Novel Coronavirus

I am disappointed, but not surprised, that South Africa is being punished for doing such a good job of testing the genetics of Covid cases and reporting it. It seems likely Omicron started in Central West Africa from the reporting being done and that it is likely widely spread already.
I agree. I understand travel restrictions as it slows the spread. If it were just in one country I also understand really restricting travel to do so safely.
There was already a case in someone at a large convention in New York though.
Restricting frivolous travel and implementing good testing standards makes sense. Preventing people coming home from Southern Africa doesn't.

I thought they backed off, although I could be wrong.
They only backed off a bit- whoever had his first vaccination by the deadline had 90 more days to get the second. These are the numbers for the unvaccinated. I heard from people that some went to work “ just to see what happens”. Well, something happened.

Asked about reports of poor conditions in federal quarantine facilities, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Monday the requirement is "a necessary and fair trade-off."

"We're not going to spare any expense or resources when it comes to protecting Canadians, including at the border. We're going to continue to provide clear travel guidance to all Canadians and others who are travelling to Canada," he told reporters in Ottawa.

I just don't understand why this is an issue at this point. Considering food delivery services and grocery delivery, we should let people get the food they want. I'm sure people know where these hotels are, keeping the secret doesn't make sense for security. Sure, don't let the delivery people take things up to the rooms, but people working in them should be doing what they can to help them out, including delivering packages.

I also think if people have really clear plans ankle monitoring is still something that should be considered.

And while this is going on we have had someone with Omicron in a prison in ON, household contacts in at least 2 schools in AB, etc.

The federal government also surely could have stepped in with better contact tracing. They go to some extremes for certain instances and then just turn a blind eye to multiple other issues.

How many Omicron variants are in the other provinces? I had looked at info that had them all listed, but it was out of date quickly. AB is up to 19.
Considering the extra steps taken because of Omicron, it suggests to me we have a number of cases coming in via travel that probably aren't being discovered until passed to others.

My region alone has over 50 confirmed or suspected (due to contacts) Omicron cases. Problem is an outbreak caused by travellers that spread through a church and some schools.

Yea

Yeah, it doesn't match what I have seen for ON overall. I wish we had better reporting. At this point I don't think Omicron has much meaning in terms of what response is needed, but it does have meaning with tracing things back to travel which has vslue.

German news today- seven Germans, all tripple vaxxed got Omicron while in South Africa. Mild cases.
That's what we are seeing here. None of the cases with Omicron in that outbreak here have been hospitalized so far, or at least not as the health officer's report last night.

I see pro sports is starting to have problems again. In my Twitter feed today we had NBA (Chicago Bulls) and NHL (Calgary Flames) teams sidelined due to outbreaks.

The UK has seen its first death from the Omicrom variant. They're doubling down on getting boosters into everyone. But I notice that they're not vaccinating under 12 yet. Wonder why?

Some countries seem to be more cautious with the myocarditis issue than others. I think relations play into it as well - what type of connects there were with studies and it may speed up getting data/reviewing data especially if the background is already known. Just a bit of a suspicion on my part with that.

Just came across this. Pretty consistent with what I mentioned earlier today regarding rapid tests.

Ontario, where Omicron is responsible for 21 per cent of new cases,

I'm a bit confused on what has been happening. AB has been consistently putting out the Omicron cases as the testing confirmed them, plus there was mention of when there was suspicion of likely Omicron (although not always direct numbers).
I have followed the variant data for Canada. Has ON been crappy at sharing what they knew already? Or is the testing really slow - there certainly is a delay with sequencing but AB seemed to have a fairly high rate factoring in the amount of internation travel when looking at BC, AB, ON and QU. Or did this truly go from very little to a lot that quickly without much knowledge of the inbetween stage of ON health officials?

The interview I heard today with regards to the rapid test, was on CBC radio and their expert was extremely cautious about using rapid tests while explaining why were not seeing them distributed widely in Canada.
She was quite interesting...wish i could remember her name. Anyone else listen to it to day? If I could , I'd post it.

What was her main concern? I don't think they should replace PCR tests, but if they catch additional cases particularly before likely to spread situations that's helpful. We just really need good education with them, it's a way to reduce tisk of spread but isn't a guarantee.

Is this it? Seems to be the only recent CBC thing that came up that matches. I haven't listened but the headline sounds like a pro- rapid test stance.

I dont think so....I think it might have been Nahla Ayed on the CBC RADIO.
She does a talk show every Monday at 2:00 called "Ideas In The Afternoon" (not to be confused with the other CBC radio show "Ideas"
It's a talk show on the radio for a whole hour.
I can only find the show but not the link to play it.
I was listening to it on the radio today.
