Hysterical contagion is a strong form of social contagion, which describes the copycat effect of imitative behaviour based on the power of suggestion and word of mouth influence, because the symptoms often include those associated with clinical hysteria.

Although it won't be well received now, this is essential reading for anyone who is interested in understanding why government responded the way they did.

You can read this and still agree the actions were appropriate (or not). Either way it is an excellent, plain-english breakdown of the data assumptions and events which got us from January to September 2020.

I hope people read this in full irrespective of their position.

To me the biggest example of why we should do what we can to mitigate this disease is the disaster in the USA. Almost 200,000 dead because “trumpets“ believe the lies told by the president. And are now entrenched in their beliefs

so if we want to see what happens when there are no rules We can look at the usa

on the other hand, I wish Canadians were not so smug. We have not done a good job. We have far too many deaths. And we have also decimated businesses

Trudeau is quoted today saying they were having discussions in January and making plans. Huh? Not so much. No one watched the deaths of elderly in Italy and thought. Gee I wonder if that could happen here? It’s not rocket science. The vulnerable needed to be protected. The young and healthy were ok for the most part

and we are sitting with way too many deaths

I don't? I think I do. Seems to me you post a lot of articles without citing where they came from. Maybe not today. But you often do. And then random videos by whoever is saying what you are tuned to hearing.

Approx. 690,000 die from flu and complications worldwide yearly.
Almost 1 million have died from COVID since January to September...

These diseases are not in competition for attention or the game of "which is more serious" blah blah blah.

We just have another new and added problem, and it's COVID.

Johns Hopkins University, which has been tracking the pandemic from the start, said modeling showed that disruptions in healthcare due to Covid-19 could cause the deaths of almost 6,000 additional children every day.

Suicide and drug overdoses are killing more young people than COVID-19 as the two pre-existing epidemics have been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield warns.

In an interview with the Buck Institute for Research on Aging earlier this month, Redfield laid out that suicide and drug overdose have claimed more young lives during the pandemic than COVID-19, a disease that has been attributed to thousands of deaths nationwide this year.

"We're seeing, sadly, far greater suicides now than we are deaths from COVID,” Redfield explained. “We're seeing far greater deaths from drug overdose that are above the excess that we had as background than we are seeing the deaths from COVID.”

So what are you saying? We should just ignore COVID? Why is this a competition of diseases for you?

I would think if this was the Bubonic Plague or any pandemic caused by anything......that what we should now be acknowledging is that we also need to be preparing for mental health surges as part of a plan put in place for pandemic preparedness.

Because part of the remedy for COVID or any pandemic, includes some isolation and protection and now we know, we must also be prepared for a surge in vulnerable people with mental health problems and drug use.....which we were not, but now we know, the question now becomes, will we?
Despite the fact that we knew we were due for a pandemic, and consistently said SARS taught us a lesson, we were not prepared.

Suddenly people are interested in mental health and addictions. Where was the concern before the pandemic? :confused:

This does not need to be either/or, one or the other.

And yet it is ... what was not dealt with before the pandemic is getting worse not better because of the mismanagement of the pandemic.

Because it was not a priority before the pandemic when people needed a "yes but". When have you expressed concern about these issues before the pandemic.
