How was church today?

Interesting this morning. One of my fav student ministers came back to participate (it was more than "deliver the sermon"). Chose Ps 137 as text, and I was reader. Jesus, how do you read those words about "dashing children against rocks"? without flinching, and he so incorporated that flinch into talking about grief and rage and diaspora and lament.

Other than my terrible text, twas lovely to distantly see 'everyone' - 7-8 people, lol, especially Jeffrey's covid curls, lol And I got to visit with his dog Max in the office for a minute.

There are ladies of the nite and then ... Men a' night ... both casting shadows and doubts! --- did E' Mus?

The result of the many that would rather not know .... thus we don't know much and I cannot confirm that ... one way or the alternate ... being intellect is lacking by denial!

Hello dear friends,
On the 28 of February, I had the opportunity to preach at my congregation for the first time. If you want to take a look, the video is below, and the sermon itself starts at 4:49.

Hey, look who's back! Nice to see you Giancarlo. Hope the pandemic hasn't been too rough on you. Will give that a boo later (technically still "at work" whatever that means in 2021).

I must confess that I am very anxious to get vaccinated because I can't tolerate the isolation anymore. I, too, have a work appointment soon, and afterwards, I will be back to read the news and update you guys. :)

Pinga...I am right there beside you, suffering a little ennui. I was listening to about 3 sermons a week, and at first, I thought it was great. Now, I am becoming too critical. I think we are really missing community; sermons are only part of our 'church' experience. I just finished a Bible Study on the Book of Acts (so interesting!) and again I realized the importance of community and caring leadership. A face on a screen, no matter how encouraging the words, just doesn't cut it. That is one reason I gave up the LLWL job...My main job was to deliver sermons, and I just don't think that is enough these days.

Since the pandemic started, I have gone full circle twice.

Initially keen about online worship, losing interest, taking a break and then returning.

Right now I seem to be mid cycle yet again. Contemplating another break.

Okay...I have to take back some of my thoughts. I just listened to an on-line sermon that was SO powerful. It had all of 24 views, but deserves much more. It helps that I know the minister, and I know her very, very sincere faith.

WE had a technical clusterf.....

Just after we started the stream I took out my phone to test that all was well (as I do every week). Nice clear picture---but no sound. Found out that the program we use would not allow us to turn the audio on for some reaason. Tried restarting both the program and the machine. No luck. Sent my wife home to get our web cam with the thought that we could at least record and upload later but with no time taken to ensure we had that audio input balanced the recording was impossible to listen to. SIGH
Hopefully the venfor responds to my email today so we can gt things sorted out before heading into Holy Week

Holy Cow that makes some occasions awkward!

I've been much the same. I haven't participated in our current congregation worship services. I did participate in a mid-week chat group. I haven't done that for awhile. They do have an outreach and I've had lovely phone conversations with a woman who calls every so often to check in.

That's too bad. Your set up was quite nice. Here's hoping it's a fixable glitch.

Special service for lipreaders only?

At first Hillhurst was doing live services on facebook. They have moved to pre-recorded services on youtube. Some weeks the sermon is still good, but I miss the live experience. I still tune in though as the music usually helps me to carry on. Living Spirit United has amalgamated with Hillhurst so this Sunday we had a lovely version of Eagles Wings by the Living Spirit choir.

I agree You just never know - the music at Hillhurst is quite extraordinary. I do love listening in. And I find the services capture and hold my attention, and usually leave me with something to ponder or work on in the coming week. So I continue to listen every week.

I am quite fed up with online worship - hard to focus, and the wide array of options makes things more complicated than they should be. I look forward to going to church in person again; I think it will be a much more valued (and valuable) experience.

Agreed, but it's surely a vast improvement on the "nothing" that would have replaced in-person worship even 10-20 years ago.
