Even more specifically, about speaking truth to power.

Did Mohammad cease to be a prophet after he became the power? Muhammad began as an outsider prophet but ended up as the effective ruler of the Arab world before he died, and also saw the beginning of the Arab Empire that eventually stretched from Iran to Spain along the north coast of Africa.

Todays Scripture -----

Luke 13:1-21 (GW)
Jesus Tells People to Turn to God and Change the Way They Think and Act
13 At that time some people reported to Jesus about some Galileans whom Pilate had executed while they were sacrificing animals. 2 Jesus replied to them, “Do you think that this happened to them because they were more sinful than other people from Galilee? 3 No! I can guarantee that they weren’t. But if you don’t turn to God and change the way you think and act, then you, too, will all die. 4 What about those 18 people who died when the tower at Siloam fell on them? Do you think that they were more sinful than other people living in Jerusalem? 5 No! I can guarantee that they weren’t. But if you don’t turn to God and change the way you think and act, then you, too, will all die.”

A Story about a Fruitless Tree
6 Then Jesus used this illustration: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on the tree but didn’t find any. 7 He said to the gardener, ‘For the last three years I’ve come to look for figs on this fig tree but haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up good soil?’

8 “The gardener replied, ‘Sir, let it stand for one more year. I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 Maybe next year it’ll have figs. But if not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Disabled Woman
10 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the day of rest—a holy day. 11 A woman who was possessed by a spirit was there. The spirit had disabled her for 18 years. She was hunched over and couldn’t stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her to come to him and said, “Woman, you are free from your disability.” 13 He placed his hands on her, and she immediately stood up straight and praised God.

14 The synagogue leader was irritated with Jesus for healing on the day of worship. The leader told the crowd, “There are six days when work can be done. So come on one of those days to be healed. Don’t come on the day of rest—a holy day.”

15 The Lord said, “You hypocrites! Don’t each of you free your ox or donkey on the day of rest—a holy day? Don’t you then take it out of its stall to give it some water to drink? 16 Now, here is a descendant of Abraham. Satan has kept her in this condition for 18 years. Isn’t it right to free her on the day of rest—a holy day?”

17 As he said this, everyone who opposed him felt ashamed. But the entire crowd was happy about the miraculous things he was doing.

Stories about a Mustard Seed and Yeast
18 Jesus asked, “What is God’s kingdom like? What can I compare it to? 19 It’s like a mustard seed that someone planted in a garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds nested in its branches.”

20 He asked again, “What can I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It’s like yeast that a woman mixed into a large amount of flour until the yeast worked its way through all the dough.”

We see here Pilate executed some men who were actually sacrificing animals ---so these men died a sudden death and Jesus says do you think that these people died because they sinned more than others -----He says no ----so take heed and prepare yourselves cause you never know when death will come --so turn now to God and change the way you think and act cause if you don't you will not only have a physical death but you will die spiritually as well -----

There are 2 deaths for unbelievers ----we will all die a physical death so it is not that death Jesus speaks of here it is the Spiritual death which separates people from God Forever -----

unsafe posting reverent scripture to this ----
Revelations 21:8 ----
King James Version
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Verses 6-8 ----We see there is a warning above and the parable of the barren fig tree adds to the above warning --the barren fig tree represents Israel and them producing no fruit -----and Jesus is trying His best to awaken them to what they are doing and telling them the fruitless tree should be cut down ---The Jews were chosen to stand in the good soil but they bear not good fruit from being in that good soil ----there is but little time left for the Jews to turn themselves around to believe That Jesus was their Messiah that they had been waiting for -----

Verses 10-17 ----We see Jesus healing a woman of spirit who was playing havoc with her BODY AND SOUL ----the woman came despite her bodily grief and trouble ----she came to hear Jesus speak -----and He cured her of her infirmity and the leader was upset at Jesus and Jesus flat out calls him a hypocrite ----someone being healed on the Sabbath

unsafe says ------It should be noted that this word infirmity in the Greek means -----

Strong's #769: astheneia -----from 772; feebleness (of mind or body); by implication, malady; morally, frailty:--disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness.

Verses 18-21 --We see the parable of the mustard seed and the yeast ----This parable to me is all about the growth and spreading of the Gospel --the mustard sees is the smallest of the seed but grows big -and the leaven spreads out ----The Gospel is preached to a few but grows and spreads to many can change peoples thinking and hearts as it spreads through the people in spite of all the opposition to it ---it will grow and sustain spiritual life which is what the birds represent in it branches----

unsafe says ---God's word is seed and when we speak it we plant it ----and it grows and spreads -----making disciples for Christ ---lighting each heart and mind one by one if open to it

Muhammad was never a prophet even though his followers think he was he was never a prophet a prophet is one who speaks by the power of the Holy Spirit who witnesses to the life death and resurrection of Christ anyone who comes against that it's not speaking by God's spirit and thuss not a prophet

so Isaiah, Jeremiah, et al weren't prophets, because they never saw the life. or death or resurrection of Jesus?

The discussion about who were legitimate prophets might better be done in a new thread. We're still dealing with Luke 13. I always sort of cringe at the healing of the woman, suffering for 18 years; and it brings forth a complaint from the synagogue official, 'But it's the Sabbath! Can't you do this on one of the pother six days? You've messed up the Sabbath!'
And Jesus reminds them that if their ox was in need of help on the Sabbath, they;d consider it OK to help. Why not this woman?
It might be interesting to explore just what the 'Sabbath' meant in the day of Jesus.

Summary: Luke 13: 22 - 35

Jesus is going through one town and village after another, making his way to Jerusalem.

He is asked if only a few will be saved. "Strive to enter through the narrow door," is his response. Many will try to enter and not be able.

Once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, you can bang on it all you want but the owner will say he does not know you.

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God. You yourselves will be thrown out.

Then people will arrive from all over to eat in the kingdom of God. Some of the last will be first and some of the first will be last.

At that very hour, some Pharisees caution Jesus that Herod is after him. But Jesus must continue his work of casting out demons and performing cures. He will finish on the third day and then be on his way to Jerusalem . . . it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.

Jesus laments for Jerusalem. "You will not see me," he says, "until the time comes when you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord."

Reflection: Luke 13: 22 - 35

Time is running out, today's text is telling us. Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem, seemingly aware of what lies ahead.

And time is running out for us, too. What are we to do? Try to enter through the narrow door although many will try and not be successful.

All of the prophets will be present in the kingdom of Heaven with many of us thrown out. Then people will come from east, west, north & south and eat in the kingdom of God.

How is this to be determined? Who will be in and who will be out?

Some WC2 members who have been posting on this thread will have their ideas about this . . . I am expecting to see a few memes with biblical quotes pop up later. :)

The only clue we have been given in Luke 13 is the call to repentance. (v.5)

Today's text assures us that some of the last will be first and some of the first will be last. Is this going to be a random selection, do we think? A god who randomly selects some for the kingdom and some to be thrown out is not exactly appealing, is it?

Maybe the whole point of this story is that the kingdom of God is just that. God's kingdom and God gets to make the decisions. As much as some of us like to think we know the mind and will of God, we really don't.

A puzzling passage to ponder today.

Todays Scripture

Luke 13:22-35 GW

The Narrow Door
22 Then Jesus traveled and taught in one city and village after another on his way to Jerusalem.

23 Someone asked him, “Sir, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He answered, 24 “Try hard to enter through the narrow door. I can guarantee that many will try to enter, but they won’t succeed. 25 After the homeowner gets up and closes the door, it’s too late. You can stand outside, knock at the door, and say, ‘Sir, open the door for us!’ But he will answer you, ‘I don’t know who you are.’ 26 Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will tell you, ‘I don’t know who you are. Get away from me, all you evil people.’ 28 Then you will cry and be in extreme pain. That’s what you’ll do when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets. They’ll be in God’s kingdom, but you’ll be thrown out. 29 People will come from all over the world and will eat in God’s kingdom. 30 Some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”

Jesus Warns Jerusalem
31 At that time some Pharisees told Jesus, “Get out of here, and go somewhere else! Herod wants to kill you.”

32 Jesus said to them, “Tell that fox that I will force demons out of people and heal people today and tomorrow. I will finish my work on the third day. 33 But I must be on my way today, tomorrow, and the next day. It’s not possible for a prophet to die outside Jerusalem.

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets and stone to death those sent to you! How often I wanted to gather your children together the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings! But you were not willing! 35 Your house will be abandoned. I can guarantee that you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

All of these explanations seem to fly in the face of Gods grace and the current thinking that God died for EVERYONES sins on the cross....guess he could have just relied on that "gate" instead of going through all that pain.
So the scripture today seems to suggest more to me than the explanations above.
If the kingdom is within us and outside of us....wouldnt it make sense that we first have to walk through the gate inside of ourselves by first acknowledging the importance of God,s grace in our lives? No atheist would even search for a gate. I dont think God is trying to exclude anyone but rather he is giving us the keys to the kingdom and to seek if we are right with God on the inside in order to expand Gods kingdom from the outside.
Acts 17:24 "so that they should seek the Lord in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though he is not far from each one of us"
Hebrews 11:6 "
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists, and that he rewards those who earnestly seek Him"
I think we are to choose the gate that offers Gods grace rather than choosing the broad gate of destruction and doubting Gods ability to forgive us.

I wonder too if part of the message is about us needing to do more than just 'hanging around the neighbourhood' - that just sitting in church every Sunday, which some think to be pious, is perhaps not sufficient - not living into and sharing the love of Christ.

I wonder too if part of the message is about us needing to do more than just 'hanging around the neighbourhood' - that just sitting in church every Sunday, which some think to be pious, is perhaps not sufficient - not living into and sharing the love of Christ.
I don't think I see that in today's text but Jesus certainly has plenty to say elsewhere about the outwardly pious.

I don't think I see that in today's text but Jesus certainly has plenty to say elsewhere about the outwardly pious.
I read the scripture in The Message (I often look at several versions) - which is where I think I gained that sense - but perhaps I have an inaccurate sense of it.

23-25 A bystander said, “Master, will only a few be saved?”
He said, “Whether few or many is none of your business. Put your mind on your life with God. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires your total attention. A lot of you are going to assume that you’ll sit down to God’s salvation banquet just because you’ve been hanging around the neighborhood all your lives. Well, one day you’re going to be banging on the door, wanting to get in, but you’ll find the door locked and the Master saying, ‘Sorry, you’re not on my guest list.’
26-27 “You’ll protest, ‘But we’ve known you all our lives!’ only to be interrupted with his abrupt, ‘Your kind of knowing can hardly be called knowing. You don’t know the first thing about me.’

I often go to The Message for an interpretation but I didn't look up today's passage when I first posted about it.

Yeah, I see what you are saying. We are definitely called to do more than give lip service to our faith.

I like the Message. We use it as one of the three translations at our weekly lectio divina study. But it has some clear biases woven into it, as evidenced by the modern colloquialisms/idiom they choose to use.

Summary: Luke 14: 1 - 14

1. Jesus is on his way to the house of the leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the Sabbath. Jesus cures a man with dropsy and this time, the Pharisees remain silent

2. Jesus notices how guests choose places of honor at dinner, so he tells a parable.

When you are invited to a wedding, do not sit down in the place of honor, because someone more distinguished than you might have been invited. If this happens, you will be disgraced and given the lowest place.

When you are invited, sit down at the lowest place and your host may say to you, "Friend, move up higher." Then you will be honored in the presence of all at the table. Those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Jesus also says to his host, when you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite those who know you, expecting to be repaid. Instead, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind. You will be blessed and you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

Reflection: Luke 14: 1 - 14

Today's text is a story about both humility and hospitality. It also serves as a lead-in to the parable of the great dinner which we will look at tomorrow.

Interesting that Jesus is so critical of the Pharisees choosing the best places at the table.

Who are the Pharisees of today, I wonder, with their sense of hierarchy and entitlement?

And it seems it is up to the host to decide who is to be honored at the table. This is very consistent with one of the themes from yesterday's reading.

Todays Scripture -----

Luke 14:1-14 (GW)
Jesus Attends a Banquet

14 On a day of rest—a holy day Jesus went to eat at the home of a prominent Pharisee. The guests were watching Jesus very closely.
2 A man whose body was swollen with fluid was there. 3 Jesus reacted by asking the Pharisees and the experts in Moses’ Teachings, “Is it right to heal on the day of rest—a holy day, or not?” 4 But they didn’t say a thing.
So Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away. 5 Jesus asked them, “If your son or your ox falls into a well on a day of rest—a holy day, wouldn’t you pull him out immediately?” 6 They couldn’t argue with him about this.
7 Then Jesus noticed how the guests always chose the places of honor. So he used this illustration when he spoke to them: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding, don’t take the place of honor. Maybe someone more important than you was invited. 9 Then your host would say to you, ‘Give this person your place.’ Embarrassed, you would have to take the place of least honor. 10 So when you’re invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, ‘Friend, move to a more honorable place.’ Then all the other guests will see how you are honored. 11 Those who honor themselves will be humbled, but people who humble themselves will be honored.”
12 Then he told the man who had invited him, “When you invite people for lunch or dinner, don’t invite only your friends, family, other relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they will return the favor. 13 Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the handicapped, the lame, and the blind. 14 Then you will be blessed because they don’t have any way to pay you back. You will be paid back when those who have God’s approval come back to life.”

unsafe says -----We see that Jesus even thought He had some big disputes with the Pharisees He still associated with them and sat with them showing us a godly example of how we should act toward those who dislike us even to the point of wanting us gone -----

We don't have to like what the person believes or acts out because we know there is an enemy loose who has influence over our thought life in this world and by understanding the enemy and how he works in our lives we can overcome the feelings of resentment toward people who are nasty to us -----Jesus is showing us a perfect example here -----

When we finally master this it is So Freeing in our lives we are no longer in bondage to what people say or think about us ---and we no longer need to say things to please people to be liked ----These shackles are broken ----This is a very Powerful Freedom as the stress and burden is relieved ----

We see Jesus was under great Pressure with the eyes of the Pharisees on Him at all times ------there was a man who had a body swollen with fluid ---and so He poses a Question to the Pharisees who were experts in the Law about healing on the Sabbath but they don't answer so Jesus heals the man and they can't come back at Jesus cause they had their chance to have their say and refused to comment cause there was no law about healing on the Sabbath ----

We see in Verses 5and 6 Jesus telling them why He can heal on the Sabbath and they have no argument

unsafe says ------This is Interesting here because if you really look at it Jesus rebukes their wrong attitude and bad temper by calling on them to look inside of themselves and to be true to the truth -----about healing on the Sabbath

Verses 7-14 -----are about Pride and Humility ------He uses a Parable about a Wedding Feast -----Jesus uses Parables to bring God's truth to light to those who are open to His truth -----

Jesus noticed the Pharisees placing themselves in the best places ----By taking a place of honor by our won judgment we could bring shame to our selves if we are ask to move to another lower spot -----by first sitting in a lower position we may be summoned to mover to the Higher spot -----

There are many today who like the Pharisees think of themselves as having a high opinion of themselves and they feel that because of how good they are to others and live a good life that receiving Jesus in their hearts is not necessary to have eternal life -----they will have a seat front and center in Heaven because of their goodness ----and like the ones at the Wedding Feast when they actually get to go before God and are told they can't enter because of their pride and self importance ---they will be shamed and gravely disappointed -----

We are to take the Lower Place and allow God to move us to the higher ----

Verses ---10 So when you’re invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, ‘Friend, move to a more honorable place.’ Then all the other guests will see how you are honored. 11 Those who honor themselves will be humbled, but people who humble themselves will be honored.”

Verses 12-14 ----When we invite people to have a meal we should not invite people who can them invite us to their Banquets we are to invite the poor etc who can't pay back the favour -----only then are you serving out of Love for God not man ----All Serving done should be done because of our Love for God and this gives God the Glory ---when we serve from our own self we Self Serving and that is not being a True Servant of God -----
