Do retired people even notice a one-day holiday like Family Day that doesn't come with any traditions? Seems to me it would just kind of be another day unless family came to visit or something. Guess I'll find out in a few years.
Who says there are no traditions?

It was just another day for me. I went to knit with new friends and did some summer planning.

Not the holiday, so much, as the reaching out. One son, who is in Oz, and wasn't prompted, said nothing, not a holiday for him, another son called (same holiday in BC), daughter and I spoke about holiday two days ago.

Good morning! Lots to talk about round the Cart. Holidays, changes in religious organizations, family members' health, and, of course, weather. The Coffee Cart stands ready, with fresh brewed coffee, and hot water fi tea. Come on in and join the conversation!

It was just another day in this household. Minor annoyance to someone who wanted to use a bank and the library. It was just us all day. No visitors or phone calls.

It's only been a holiday in Ontario for less than a decade and is not tied to any pre-existed festivities so pretty much by definition, there's no traditions.

I don't know anyone who has traditions. Many I know did do family activities and that may become traditions.

I was reading it was started in Saskatchewan to honour the pioneers that settled there, the other provinces hearing this adopted the day for no other reason but to break up the long stretch between Christmas and Easter.
Another theory that may or may not be true.

According to Wiki, Alberta was first. They introduced Family Day in 1990. Saskatchewan followed, also with Family Day, introducing the legislation in 2005 with the holiday starting in 2007. Ontario was shortly after that. Some other provinces have other days that they have proclaimed (e.g. Riel Day in Manitoba) but nothing that matches what you describe here.

Probably wont be able to find it now after clearing my history.

Premier Don Getty was the one who proclaimed it for Alberta. I thought it was earlier than that. It was a response to an Alberts population that was starting to sour on the Conservatives.

Over 30 years here. As kids, we had traditions with it. Chemguy and I it varies quite a bit now, depends a bit on what's good timing for my sister's birthday as the 2 are fairly close together.
I find it often doesn't take too long for traditions to get going. This past year a newcomer posted to get up to date for Christmas traditions including Elf on a Shelf. That was slightly jarring to me but it does make sense, to many kids now Elf on a Shelf is just as traditional as Santa. Started in about 2005.

Good morning! Quite a discussion about Family Day and its history, and traditions people have or don't have. I can hardly wait till August, when we remember those cherished Civic Holiday traditions. Anyway, the Coffee Cart is up and running, so help yourself to a cup, or mug, and join the conversation. All is ready.

Just tending the fire here today in anticipation ... pretending to be Daniel in the boiler room ... stokers in 'ell?

Said to be contained in the myth of psyche ... do not overfeed it or you suffer the abstract ...

Is there something deep in the legends that might bring light to those obscured by flaming powers????

Could this be labelled as occult as not presently seen in the alternate presentations of angels as Gabriel perhaps sneaking by as daffy dus ... generally unseen! The word ... appearing as God must be investigated as alien to mortal limitations ... accept the word as far more extensive than first assumed as primal assumption ... it goes on from there ... reliving us in relief ... pathae logical exuberance ... getting beyond the odd self! It starts as very anonymous ... isolated as the old word mana*eim ... that's something else ... like matter out there close to a big inning ...

Imagine stepping up to bat and getting clobbered ... like the indications of the distant Skye ... an essence ... even N. Tyson is baffled by de Grasse stains ... vertex hades! Ghastly spectra ... ghostly words?

Is there a domain for this?? To a degree ... giddy biddy wanderers ...

I think that holiday is actually old enough that a lot do have traditions. Family BBQ's, long weekend parties at the cottage or camping, that sort of thing.

Good morning. I am not fond of snow, but I'll take it over ice as I got reminded yesterday. Took me ten or fifteen minutes to clean the damn car off and then it was ice pellets and freezing rain all the way home. Police are still asking people to stay off the roads if they can this morning and all schools are closed. Needless to say, I took them up on that suggestion.
