I'm just cross posting this - from the movies thread (I hope that's okay!) - I know you all would enjoy this movie -

Wow! Watched a wonderful documentary last night called "The Gardener" - has won many film festival awards etc. About Frank Cabot (now deceased) who created an extraordinary garden - 20 acres if I remember correctly!) on his private family property in Le Malbaie. Fantastic to hear his commentary about how he created it over time. And of course the visuals are stunning. It's now open for tours only 4 times each summer - we are going to see if we can snag tickets & go on a road trip next summer to see it in person - it made such an impression on us. I think you may be able to watch it on the CBC site - CBC TV

I like to visits gardens but find them overwhelming.

But I love to see my neighbours make changes to gardens over time

My veggie garden is almost done. Squash are still ripening on the vine. Last few carrots and parsnips still in ground. Late raspberries still producing. But otherwise it is mostly done. Sprinklers out away

I need to plant my garlic for next year hopefully next week

I'm in a similar state, although the squash had to be taken off a while ago or else the cold would have caused them to rot. I had hoped to make borscht by now. We hosted Thanksgiving yesterday for 10 and some guests left our house this morning. Borscht making just didn't fit in with the energy I had up to this point.
Reminded me though I should go bug Chemguy to bring in the potatoes! I'm hoping they are ok, it may have been a bit too cold even in the ground  We'll see.
Carrots and parsnips can wait, beets are my next plan. Some carrots will be picked for that too.
And yes, time to plant garlic soon. I plan to use some of what I grew. I'm considering trying a 2nd variety (I have no idea what I have now other than it's hardneck, there was no info at the seed store other than it being local). I want to get it all planted this week though, so I guess that depends on what I buy. Farmers market would be my source preference for 2nd variety, but I don't know of any decent ones that happen before Saturday.

Once again gardening season is almost over. I still have carrots in the ground, they last better there than in the fridge. A bit of Swiss chard still growing. And fall raspberries are ripening every day

Garlic has been planted for next year and the blueberries have been wrapped. Compost and manure has been added so I am almost done

Made roasted squash and carrot soup for lunch. All the ingredients from the garden

Apples are ready to pick , which is overwhelming. One tree gives half bushel of apples and we have 15 trees. Everyone I know is given apples but I expect the deer will eat what we don’t pick

This year I am giving over a garden bed to tree nuts. So far I have added maple keys, beech nuts, horse chestnuts and walnuts from area trees. Still have to plant acorns I foraged. Not sure if any will sprout but fingers crossed

Oh goodness - nice to see this thread resurrected :-) I do enjoy reading about everyone's garden exploits. Will be interesting to hear how your 'nut bed' sprouts next year Lastpointe. Interesting idea!
I've been harvesting snap peas & 'sweet heat' peppers from my new 'urban farm' planter box - so tasty! And some young leaf lettuce from my other planter - still okay - no frost yet! My watermellon radishes are a bust I think - won't bother with that type again.

I bought those at the local farm ($2 each). Looking for suggestions how to prepare them other than cutting in half and baking them ( heating the whole oven for one little squash seemed such a waste).

Could turn one into roasted squash soup. Add onions, garlic and carrots to the roasting pan. Then purée with broth, chicken or vegetable. Heat

I also slice squash into half inch thick slices and pan fry with butter

Chop up and boil, then add some flour, spices and make little squash cupcakes to sit in the Side of your plate. Sort of like making popovers

My husband makes DELCIOUS stuffed squash (and it's very healthy too!) - I think this is recipe he uses - Acorn Squash with Coconut Chickpea Stuffing You don't have any acorn squash in your photo - but maybe in future! The yellow squash with scalloped edge is "Patty Pan" variety - there are lots of recipes if you google. Is the large oval one a spaghetti squash?

We tried a new squash recipe last night - SO delicious - uses Delicata Squash (peel is edible) Such a great season for us squash lovers!! Maple-Roasted Delicata Squash with Red Onion

We have done spaghetti squash on the BBQ too, one way to use in the summer when it's too hot for the oven. I do roast the seeds if it feels like there's enough where the effort is worthwhile.

We eat spaghetti squash, have done so for years. When we had a houseful of hungry teenagers I used to cut one in half lengthwise and fill both sides with a meat loaf mixture that I made it up as I went along, using what was in the fridge and 'worked'. Sometimes it was a fish cake mixture for a change.
Once we were down to two of us this was too much. Lately we have been cutting off a one or two rounds and zapping them in the microwave. An advantage is that I can pick up the veggie and leave the excess moisture behind.
One of our daughters eats zapped spaghetti squash with butter and seasonings of her choice. She claims it is the best snack food EVER!

Yes, spaghetti squash it is. I didn’t grow up with squash or pumpkin- so still not used to cooking it.

Yesterday was finally nice Sunny and 10. Hubby trimmed bushes. I weeded and prepped my beds. Garlic is up about six inches. Rhubarb poking up

and overnight more snow

spring. Where are you?

I put some lettuce in a window box i side and put it out the other day to catch some sun, only to forget it at night by -3, it doesn’t look that great anymore.
Moved the catio so I can clean and paint the deck - but, still too cold. My sprouts are the ones that grow best on the kitchen counter.
