The good Samaritan story is certainly one that supports a radically inclusive view of Jesus.

Interesting that so many texts support just the opposite view, even in the same section of Luke's gospel.

Maybe I will pull out my copy of The Five Gospels later and see what the scholars have to say about the authentic words of Jesus here.

The Five Gospels suggests that the words of Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan are authentic. The authors seem to think the context for the story might be a creation by the writer of Luke's gospel.

While this is interesting to read about, I don't think it changes up my understanding of the story at all.

Todays scripture

Luke 10 :21-37 GW

21 In that hour the Holy Spirit filled Jesus with joy. Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from wise and intelligent people and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.

22 “My Father has turned everything over to me. Only the Father knows who the Son is. And no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.”

23 He turned to his disciples in private and said to them, “How blessed you are to see what you’ve seen. 24 I can guarantee that many prophets and kings wanted to see and hear what you’ve seen and heard, but they didn’t.”

A Story about a Good Samaritan
25 Then an expert in Moses’ Teachings stood up to test Jesus. He asked, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 Jesus answered him, “What is written in Moses’ Teachings? What do you read there?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as you love yourself.’”

28 Jesus told him, “You’re right! Do this, and life will be yours.”

29 But the man wanted to justify his question. So he asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”

30 Jesus replied, “A man went from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way robbers stripped him, beat him, and left him for dead.

31 “By chance, a priest was traveling along that road. When he saw the man, he went around him and continued on his way. 32 Then a Levite came to that place. When he saw the man, he, too, went around him and continued on his way.

33 “But a Samaritan, as he was traveling along, came across the man. When the Samaritan saw him, he felt sorry for the man, 34 went to him, and cleaned and bandaged his wounds. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day the Samaritan took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. He told the innkeeper, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than that, I’ll pay you on my return trip.’

36 “Of these three men, who do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by robbers?”

37 The expert said, “The one who was kind enough to help him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and imitate his example!”

unsafe says -----We see in verse 21 an important message here -----

21 In that hour the Holy Spirit filled Jesus with joy. Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from wise and intelligent people and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.

unsafe says -----Here we see that Spiritual is Hid from the people who think they are wise and intelligent in their own eyes that is--- unbelievers -those who respect the things of this world ---and is revealed to them that are believers--- that is those who listen to--believe and obey the word -----

This is the same today -----The Natural Man cannot receive the spiritual meaning of the word ----to them it is foolish according to scripture -----

verses 23-24 tells us ---23 He turned to his disciples in private and said to them, “How blessed you are to see what you’ve seen. 24 I can guarantee that many prophets and kings wanted to see and hear what you’ve seen and heard, but they didn’t.”

unsafe says -----the 72 were successful in their endeavor and Jesus is saying that all power in their victory cames from Him not themselves and there are many who believe they have the power to do as you did but without me they see nothing ----

The Parable of the Good Samaritan ----

The young Lawyer asks the question of how to have eternal life ------We see the Lawyer knew the answer ---Love God first ----then love your neighbour ---but he didn't know who his neighbour was so Jesus tells him a Parable ----

This parable shows us that the ones who knew they should help their neighbour walked by and left the man to die in the street ----and a stranger comes by and takes care of the man and even pays to have him lodged and looked after --The Samaritan's were despised by the Jews and would have nothing to do with these people ----This shows us just how selfish we can be and how many excuses we will and can make to avoid the trouble of helping others in nay way needed ----Financially or otherwise -----

The Samaritan who was considered an enemy by the Jews showed True Agape Love to His Neighbour while the people who called themselves Godly walked on by and left the man for dead -------

Jesus showed us what real Agape Love is all about -----He paid our debt in full for what we deserve so Jesus is our Good Samaritan ----and we should be on our knees every day thanking Him for taking on all our burdens in this life -and giving us a second chance at having eternal life instead of eternal death ------

Jesus tells the Lawyer to go and imitate the Good Samaritan -----and that is what True Believers are to do today go and mature in their character and thinking by being Committed to staying in God's word and obeying it and understanding it by and through the Holy Spirit ----

Great lesson here today in this scripture -----

Summary: Luke 10: 38 - 42

As they go on their way, Jesus enters a certain village where Martha welcomes Him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sits at His feet and listens. Martha is distracted by her many tasks and complains to Jesus that Mary has left her to do all the work.

Jesus answers, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part which will not be taken away from her."

Reflection: Luke 10: 38 - 42

This is a curious little story which only appears in Luke. It has always appealed to me and it has always puzzled me.

What were the tasks that distracted Martha, I wonder? What was she worried about? Sometimes she is assumed to be preparing dinner for Jesus because the hospitality of the day would likely have included offering a meal. She seems to be saying she has a lot of work to do.

If this is the case, how exactly did Jesus expect the meal to appear?

Or is Martha busy with tasks which really are not very important? What are the things which distract us nowadays? How many things concern our congregations that are just busywork?

Listening to Jesus is identified here as "the better part".

In a sermon I heard many years ago, it was suggested that we all have a Martha and a Mary inside of us.

Well if I put this story in todays context Jesus wouldnt be so glamorized for dismissing Martha and favouring the one sitting at his feet in adorarion. And of course we would probably ask Mary for help instead of going through Jesus
Maybe we're supposed to run every decision through Gods filter first?
Who knows.....it is an odd story.

It is an odd one. Today we would expect Martha and Mary to work together on the preparations and for both of them to spend time listening to Jesus, wouldn't we?

Maybe it is a story illustrating material vs spiritual values. Or maybe works vs faith.

I really wish Luke had told us what Martha was up to. He leaves us speculating about her activities and how important they were.

Jesus had a way of taking hospitality for granted for himself and his disciples, I think. Maybe being a man he just didn't realize how much work goes into having guests in one's home & feeding them. :)

Reflecting a little further on this . . .

Here we see Mary sitting at Jesus' feet and listening. Just listening.

Jesus has attracted multitudes of people as he journeyed, with the crowds clamoring for healing. And now Mary is simply listening. I have been contemplating how powerful it is to have someone truly listen to us and make us feel "heard".

Authentic listening is an amazing gift and perhaps Mary was demonstrating this gift while Martha rushed around.

It wouldn't get the dinner cooked, however.

And after that Samaritan story shouldnt he have jumped up to help? Lol!

MOre than one (often male i suspect) preacher has gotten in trouble by being overly praiseful of Mary in this story. While it is true that "they also serve who only stand and wait" (Milton) it is equally true that many people serve, and sometimes even listen and learn, better by being active and 'doing'. MArtha gets a bum rap in the story because we focus on Mary having done the "better part".

I spoke on this passage at a UCW gathering many years ago. ANd I remember pointing out that in the UCW model both the MAry and the MArtha sides are taken care of. UCW's do a lot of work, but they UCW model also encourages units to take time listening and studying.

AS it happens I was having tea with one UCW unit just this week and they were talking about history, things they had done over the years. In that unit are members who remember before there was UCW, when there was the Women's Missionary SOciety (WMS) and the Women's Auxiliary (WA) that were merged to form the UCW in 1962. One member said she was part of the WMS but not the WA., because the WA were the kitchen people and she was more interested in the studying (which was a great simplification of the difference between teh WA and WMS.

THE church needs both Mary and MArtha. And we can not safely say that one path is in fact better than the other.

It could be that some of us would benefit by being a little more "Martha" and some of us by being a little more "Mary".

Jesus was clearly praising Mary for her attentiveness and chiding Martha for her worry and distraction.

Still wondering how this man expected dinner to get cooked.

Luke 10: 38 - 42

martha was more concerned with the things of the house rather than the Lord is present, Mary was concerned more that the Lord was present rather than the things of the house.

And maybe the message is there? In other passages, he talks about how limited his followers' time with him will be. Could it be he wasn't deriding Martha's work so much as the fact that it was cutting into that limited time?

Jesus was not deriding Marth's work but her 1st concern, the house.

if you were in the Lord's presence would your concern be for something else other than God?

PS: I nicknamed my mother in law, Martha, cuz when people come over, shes more concerned how well the home looks rather than enjoying the presence of the company because in her mind, the particulars of the house are going to reflect her, then people are going to talk

off topic, shes the site got upgraded, why does it flash when im typing?

Not sure. What device are you using? Web browser? I use Chrome on both a Samsung Android phone and various Windows PCs and haven't seen that yet.

Todays Scripture ----

Luke 10:38-42 GW

Mary Listens to Jesus
38 As they were traveling along, Jesus went into a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to him talk.

40 But Martha was upset about all the work she had to do. So she asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work all by myself? Tell her to help me.”

41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha! You worry and fuss about a lot of things. 42 There’s only one thing you need.[a] Mary has made the right choice, and that one thing will not be taken away from her.”

unsafe says -----This scripture is so important and gives us a lot of insight into the Spiritual Side of what is important to focus on and what isn't ------

This piece of Scripture is focusing on our Spiritual priorities -----what we see as more important ----worldly duties that we can say --Look what I did I made the Meal and worked hard while my sister did nothing but sat on her fanny -----Pride and ego at work here in one ----- also we see anger --selfishness and resentment creeps in and not only is it directed toward her Sister it has now spread to Jesus as well -----Martha has allowed her emotions to rule her instead of her taking control over her emotions -----

verse 40 ----40 But Martha was upset about all the work she had to do. So she asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work all by myself? Tell her to help me.”

Satan has crept into Martha's thoughts and is having a hay day with her -----and we see her reaction ----she has no restraints in controlling her selfishness and it gets the best of her -----She is thinking worldly and not understanding the Spiritual side of what her Sister is doing ------Satan has Blinded her Mind to the real issue at hand -----she is wailing in self pity and that stirs up her emotions and then she speaks what is in her heart -----

Scripture says where your treasure is there also will be your heart ----Martha's treasure was in her food not in eternal life ----

unsafe says ----
This is for us today ---this is showing us people who are unbelievers and can't grasp the Spiritual meaning of what the scripture is saying ---they can't see the forest for the trees in front of them so to speak ----

unsafe says ----Here we see Jesus telling her FLAT OUT ----What He Thinks -----

41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha! You worry and fuss about a lot of things. 42 There’s only one thing you need.[a] Mary has made the right choice, and that one thing will not be taken away from her.”

unsafe says ------There is only one thing we all need -----Jesus is the one thing -----as receiving Jesus is receiving our Salvation ---our only hope for Eternal life -----Receiving Jesus gives us all that comes with being co- heirs ------

unsafe posting here from Got Questions ----read all if interested --just posting this one section ----

In Romans 8:17 Paul says, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” According to this verse, we share in the sufferings of Christ now and will share in the glory of Christ later as His “co-heirs” or “joint-heirs.”

unsafe says ---This is what Mary did -----she got here Priorities straight and knew what was more important ----She was spiritually Grounded where Martha was Worldly Grounded ------nothing new here ---many are worldly grounded and some are Spiritually Grounded -----it is a choice we make ourselves ------

Image result for Jesus is the way --the truth and the life

We either believe this or we don't ------there is no inbetween -----

paradox3 ----your quote -----Still wondering how this man expected dinner to get cooked

unsafe says ----if Jesus can get a coin out of a fishes mouth ---He could have put dinner on the table for them ---Martha got caught up in the wrong Realm ------Mary Got it ---Martha failed to get it -----
