Ebola Outbreak

Thanks for that, I didn't know the background of this news. Sounds she likely never was infected.
No, you were right. 2 different stories from what I could tell. The lab researcher with the vaccine didn't work for WHO.
WHO was planning on flying on of their people out of Africa (Liberia) so they could be treated for Ebola in Germany. Beyond that, dunno, the remaining articles were in very broken English. It sounded like maybe the person was too sick to fly? Whether it was just delayed, or the trip cancelled I really don't know.

I googled it and found that it had already happened before in 2009, when someone poked through her three layers of gloves. She was well as well- they gave her a vaccination from Canada, which had only been tried on mice until then. Sounds like this happened exactly the same- just why don't they have a vaccine by now?
Back then, they didn't isolate the woman until the fifth day- the usual time for symptoms starting is 7- 10 days, and they didn't think that she would be contagious before symptoms are starting.

Oops - I usually check the dates!
Ebola mutates quickly, which makes developing a vaccine difficult. I think there are also concerns about safety. With the fever that Ebola causes, it's possible that the antigens in the vaccine themselves would cause too high of a fever. I'm not sure if this is a problem that is known, just my basic understanding.

Even if a vaccine is developed, giving it to the general population in Africa is going to be a big problem. Look at how people are treating the foreigners now. What happens when we give a vaccine to people with early symptoms and they get sicker? Or giving it to healthy people - a nightmare! There's way too much distrust.

I wonder if a vaccine is ever going to be the solution for Ebola. Antibodies are another possibility, but people can also have bad reactions to those too. We do it for other diseases, like tetanus. If I ever think I've been infected with it, I might be given that choice.

ChemGal,
I wonder if they are really close to a vaccine and that's why they want to have the patients come to Germany.
It doesn't sound as if those care conditions could ever be introduced in Africa- if you can wear those protective suits only three hours, you probably can't wear them more than 30 minutes in the African heat.
Doctors without Borders are very active in Africa, I believe they are the main health organization helping down there. They are presently fundraising to meet the needs. I suggest everyone here following this thread, please donate!
I cannot imagine putting myself at risk like that. (I can't deal with blood anyway, usually have to look away when I get blood taken or I faint). Yes, we are exposed to a couple of germs in the hospital, but in general, they are all treatable.

The news has reported that one of the two American volunteers, infected with Ebola, is enroute to the US for treatment. I really hope one the experimental treatments is beneficial.

Both are supposed to be coming back. Donald Trump is being an idiot and trying to whip up fear around it (OMG we're all going to get to Ebola even though they'll be in isolation under the watch of CDC!) and creating opposition but, really, what country is going to let it's nationals die in a foreign hospital when their condition may be salvageable at home?

Sorry to hear it's just one when they were planning for both to be treated in Atlanta.

It is my understanding, that both will be returning to the USA. The specially equipped airplane can only transport one at a time.

Thanks! I had missed that part earlier. I was worried it meant one was too sick to travel right now.

Can you imagine being one of the "healthy volunteers" for the next round of trials? I wonder how they get those. Maybe some drug addicts who badly need money?
