It was in the red hymn book, I remember that, so not really surprised. No national anthems in Singing the Living Tradition. It is intended for use on both sides of the 49th.

Really? Are we not free then, given that we did not join the Revolution? Would Canada be freer if we had? How about those who were persecuted for remaining loyal to the Crown and had to leave their homes in many cases (yes, I have Loyalist blood)? Didn't make them especially free.

The fact is, if the Americans hadn't rebelled, they probably would have gone through a more gradual process similar to what happened here and would probably be just as free as us today. In some ways, they might have been freer in the long haul. For instance, slavery would have been abolished in 1833, when it was abolished throughout the British Empire (though it had largely already died out here due to various local legislation passed here in the colonies). No bloody, brutal war in the 1860s needed.

I had a chance to listen to a sermon today. My ministry partner preaches a certain number of Sundays per year and this was one of her Sundays, although I shared in the liturgy. She used Matthew 11:25-30, and spoke about the contradictory image of Jesus setting us free and yet still telling us to take his yoke upon us. Even an easy yoke is still a yoke - so what did that imply? It was an interesting take on the passage. I was scheduled to do Children's Time - but it's summer and we had no children, so we just sang the Children's Hymn ("Jesu, Jesu") and moved on with the service. She's on vacation for the next four Sundays, so I'll be flying solo for a month.

I spoke on the same passage revsdd. But my take was that the yoke makes the burden seem easier, lighter. The work is the same, but it is easier to do. Although I talked about different kinds of yokes, the one I found easiest to apply to my own life was the one used to carry pails. In my farm days, I carried a lot of heavy pails of milk from the milking machine to the dairy. Oh, how a yoke would have made it a little less onerous! I also spoke about some of the challenges our churches face today, especially with younger folks and others who do not see any relevance in attending church or worshipping in traditional ways. So, we have work to do, and there are several things Jesus can help us with (like a yoke) to make this work seem a little easier.
