Significant other is the common one in groups. As in 'significant others are invited'.
I don't view boyfriend as a juvenile term.

Good question Seeler. When I have liked the chosen partner of an adult kid I referred to them as son/daughter in love. Otherwise I called them the person living with my son/daughter.

I'm open to suggestions. She has a husband - they are not divorced yet, although their separation is permanent. She's been living common law for well over a year now, but it is awkward to refer to him as her 'common law husband'. 'Boyfriend seems juvenile for two middle-aged people, and it me it indicates an early stage of a relationship. And just refering to him by his first name (or a fake name on the internet) doesn't indicate a relationship.

Open to suggestions. What do other people use in this situation?
What do they call each other?

Greetings all!

The room has been busy.

I hope your pup is on the mend BetteTheRed.

Hope your storms/snow have stopped, seeler!

My wife was finally offered a job today. She was laid off 6 months before Carter got hurt. 39 months ago.

How time flies.

I have some projects to finish, then I have to decide if I'm a contractor or an engineer. My heart is probably more in contracting and building with my hands, but I have training in an engineering discipline that few have. Only problem is, I think my old employer has somehow blacklisted me. Two old clients who enthusiastically said they wanted to hire me directly last fall, do not call me back or return my calls. Something is up.

But my wife starts Monday.

Congrats to your wife!

Congratulations to your wife chansen. What kind of work does she do?

Thanks. A bit of everything, I'm afraid. More of a biomaterials scientist at last count, but this job is in SR&ED tax consulting, helping companies apply for tax credits from the CRA for applicable research. She's adaptable and knows a lot of stuff, so her job will be to review company R&D and write applications to get them tax credits they qualify for. There is an entire industry devoted to this. Some independent companies, and some departments in larger accounting firms like KPMG.

That I understand it, at least.

Great news chansen! February brings another new chapter for your family life. It's been such a challenging journey for all of you these past few years ... time for good things to happen now.

Ouch @chanson re the feeling of blacklist. Not good. Had a friend who experienced the same issue.
I'm glad your wife has found employment, and I hope it is good...and maybe it is good for slow transition for your daughter as well, ie you being around home for longer.

It's continuing to be a long week...with highs and lows.
On the plus side after my Dad yelled at me , he phoned 30 min later to apologize. (he was stressed about a doctor's apt that was coming up). Now the apt is over, he is back to himself (almost)
On the plus side he has giving a luncheon gathering a try every other week through CCAc/meals on wheels. On the negative side, it seems someone who is less than desirable has latched onto him. Concerns raised by neighbours, and he is being "hidden" about them, which is always a clue.
On the plus side...his birthday is coming up.on the down side, only 1 grandchildren set other than ours has accepted the invitation to dinner.
On the plus side, I got a logn accomplished and was fresh on Monday, on the downside....had a confrontational meeting that no matter how much I tried to side step, negotiate, reframe, etc, it went on & on. I was not the chair, but, the personality in the room was strong and I was on the phone. I ended up moving to the customer is always right, and we will bite the cost, but, it was hell. (he is also a friend, which doesn't help. just a sign of stress and tired that I could not get a reframe of the conversation / problem to occur)
On the down side, we are experiencing outages (kinda) intermittently (kinda) , and after 30min tonight I think I found the cause, and then spent 2 hrs building the case and recommendations well enough for someone to action.
On the plus side, I found two people to help our team, and they are being funded On the downside....the cost is about3x the rate we currently pay, plus expenses, but, hey....I may get a life back....which is the biggest plus size. .

oh, and on the down side, I am flying again next week...bah humbug.

Snow storm predicted for last night and today - fourth in eight days!

But this storm apparently is tracking south of us. This morning broke with only six or eight inches of light powderly snow on the car and driveway - hardly enough to get the blower out for. We'll wait and see what the day brings before calling it a storm.

Biggest problem right now is where is the city to put the stuff - high snow banks on both sides of the streets narrow them to barely two lanes. High snowbanks at the ends of driveways and street corners are impossible to see over or around. Street crews are so busy just keeping the streets passable that they have little time for keeping them safe. It's going to be up to the drivers to exercise caution (and pray that the other drivers do the same) for the time being.

Please be careful Seeler, (and Seeler guy driving around).

I love that kidn of snow, I love the feeling of it , but, I also am not oblivious to the challenge it brings many, including those that become housebound due to the inability of their assistance devices being able to navigate the snow (or sloppily shovelled sidewalks).

What happens in a thaw, @Seeler - will there be flooding with such a huge amount of snow?

@chansen - yay Mrs. chansen! Glad to hear that you have a new job to begin - can be exciting and scary at the same time. chansen - hope things pick up for you in the engineering department - but . . . you are one fine carpenter :).

Pinga - your life is so very busy . . . glad to see you see so much positive within the negative.

Woke up to another cool winter morning here - the temperature has warmed up to -21C with "realfeel" with the wind children of -37C - glad I don't have to go out today (unless I really want to).

Continuing to work on my projects . . . but I no sooner get one stroked off the list and another appears. I have my service ready for the 15th - but I'm sure between now and then I will change it somewhat, but at least it is done if I don't get back to it (between now and then have a trip into the city for a medical appointment).

Have a great day everyone!

Beloved - every spring in NB there is a flood watch along the rivers. I live on a hill, but the St. John river periodically floods its banks sometimes backing up over several main streets, surrounding large hotels, office buildings, shopping complexes as well as basements.

Our recent snow seems to be mainly light and probably doesn't have a high water content - unlike the heavy packed water drenched snow that sometimes falls. I think the snow that fell this past week will gradually settle and if we have a slow spring it shouldn't create a problem. However a lot can change before late March or April. An ice jam, or heavy rains along with warm temperatures can melt a lot of snow in a short time and bring the water up in a hurry.

Today's snow seems to have amounted to even less than predicted. Still, it calls for careful driving.

@chansen congrats to your wife. I'm sorry that you may have been blacklisted - that's hard to take especially if you don't know why or by whom.

You NBers have been hit hard @Seeler. I know martimers often do but it seems a little unreal this year. My friend in Gros Morne gets more snow than I could every imagine. Her photos are incredible.

I'm glad you can see positives too Pinga.

It's -14C in Ottawa right now before wind chill and that's at 2:45 with the sun shining brightly! It is very slippery out there and we are setting records for number of accidents - a record I'd rather not see.

Seeler, did you see the video of the train blasting through the snow in Sackvillee It was pretty awesome.as he worked thr

It is cold here, but, not as cold as some of you are reporting. Justme, the roads are clear here, and I am thankful for that.

Had a great call with my Dad yesterday. He went to the lunch run by CCAC at a local community centre. A volunteer driver picked him up, along with two others. They were friendly and put him at ease right away. He explained he had to take a cab to a doctor's and leave the lunch early and they took great care of him. He had a wonderful lunch, and had a great visit. He was raving about how good it was.
Now, this is why that was a great call. When he yelled at me, it was because he had decided he didn't want to go to the lunch, and I was asking clarifying questions to find out why. I knew it was about stress. I also knew that if he went, it would reduce his stress longterm as it gives him one more set of people to talk to, to have stories from, to have things to talk about. So..... for him, it has always been about his anxiety blocking his ability to do things or go places We have had huge strides since I have been his primary support; however, every so often circumstances such as a doctor's appt building stress, stop his ability to see how to solve problems. I am so happy that he went, as now he is looking forward to the next one, and blocking his calendar --- WIN!

Yes, to the train. I love trains - and at one time I loved winter. I'm sure that even five years ago I would have been calling this 'an old fashion winter', ten years ago I was cross country skiing, or hiking, or simply playing in the snow with my grandchildren.
Yesterday we picked up grandson after his science club (an extra curricular activity at his school this month). We dropped him off at his after-school 'Y' program. He could hardly wait to get his snowpants on and join the other kids climbing on the huge snow banks plowed to the edge of the parking lot. At one time I would have been out there with him.

The snow is beautiful - the sun shining today.

It's good to hear that your father is getting out and enjoying the outings. We have 'wheels to meals' in this area. Volunteers pick up clients and drive them to community centers for a hot meal and social activities. It complements - rather than replaces - 'meals on wheels'.
