How was church today?

Apparently they're planning to present those grand old 'carols' like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and maybe Jingle Bells. Can hardly wait.

Although from what I overheard of the talent and consistency of the pageant practice last Sunday, well, sometimes known is better than unknown.

Today I went to @GeoFee 's congregation. What a great experience! They have an amazing praising band, great songs were sung and George' s sermon was wonderful. He shared parts of his journey with us and highlighted how God has cared for him since his baptism. This sermon went deep in my heart and transformed my humor and my day. Thanks, George!

Going to church this evening - annual Candlelight service filled with music - which will be the last in this sanctuary - going to miss this place.

Church was great. Pastor gave a solid message, snack time was great, and a number of us practiced a musical presentation we are doing on the 23rd.

Autonomous motions ...

Minister in home church spoke on mystery, unknown, darkness, occult and what we don't know ... including Esterification and sticky subjects like the disposal of the Judean People if Ester didn't act decisively about who she really was ... an underground force of the Persians under Xenophon Phobic powers ... thus hae M'N was suspended ... in a back room shafting!

Is this a virtue? No one really knows ... as usual a human trait in errorism ... it can be a hairy trend ... worth testing and trysts? Hoo knows ...

Like secularism ... it is a tacky topic!

It is sad to lose a sacred space, Carolla. I hope tonight is meaningful . . . I am sure it will be.

Children's pageant today. Was very awesome. Bunch of scenes from the congregation's "Memories of Christmas". I thought the congregation were going to lose it laughing at the skit depicting four of the "founding men" going to get the Christmas tree, the one that Ray went an extra hour's tramp into the woods for, that had a such a large "hole" in the middle that it couldn't be disguised when put up in the sanctuary. Some of our children/youth appear to have some real thespian/comedic talent. Our youth minister is so friggin' amazing, and the Junior Church superintendent was a marvel with the slide prompting for the kids. In a slightly strange moment, for some reason, known only to the liturgist, and I'm not even sure if that was the Rev or the Youth, the scripture reading was from Baruch...

The pageant sounds great. What is the difference in roles between your youth minister and your Junior Church superintendent?

In my church, youth minister was a paid position leading the youth, providing support to the Christian Education team, and such. Sunday School superintendant was a volunteer who did the administrative stuff like registering the kids in the right classes, making sure there were enough copies of the curriculum being used, stocking the supply room, and stuff. Though we didn't have youth minister/director position until I was (I think) in high school so the superintendent was basically in charge, reporting to the Christian Education committee of the board.

I guess at my home church in Toronto we had much the same arrangement. We had both a paid Youth Pastor and a volunteer Sunday School Leader (who just happened to be the Senior Pastor's wife).

Sermon today was by Tony Snow from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. He was speaking about how in the aboriginal community they take from the Bible what is valuable and combine this with their own spiritual traditions. One of the interesting things he mentioned was about when he was a boy his Grandfather had said, "the forest is beautiful." Tony had asked his Grandfather why the forest is beautiful and the answer was, "it is beautiful because of all the diversity, the different trees and foliage and different colours that all come together." A worthwhile sermon by a wise man, glad I was there today. Also, a video from our lead minister John Pentland who has been off for several months having had hip surgery. Looks like he is doing better and rehab is going well, John said he hopes to be back in January. We have a number of interesting folks in ministry at Hillhurst and John is one of them so will be welcome to have him back to share his perspective come January.

That's pretty well it. We can't afford a full-time Youth Minister, so we are lucky enough to have a full-time position we share 50% with Presbytery. What kind of arrangement/grant thing we can work up with "region" remains to be seen. He's been hugely influential around these parts; there's a potentially totally wonderful "travelling theatre troupe" thing going on this summer in this presbytery thanks to his efforts/talents.

Next week the children's program on the smudged Twinkle ... dark star syndrome that pops up in an incident like Lucid flashes ... irregularity in the knight of Skye ... essence of Celt connections to the franc ... and Bonnie Prince browned a bit ... something to toast in your memories ... that's Char'l eh!

Lucie prodded the Dark Prince on ... and so it (heh) needs to go --- James Reeves?

Church was good today. We watched a moving video of "O Holy Night." Pastor gave a solid message on not celebrating a commercialized Christmas.

Late in the service, the pastor told us we had a special guest who had come to sing. She came to the front wearing a pink and white hanbok. When the pastor asked her to introduce herself, she told us she was a famous singer from YouTube. She then began to sing - Jingle Bells. Her singing was okay, but her choice of song was so not appropriate for church.

After the service, we had a short business meeting where the pastor told us how we are going to organize ourselves in 2019. I'm sad to say that the church will remain very attractional in nature.

For today's sermon Rev. Sheena came out wearing a construction worker hardhat. The scripture was from Mark about John the Baptist coming to smooth the way for Jesus. Sheena spoke of how we have a lot to thank the construction workers of our world for. Being able to get around on nice surfaces and thanks as well to the snow plow operators for smoothing our way in winter. Sheena then spoke about how each of us can work on smoothing some of the mountains that separate us from one another whether the mountains are cultural or political or whatever. Not quite the sermon I was expecting on the Joy Sunday in Advent, but very good nonetheless. Also, as bonus had a bike ride alongside the river after church which is nice to be able to do in December. So guess I got my Joy fix after all. :)
