These aren’t the greatest quality photos but these are two trees that I find especially pretty. One is lilac, and I don’t know the yellow one. I’ve seen them grow so close together their branches intertwine, which is especially gorgeous. I don’t think they were out until mid May last year - they might be a tiny bit early, because I took a mother’s day photo of two intertwined last year (a year ago already?! Seems like yesterday, yet, so long ago!). I just remembered where that was.EFD93814-3C0B-482A-BF6B-BAEC088C5E51.jpeg92080623-46DD-4AB3-A2C5-A33897375158.jpeg

Oh Lilacs! I love those. Mine blooms around the first of June - but I can see buds forming :-) I think the one with yellow blooms above is a Laburnum - also called a Golden Chain Tree. So beautiful!!

Our trees don't have leaves yet so I guess we'll carry on waiting for blossoms. They don't call Saskatchewan 'Next Year Country' without reason.
Never heard of “ Next year country” before. My hunch would have been that that expression means the Saskatchewians are really laid back and take it easy.

Haskaps finally look green from the window. The leaves have been there for a while, but before they were fully open from a distance they didn't look green, the underside (or outer part as it was earlier) isn't green and is similar in colour to the branches.
Last I looked 1 garlic plant made it's way up. About to check for more, but I don't expect to see any change, cold weather blew in yesterday evening. I don't think we got any snow at least, did hear the rain all night.

My garlic is 10 cm out, I cleaned up the veggie bed, but its too early to plant anything. I did plant the sweet peas out, though. I would like to try this method where you keep adding soil on top of potatoes to keep growing more in a round bucket. Anybody ever did that?

I hill mine up in the garden boxes, haven't done a specific potato container though.

I went out and checked, I think all of the hardneck garlic is actually up. I think the white garlic I bought last year is soft neck, that's not showing. Neither is the elephant garlic. Will have to wait and see how those do, we did get a pretty severe cold snap and the raised garden beds probably aren't as protective as growing in the ground would be.
I was happy to see all the hardneck up though, with the cool weather I didn't expect that.

I have not grown potatoes - but a friend here in the city has a huge 'urban farm' in her backyard - mostly on her pool deck! She grows lots of potatoes every year - in big deep trash cans - seems to work really well. I wanted to try some this year with my little gardeners at the school where I (used to  ) volunteer. I hope you give it a try Mrs.A.

I grow potatoes in trenches in my garden. Dig a narrow trench about one foot deep. Add about three inches of peat moss. Place potatoes about one foot apart in trench. cover with a bit of dirt and peat moss. As green growth shows through the dirt keep adding more dirt to bury the leaves. The dirt from your trenches will eventually all be back on top of the potatoes

keep ensuring that no potatoes are showing above the dirt. Different types of potatoes have different colored flowers. Quite pretty. When all the green has died off, end of summer , they are ready to dig

it you can take them out early to have baby potatoes

one issue I have is getting them all out. Any ones you is come up next year. Hence , as I move my beds around to rotate I get potatoes coming up all over. It they are good ones to pull as early baby potatoes

you can plant them in a similar way in a big bin or garbage pail. With holes in the bottom

watering regularly is important for potatoes. Too much or not regular8y causes them to have brown centers

I saw a bush that looked like reddish purple/ magenta roses, maybe, that are just trying to bloom. But the leaves were not prickly. Usually - this city being known as a "little England" - there are more rose bushes around here...? Maybe it's a bit early for them. Not having my own garden...I forget specifically what tends to come out when. Except tulips and daffodils. They're usually out first, and cherry blossoms. Daffodils have come and gone this year. I see a few tulips around, still.

2 of the haskaps have flowers now, they go so quickly from very little green to in full bloom. Other 2 should flower soon too, they are a different variety so the timing doesn't surprise me but they do cross pollinate.
