How to deter dogs.

I am a cat person. I scoop litter boxes, but I could not pick up someone else's poop.
I favour cats. A whole other subject. I guess I like all animals, but I find dogs need too much attention for me and my lifestyle. I have fallen in love with some dogs though. Just do not want to take them home.

Just do not want to take them home.

*sigh* And quite right you are. *Surveys the noisy hairy large hound on her favourite chair, actively stolen from the cat, smelly dog blankets everywhere, large muddy dog prints on many surfaces, nose prints on all windows and doors, the extraordinary lengths one must go to in order to keep pans of date squares, multiple cookies/tarts safe from her predations*

And re the repellent, not much consistently works in my opinion. Dogs don't like citrus? Lucy ate 6 lemon cookies, complete with candied citron, real lemon zest, lemon extract, last week; obviously she didn't get the memo. Dogs love funky smells. Now, they don't love vinegar, generally, but someone would have to go out and spray it every day.

I don't understand why this would be an issue. Does a dog have to stand right at the mailbox spot?
Dogs actually aren't allowed at all public spaces unless they are service animals. Ie. schools, playgrounds.
I generally go to pick up my mail at the end of a walk with my dog so he would be right at the mailbox with me.

The differences between dog and cat people are interesting. I read somewhere the acid test is if you like dogs "kissing" your face (hate it). Dog owners like the affection apparently (big yuk). I have a friend with a Chihuahua and loves that the dog looks at her all the time when she's awake. That would really creep me out. Seems all the things that annoy me about dogs are considered cute by their people. Like I mentioned though, some dogs are wonderful. I guess all dog people's dogs are wonderful. My favourites are labs.

And I would no more wish a dog to lick my face than fly to the moon. Lucy has other ways of showing affection; many of them consist simply of lying sprawled out in the same room as I, snoring gently but listening attentively for words or sounds that indicate "walk" or "food". Also, I'm also a cat person. I am owned by a 10 year old ragdoll named Atwood, affectionately known as Fatwood due to her immense girth. She and the dog are not in love with each other (and yes it happens, I had a black lab and a siamese once who were best buds and slept curled up together, etc.), but co-exist reasonably peacefully. Occasionally if Lucy is in a playful/over-excited mood, she will lunge at the cat, causing her to bolt through her cat door to her second home in the basement.

I'm with you Bette!! NO dogs "kissing" my face!!!

Lucy is lucky. Our old kitty used to take a swing at the dog from time to time if he got too rambunctious for her liking.

That's a good idea in theory. There's so much to smell at the mailboxes. :)
I'm just thinking if such a deterrent existed, I don't think it would be a problem for it to be spread over the little 'alcove' area that mailboxes are in plus the grassy area and someone could have their dog stand on the sidewalk if they typically do pick up the mail while walking their dog. I do find it's rare to see dog droppings right on the sidewalk, it's moreso on a grass area especially on corners or hard surfaces - patio stone, or extra areas seen with things like mailboxes, power boxes where it seems to be an issue. So spraying areas like that if it meant a dog wouldn't want to step right there shouldn't be a problem IMO. The problem is I don't think something like that really exists.

We now have 10cm of slushy snow there, can"t start any experiment. Should have thought of it when it started in the summer.

Have a new pup and in the process of where to poop training. She is a spirited young critter who keeps a smile on our faces by her antics.

But what about the test with cats - getting up onto the counters where food is after using their litter boxes. I've really learned that dislike from my Mom, plus I have the really bad cat allergies (as far as I know she hasn't developed any to cats).

Actually, not really true. I got this cup from my son after he insisted that every dish he has he finds cat hair in it. I am sure he is exaggerating.

Cat hair can be a very important ingredient. We had two bengal cats. We felt we had come a long way when we agreed to a compromise where they did not help with food prep. They always continued to go on the counters and would get down when asked......not always for a long time. :ROFLMAO:
