Be careful not to become misers of what you hear . . . what an interesting interpretation!

I suspect this short text is interpreted in a variety of ways. Is it miserly to insist our own interpretation is the right one or the best one?

Anyone remember this song? I know I sung it in church years ago and I think it might have been in the green hymn book (Songs for a Gospel People). I also heard it once a a folk festival.

1. Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
Give me oil in my lamp, I pray
Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
Keep me burning till the break of day
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Sing hosanna to the Servant King
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Sing hosanna, let us sing

2. Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising
Give me joy in my heart, I pray
Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising
Keep me praising till the break of day
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Sing hosanna to the Servant King
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Sing hosanna, let us sing

3. Give me peace in my heart, keep me loving
Give me peace in my heart, I pray
Give me peace in my heart, keep me loving
Keep me loving till the break of day
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna
Sing hosanna…

Thoughts on Luke 8:16-18...

Missionaries must hide neither their own godliness nor Gospel-preaching. There's a responsibility upon missionaries. For there's nothing hidden which won't be revealed.

Mission's a treasure that should be guarded lest it be taken away; but incidentally, missionaries uncover this treasure at every chance and let others share in the riches of God's grace and mercy in Jesus.

From this arises the missionaries' duty to know the Gospel, salvation's treasure. To the one that has missional knowledge God adds thereto, with interest reckoned.

If one's careless about their growth in missional knowledge, then even that little which they think they have will be taken from them.

Whenever I hear this saying of Jesus, I remember the Sunday school/vbs song: this Little light of mine, with actions.I remember singing loudly, and no doubt in a monotone because I'm tone deaf, full of enthusiasm and determined that the light of Christ which shine through me for everyone to see. oh for the enthusiasm of youth ...

Oh, yes! I remember that one.

There was also, "Jesus let us shine, with a pure clear light . . . "

I can remember all 3 of those from early years. It seems letting the light shine was an important idea (and still is, for that matter).

One thing that dawns on me is that, once lit, the light takes on a life of its own-- it will reveal and bring things to light. Nothing remains hidden. Usually we think we can control a light by blowing out a candle, or flipping a switch to the 'off' position. This light will not yield to such controls as we might wish.

Actually it is "Jesus bids us shine . . . " VU 585

I don't think I have ever sung this one in church as an adult. It is in my memory bank from way back.

It's important to feed the flame, lest it be snuffed out. ;)

Another great tune is, "Shine Jesus Shine."
There are plenty of metaphors and hymns about Jesus being the light.

I was about to say today's text is talking about something different than this. However, as I think about it, perhaps the light refers to the indwelling Spirit of God.

Lots to ponder in this very short text.

Whatever light we have comes from Jesus. He is truly the Light.

I have trouble separating God into three parts. To me there is only one God, whether it is God made manifest in Jesus who lived among us, or God is in the spirit that surrounds us and lives within us, or God the Creator God of the universe. One God. It is the light of God that shone through Jesus. It is the light of God that shines on us and through us.

Do you believe that there are three unique persons in the Triune Godhead, each of whom is God?

do you have trouble separating your body, soul & spirit?

to me, all 3 areas of your being make up who you are that which goes by the name Seeler

Luke 8:16-18

Jesus is the light of the world if Jesus Lives in you, let His Light Shine through, don't hide it, cuz like Light its shines gracefully for all who come into the light to be lite by it regardless of who they are and not know the far reaches of it.

Don't know about her, but I don't really separate those, at least not literally. They interact so closely (Remember that I tend to be of the "soul and spirit = metaphor for personality and motivation" camp. I don't believe in a supernatural "soul") that you can't separate them. Even if you define them as different aspects of the person, they are still highly interdependent.

exactly, which was my point, you can't separate them, there are part of who we are , take one away and were toast

Right, so you're essentially saying that the Trinity are God's Body, Soul, Spirit? I've largely taken the tack that it's all God and the "Trinity" are more about how we see God in action (Creator, Redeemer, Energizer). But I'm Unitarian so that fits my worldview.

If one wants to limit God to only those 3 aspects of God...go for it, personally I believe there must be more.

Im saying that we are made in the likeness or image of the Creator, we are Not the Creator But, we are a reflection of who God is
