@Seeler - haha, the balcony crowd. (my old church had one of them too). yes, there are groups that tend to gather together for various reasons. More common at my older church, i think, or maybe I just havent spotted at the newer church. Hard for newbies to remember all the names.

Thinking back to my UCCan days, I grew up in that church (baptised, confirmed, and finally married there) so I knew people pretty well. For those of us who were longtime regulars, name tags would have seemed redundant. But having changed churches a couple times over the past couple decades, I did appreciate the UU habit of using them. Helped me get names and faces straight a lot quicker than I might have otherwise. Even returning this Sunday, it helped when I was getting to know some of the new faces that had started coming during my "downtime".

I find that printing a church photo directory every 5 to 10 years helps a lot in getting to know people and put names to faces. Even after a decade in my present church, I occasionally come home to look up a person who stopped to chat with me at coffee time and talked as through they knew me. I'm also getting braver at saving 'sorry, senior's moment, I've forgotten your name.'

But that's not much help to a newcomer (potential new member) who has just walked in the door and likely has no idea if you even have a directory. At the very least, the ushers or greeters should have some kind of name tag or other way to identify "hey, talk to me".

We have a folder (welcome kit) that the greeters hand out to newcomers and visitors - giving information about our church. I think a few copies of the director might also be available. Greeters and ushers introduce themselves - ushers inquire 'where would you like to sit?' as they walk them down the aisles and open the gates for them (gated pews). Then hopefully they will be introduced to those sitting near them.

But yes, name tags of greeters and ushers would be a good idea. I may bring that up.

As far as I can tell the the prefix cis applied to gender was first used by a self identified transsexual Carl Buijs in 1995 who needed a term to represent "non transsexual".

The term stayed fringe for a while among academics (of the Marxist Postmodernist Belief System) before spreading to the general population. After all, all it takes is for 10 per cent of a pop to fervently believe in something for it to bcome mainstream. The term has of course been added to and subtracted from, with vying tribes surrounding proper usage; just like real life lol

Not all transsexuals et al use the term today.

Okay, I now know someone is gender fluid and *facepalm* forgot to confirm what pronoun they prefer. They are a new member at my UU fellowship (started coming last spring) so I will likely encounter them again.

Pronouns are kinda funny that way. You rarely use them when talking to the person. It's when referring to that person to someone else where you find you need it!

I don't know about the history. Cis and trans has been used in chemistry and biology for quite a while though. Chemistry cis = same side of a double bond. So something like this for 2 molecules, the first being a cis one.

I was was indicating 1995 in a specific instance for an alternative for "non transgendered" which was then "cisgendered".

as well as our directory we also have a board with the photos and names up. It does help.
