practically no employment opportunities within commuting distance.

But what a great retirement home! Especially if you're a pensioner and can sell a home in a more expensive part of the world to put in the new well!

Or for someone who is self-employed and does not need regular access to facilities beyond basics. An artist or writer, perhaps.

Not aboot Vancouver House Prices but, rather rent

Just spent the day with my brother on his new home

In downtown Vancouver

On the water

$150/month, utilities included. If he wants a shower, he can either swim or go to the local gym or pay $1 per shower at the local facilities

Also, my brother tells me I can get a studio apt in downtown Vancouver (in the Hard n Wet End) for $800/month

Gorgeous sunset. Universe is being tricky with me again (met a lot of people who were engaging and unique, from an indian who was wondering why everyone seemed so sad & who spontaneously asked me if I was born again -- I get that, sometimes; i think one time I even had an antireligionist think I was some kind of pastor-type and was trying to get my goat by saying that satan was a great guy, i really couldn't hear what he was saying, so i nodded and laughed and smiled a lot -- to 'Irish Paul', a film industry set painter who invited me to some kind of cast party...). Walked some urban train tracks that ended up in bushes. Got compliments on my 'Keep Austin Weird' tie-die T.

NICE :3

How far is the closest grocery & hospital etc facilities?

And is the dwelling internet-friendly?

Local store (bread, milk, canned goods, pop & chips) is a couple of klms up the road, by the post office. I think there are two in the area. Supermarket about 20 klms. New hospital about an hour's drive.
