Actually you just proved that disability rights are on people's radar - it's being covered in the mainstream press. I didn't say that everything is a bed of roses for PWD because I know from my own experience and from that of my cohorts that it is not. This does not mean that the issue is not on people's radar - it means that we need to improve understanding and ask specifically for things to help us and not just talk about how things are unfair - the people in the second article you posted are doing just that. I have seen very little about the challenges faced by LGBTQA in various aspects of their lives. This is what I am trying to do.

And you basically said that my experience didn't count because it did not reflect your reality. I have said that I am very fortunate compared to my cohorts but that doesn't mean I understand their issues less.

No I didn't. I tried to tell my story to let you know that I saw things from your point of view before - I was on a different path wanting to change things for PWDs also but from the employment perspective and having been an advocate before it hit me that something is not right here. Before having seen both sides plus personal experience I had no idea they were almost competing ways to look at it. And I took up where i left off before and I looked at the issues more in depth from the disability rights perspective -and i feel it is a more just perspective all things considered.

The second article was from a large disability rights group. The first was pointing out the persisting poverty issues 4 years after the UN convention was ratified.

But the fact that there is persistent poverty does not mean that the issue is not on people's radar - it means that more change is required. You make a huge leap in logic.

I think it's horrible that Canada is not fulfilling its obligations. I think it might also be a UN-thing - we ratified Kyoto and then when we changed government we largely ignored that commitment. They also talk about supporting veterans and then turn their back on them at the same time. I think all of this is horible but it doesn't mean that it's not on people's radar.

Educate - give examples (like the one about the lids on the ferry) to show people how they can help. Lack of knowledge is a huge barrier to getting people to change.

I agree. But when the government comes out and says everything is hunky dory for PWDs and never has any government done better. Then spends gobs on fancy looking employment programs that are filling stats but not meeting needs . People assume everything's hunky dory. We have the odd article about PWDs - not exactly top news stories. There are many other things to worry about. But if you are a PWD and in poverty you can imagine it hits people pretty hard. The rights groups didn't get well heard on their concerns about this. They are non-profit, have little money and no disability rights commission. So it's rare if a PWD issue does make the news unless it's buried on page 20 somewhere. Or a Paralympian does something good or terrible.. Or a local interest story like your bank one.

You have to let people know what's wrong before we can make it better.

there were actually 7 suicides noted in the Bible ------

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
CRIME; CRIMES.

Suicide ---http://biblehub.com/dictionary/c/crimes.htm

No special law is found against this crime, for it is included in the prohibition against killing. Contrary to the practice and the philosophy of paganism, the act was held in deep abhorrence by the Hebrews because of the high value placed on human life.
It was held inexcusable that any but the most degraded and satanic should lay hands on their own lives. Only the remorse of the damned could drive one to it, as witness Saul (1 Samuel 31:4) and Judas (Matthew 27:5).you can read more here if you so deaire ----

US,
Are you aware of King James attitude about making war on people that were aware of his thinking he was absolute ... as an authority. Are authorities tending towards corruption ... except when oppressed below the authoritarian radar?

Such is a humbling concept ... like KJ in his disposition that all common people should be de void of thought ... just like He who preferred people stupid enough to breed like animals and feed the war machine as fodder ... or at least cheap labour. That type of thinking continues in the sense that ... low life people don't deserve to even think ... and this thought raises in light form from the souers of the world to inflict the hie-rupts in the paradigm ... sort of a Zeus Syndrome .. they explode when seeing what gods' representatives hid from them in the tapestry of life ... occultism at it best!

This is a dark prints form we should look more deeply into ... if you have a vision including mental separation ... or depth thereof ...

But if you despise other books that are suggested by the Gos Pell of John ... you can't see the good news about escapism ... an theory of old Goads ...

Jim Reeves used to sing about it ... as in He'll Have to Go ... that's Southern oblique Gospel! Much akin to obtuse as an OBI to those expecting nothing else than what they know! hat we don't know as dark is dangerous not to learn about. Take a little levity along to lighten the way ... or you too could be captivated by de Nous! The Love to know is phenomenal, so say numb in US according to the best Kant ... a' tilde a'?

Was Jasus a hero martyr, or just suicidal about his desire to know ...

This is often mistaken by people that don't believe we should get out of the present Maas (floe) ... and thus remain in an emotional pit ... Jacobean well is a good metaphor!

Then there are extreme conservatives that don't believe in any change is good as they like things as they are ... no evolution what-so-ever ... but alteration of words and myths is good to support passionate representatives of God who despise thinking dae mons ...

Isn't it grand that God confuses us with words so that we remain unknowledgeable to what that IDEAL-ism really desires in an alternate state of apocalypse? You did know that apocalypse is a metaphor for awakening? Words can cut to the core of what isn't the way it appears ... the incarnation of psyche as a true whetting! Thus the living ... wha Terres ... loaded with wee critters ... never ignore the wee things!

Chaos is chaos regardless of extreme states like pathological passions or psychopathic thought patterns in the dark pool --- RL Stevenson on My Shadow! Stevenson valued wisdom ... even esteemed it as a virtual unknown power at the time ... too much esteem an confidence however can bloe a person away ...

You also have to show them how to make things better in a language they understand. Work needs to be done at the micro and macro level.
I don't know how to cultivate empathy for the disability rights (from a rights/ disability studies perspective) concerns in people waiting to shoot them down as soon as I speak. I've been feeling that here a few times.

Speak in a way that people understand. Don't put people on the defensive by calling them out - use I messages. I feel X when I hear or see ppl do Y, I would prefer Z (like you did with the lid example). Saying PWD live in poverty because you ppl are all ablesist and because you disagree with me you know nothing/are ignorant/prejudice just puts people on the defensive and they are not going to be warm to your suggestions or cause.

In DBT we are taught DEAR MAN for interpersonal effectiveness and this has helped me a lot. I think you may find it helpful in your advocacy work http://www.dbtselfhelp.com/html/ie_handout_8.html

Describe (as though you are a reporter - just the facts)
Express
Assert
Reinforce

Mindful
Appear confident (but not over confident or condescending)
Negotiate

@Kimmio I would find it more helpful if you quoted something from a link or explained what you felt was significant or why I might be interested. Also, I would prefer not to have to download a document from a web site that I don't know (as per your second link).

I use my phone because it's much easier for me to text (gotten fast at it) and more portable/ comfortable here except I can't cut and paste from articles using it, sorry. And I can't flip back and forth and remember what to text!

The first link is about what disability studies is (again).

The second is the history of the disability rights movement - albeit a bit of an outdated document not reflecting the last few years.

As long as it's your case - your decision -- my case - my decision - I'm fine with that. I would absolutely fight against any proposal to have one person's case be another person's decision. Including if that another person is a doctor.
Agreed .... and I would be there fighting as well.
