Good morning. We're starting the day in a leisurely manner. I've been bending my knee further and trying to get it closer to heal. That seems to be working reasonably well. Last night though, it was aching like a buggar when I got to bed. Advil settled it down and it's okay today. Maybe higher levels of ache are part of the healing. Here's hoping.

Today is our last day here. We will be spending a few days with a Presbytery knitting buddy at the lake starting tomorrow. I'm looking forward to the visit. I'm getting tired of the inappropriate use of the Canadian flag in this town. :(

Fifth dose? Is this going to become a thing?
2nd boosters? Yes. They opened it for all of AB adults this week. Technically I should have waited ~2 weeks. This timing works out better though, including protection with unvaccinated relatives visiting *sigh*.

The languaging of all this is confusing. "Second booster" is often (usually?) the fourth shot. I use "shot" because there is a mixture of full and half doses involved too. Totally confusing.

Ontario is rolling out fourth doses now. It has just opened up for everyone over 18 yrs of age and 5 months post third shot.

60 year olds were eligible earlier so Mr Paradox and I already have ours.

The messaging is confusing though. While opening up the eligibility they have also told us the fourth dose is unnecessary for many people.

I have yet to hear anything about fifth doses. Maybe health care workers can get one but IDK

Usually it is, for people like you and me it's 5th though.

I found it interesting, got it done at my usual pharmacy this time (instead of the one where I got all the other vaccines). She has been busier with 2nd boosters than she was with the boosters this winter.

When some people need 3 doses instead of just 2 for the primary series it seems very odd to me to not offer them boosters the same as everyone else.

I looked at BC's site, they said they are currently sending out invitations for 2nd boosters for people who are immunocompromised, elderly, etc. Everyone 12+ can get a 'fall booster'.

I've heard that too. There's also the messaging about the vaccines that address the latest variants. Likely one and the same for the 'boosters' . It adds to the confusion.

I'm the same. In the past, health cafe workers and clinically vulnerable people were mentioned.

Add to that the fact that each province has different messaging and language. It would be nice to have a more consistent message across the country

To me calling it a 2nd booster is different from fifth dose even though it can essentially be the same thing.

I'll be talking to my specialist and GP specialist next month. I'll see what they have to say.

The bivalent vaccine (better for current variants) isn't expected until Nov/Dec so that's starting to move into winter. At this point no one really knows if the timing of the last booster of currently available vaccines will affect when eligible for the new one. Ie. If someone waits until Sept or Oct to get this round of booster, can they get the new one in Dec or do they have to wait longer?

Why? I am using the language that matches with AB information. I had 3 primary series and then 2 boosters, 5 doses total.
Chemguy had 2 primary series and 2 boosters, 4 doses total.

This is the language I am following (from AHS)

Individuals with certain immunocompromising conditions should receive a 3-dose primary series, followed by all of the booster doses they are eligible for. This is to provide stronger protection because their immune systems respond differently to vaccines than other people without these conditions.

Fifth dose (second booster) for immunocompromised 18+ (starting July 20)

  • Eligibility: Albertans 18 and older with eligible immunocompromising conditions.
  • When to book: Must wait at least 5 months after fourth dose

I just pushed it up a bit which I do not feel bad about, as it works better with some treatment changes, plus the visitors. Even completely healthy people can get up to 5 for travelling and in fairly short time frames.
It was a rather sudden decision on my part to go ahead early, but with the current variant being more contagious than measles it is feeling very inevitable I will get it and while I won't do high risk things with the visitors low-moderate risk gatherings were feeling very uncomfortable with hitting that 5 month mark while they are here.

I'm not current on AB information. Right now my news/information is coming in bits. I have only heard "second booster" in the information I'm getting.

This may be a confirmation of my comment that languaging is different across Canada.

I'm confused because I'm confused.

I agree, the different criteria across the country is confusing. I don't think all provinces decided that some people needed 3 doses as a primary series, although NACI did phrase it that way, plus it makes sense. The decision on that 3rd dose wasn't to deal with immunity that decreased with time, it was to get people who are immunocompromised to a similar level of antibodies (and hopefully general protection) as those who are not immunocompromised. So I think it's easier after that to refer to 1st, 2nd, etc. boosters, especially factoring in the different vaccines. Complete the primary series, whatever that is for someone based on their medical history, age, and specific vaccine and then from there provide boosters. It's comparable to how we deal with other vaccines.

This is BC's language:

Third doses and booster doses have different purposes.

A third dose is for people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems. People who are immunocompromised will generally have lower antibody responses (less protection) from two COVID-19 vaccine doses. Studies show that giving a third dose to complete the primary vaccine series can help these people make antibodies to protect them from COVID-19.

A booster dose is an additional dose of vaccine that helps you maintain and lengthen your protection against severe outcomes of COVID-19 as immunity (protection) decreases over time. It is given after completion of a primary series (a primary series is an initial series of vaccinations designed to give you protection against a disease).

@Northwind hope that helps you over there.

I'm aware that my primary series is three shots. It absolutely makes sense that second booster means five. I get that. The message is still confusing.

Better today, but still definitely ill. Still, better than yesterday is a sign of progress in my body's war against the little blighters.

We are getting an extended dose of summer this week. 30ish degrees every day. Actually not too humid today after being kind of muggy the last couple days.

The family get-together that I was going to skip due to COVID has been rescheduled ... to a weekend when we are supposed to be at the cottage. Oh well, there's always Christmas, eh.
