Oh that tech incompatibility thing - nightmare! I did a recent workshop & at the last minute before leaving home I did a backup of my PPT slides to a thumb drive - you know, 'just in case'. Well - good thing I did! My little newer laptop didn't marry up with their older projector - but the tech guy had a computer that did & so popped in the thumb drive ... all was well!! Phew. A little prayer of thanks was said! Good for y'all jimkenny12 for the joyful accapella singing!A new worship leader today, Jessica, was unable to get her laptop to work with the church's AV system so we sang accapella. Her message about the importance of finding Joy in what we have and who we are was very good.
Yeah, New Year's, or the Sunday between it and Christmas in most years, is usually a "low Sunday" even in UU churches. At the UU fellowship, we eventually moved to doing a small format service similar to a summer service for that weekend. Chairs in a circle instead of rows, with the leader, Chalice, etc. in the middle of the circle. More interactive, too, with group readings and sometimes a bit of discussion rather than a sermon/homily.Due to the weather, our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services were cancelled this year. However, our minister put together a 'storm version' for Facebook Live. It was very much appreciated by many people. I am doing the New Year's Day service, and I expect a near-empty sanctuary for it.
Volunteer burnout is a very real issue.Still very small numbers at church. And we had a baptism today...one of those families we only see when they have kids to baptize. But we smile and make our promises. I think I need a break from church because I'm getting cynical and feeling a little taken advantage of as volunteer secretary. I'm sure this is just a phase....
Sabbaticals, regardless of how long they are, are important for fruitful faith lives. They provide time to look at what we do, the outcomes that seem to result, and our goals for our faith lives. When we take a break from doing a service that affects others, it provides them with the opportunity to notice the difference you make and to be open to discussing what you do and why. If you decide to return to that role, you will be able to say something like, "This is what I need if I am going to take up this role again."Still very small numbers at church. The beginning of a new year is a good time to take a time out. I wish you well with whatever you decide.
Church of a different kind! When we arrived at church yesterday, people were leaving. There was no heat because the fuel oil tank was empty. It had been filled on December 8 and the cover was broken off indicating someone stole oil from the tank. So we met at McDonald's and had good conversations.
Church of a different kind!
A local C of E clergyman used to welcome questions and conversations at a local pub many years ago. It helped him to get to know some of the college students and young working people in the area.Church of a different kind!
