A thread about sin and separation from God might be a good idea.

Can't say I have ever understood the concept of being separated from God

I don’t think we can expect that Jesus would’ve had British colonial ideas about good manners. If someone’s saving me from potentially drowning I ultimately don’t care if they’re not being polite to me. “Get in the lifeboat now you insufferable twit!” …would probably work on me. And I imagine I’m not alone. Then again…I don’t take well to rude doctors even if they know what they’re doing - so I’m a hypocrite aren’t I?

Good morning everyone. We have a puzzler today. Here is Luke 6: 35-36
Do you think these verses support a universalist view of salvation or do you think just the opposite?

According to Jesus, we are to expect nothing in return for ethical behavior. Yet our reward will be great. What's up with that?

Being known as the children of the Most High sounds like something wonderful. But why does Jesus remind us here that God is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked?

We are called to be merciful just as God is merciful. It seems correct to respond to God's mercy by being merciful to others.

What do you make of this reading?

Natural is all about action and reaction and the consequences thereof ... if you believe there are no consequences for what you do you must be out of it ... Eeyore in head space ... kind 'a out there beyond natural and thus natural hyped as super disturbed? Such is rank anarchy, no matter which field you observe it from in not medium and well mediated ... and a field was once known as a Wahl to those residing in cover ... gorse? These blossoms go around ... bloomers? Bagged Pans ... sacked ... like Rome ... outsides, fringe v/gothe, etc. Transverses ...

There is an old adage about interest ... and when interest is missing ... is the curious thing gone missing? Is the sol, mind, psyche such a departed item in a world of anarchy ... chaos and Din ... the anarchists' with the strongest head may be like Molly in an ancient image done by Botticelli ... on the Eve of God and Adam 'slight ...

It may be just a story fr those outside the canon and bull ... those powers (head) consider the small stuff just crap ... yet imagine the displaced errs .. Aye?

Mores to leer into ... vast spreads ... like Rhodes ... and thus wegoes ... some say wrinkles ... "what" comes 4th? Ah qui ... or yuccas? Yuk-yuks ... and the L' ukes!

Laid ai luck ... to encounter the objective ... unheard ove'?

I think you are misreading me, Jim. In my relationship with my husband I don't do anything to receive praise or additional rewards. I think he would say the same.

But we support each other and there is nothing wrong with being grateful that we are in each other's lives.

Nothing wrong with appreciation for the effort put into preparing dinner either.

I agree that Jesus is calling us out of these comfort zones.

Mother Teresa said something about peace in the world beginning with peace at our dinner tables. I will see if I can find it.
I do not think I am misreading you. Jesus was focusing on actions that deserve recognition while referring to people who do ordinary good expecting praise for just doing what they are supposed to do. He states in another place that, if you are a servant who has been working in the fields and then comes in at meal time. The servant is expected to prepare the meal, not have the master serve them. It is about misplaced expectations for praise. He is not putting down all the good things he lists, just the expectations of praise for doing them.

Being unmerciful as opposed to being merciful would probably change us, and not in a good way. Perhaps Jesus is showing us how to work on our character by not drawing attention to ourselves but we learn it's the right thing to do? No reward but we become closer to God.

If on the peak ... one has to serve none ... Cloe's to NU thin ... when on the bottom expect herculean baggage!

Spot for the gravid point ... in some folk myth ... vast lore ... way down there! Science is expressed this way because of all those that don't wish to observe nature in passions of cult Vachon the cake without eating it --- Mariah An tonette down ... all part of the desire to divine and separate for conquering the stunned ... do the lower places of home halve Dumbledore's?

This is the scripture you are referencing, right? Where does it even say anything about praise?

Or do you think credit means praise? I was thinking the meaning was closer to "How is that a good deed?"

At any rate, I also think that recognition and praise are different

Jesus felt the need to receive John's baptism of repentance.
Just to clarify -------not because Jesus needed repentance of sin as He was sinless ----His purpose for being Baptised was to fulfill all righteousness -----it is the fulfilling the Baptism of the Holy Spirit -----

Matthew 3 AMP

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan [River], to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him [vigorously protesting], saying, “It is I who need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”

15 But Jesus replied to him, “Permit it just now; for this is the fitting way for us [a]to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John permitted [it and baptized] Him.

By baptizing Him, John was declaring to all that here was the One they had been waiting for, the Son of God, the One he had predicted would baptize “with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11).

Do you think these verses support a universalist view of salvation or do you think just the opposite?
No definitely not -----Salvation comes by one way only in Scripture by Grace through faith ----Loving your enemy can only come through Agape ---which is a Fruit of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit ----Agape is unconditional and knows no bounds -----Agape Loves the unlovely

We are to Agape all people no matter what they do or say to us or about us ---we don't have to like their action or words but we are to Love the person -----

God Agapes His Human Creation with all our flaws ---mocking ---and persecution of Him ----

@unsafe
How do you interpret God's kindness to the ungrateful and the wicked?
You need to understand that there is Common Grace that God provides ---Common Grace is given to all God's Creation ----Common Grace is different from Saving Grace which is Given to thoses to Receive God's free Graced Gift of Salvation which comes through Faith in what Jesus accomplished on the Cross ------

Greek word for Grace is
charis
grace
good will, loving-kindness, favour

I say -----God demonstrate His Common Grace here ---

Matthew 5:45

He makes His sun rise on those who are evil and on those who are good, and makes the rain fall on the righteous [those who are morally upright] and the unrighteous [the unrepentant, those who oppose Him]

I say ---It is God's common Grace that all of us get to open our eyes in the morning Good and evil people -----God allows the Righteous and Unrighteous to have wealth----by His Common Grace ----

This was the passage. You can replace praise by credit. Good deeds usually carry the sense of self-giving with the emphasis on giving. Everything listed is an exchange, not a gift.

I do not believe the passage is about salvation. To me it is about living in the spirit of the realm of heaven, of doing good to others because they need it regardless of relationship with us. It was shown by the wife of a New Brunswick Highway Patrol Officer who was murdered and she did not want the murderer executed.

Well I disagree but that's fine. I might not be explaining myself properly. Apparently the author of The Message sees it as you do. He mentions pats on the back and expecting a medal.

Oh I don't think it's about salvation either. I just wondered if it might be consistent with a universalist point of view.
