@ChemGal - I purchased some hand sanitizer online. It came from Hong Kong with a 99.9 rating.

The active ingredient is active silver ion??? No mention of alcohol -so I'm suspicious.
What is this stuff I've purchased -and will it be a suitable hand sanitizer?

I'll check into it, but my suspicion is no. Silver has antimicrobial properties, but I've not heard of it used in a hand sanitizer and just because something is antimicrobial doesn't mean it's effective for viruses.

There are no hand sanitizes on Health Canada's page that contain silver. For disinfectants there's just Silver Dihydrogen Citrate.
Colloidal silver is mentioned as one of the common products that has false claims associated.

There is a whole new corona scam industry. Online purchases of masks that never get delivered.
Germany had a fund to support small businesses and someone had gotten a website that had the same name, but just two words reversed. So businesses put their applications into the fake website and the scammers went and got the real money with their info onto their own accounts.

Well I was wondering when this was going to happen. It's all fine and dandy praising health care workers for the good they do....but there is another side to it when the expectation by the gov't is for workers to make do with the protection you've got or don't have. Like the article says, we wouldn't send a fireman into a fire without proper protection, or a policeman without bullets in his gun if he needed them.....so why is it acceptable for healthcare workers to just "suck it up" and make do?
It's very common for nurses to feel guilty if they complain because that may look like they don't care and that very attitude is used by those in charge to make one feel guilty if one protests loudly.
Good on these nurses:

As per NSguidelines, a surgical mask is standard in combination with a face shield. N95 s are for procedures producing aerosol, like intubation. Even N 95 is only 95% safe. Another thing is how do you prevent yourself being infected by your own mask if you have to use it a whole week? That seems to me impossible to do.
That, I believe is US specific. Haven’t heard from places in Canada that nurses have to keep using the same equipment for that long.
Heard from Germany that they are now sterilizing N95 masks that were originally one time use. I can imagine that that might be a bit stressful, too.

We're investigating that technology, too. A company has applied for FDA approval for a process that can sterilize an N95 up to 10 times or something like that. Someone mentioned it in a meeting yesterday.

Ugh - this puts things into perspective with the social distancing measures.
The outbreak related to Cargill (meat packing plant) - 484, not all workers, some are household contacts.
Edmonton cases - 438
And Cargill isnt in a major city (although some of the cases are in Calgary's count, due to where people live).
A woman in my walking group is married to a trucker - who drives to Alberta with a partner - often picking up meat from the return journey. He's retiring at the end of April & she said he had one more 'meat trip' scheduled, but the plant had an outbreak - that was last week when we talked. Guess it was probably the Cargill plant. I read in the Star today that this plant supplies 36% of Canada's beef ... so that's a big hit to the supply chain I think.

I believe there's a Cargill plant in Guelph that supplies meat to supermarkets and a smaller one in Woodstock (pet food I think)....maybe more. I suppose Ontario requires large amounts.

Last night on the news, they showed a clip from Clean Works - a company in Guelph that developed a UV sterilization unit for food after a listeria outbreak a few years ago. They've adapted it now for use with N95 masks adding hydrogen peroxide to the process - have sent two units off for final approval testing & just awaiting go ahead to ramp up production. Seems potentially promising. Clēan Fruits and Vegetables with the Clēan Flow Mini Process Will be interesting to see what the future brings us.

That may be the one that was discussed at work. Our RTs need to wear N95s when doing home vent, BIPAP, and other procedures that can produce aerosols.

This reminds me of an article I read about sunlight and it's UV rays being able to destroy the COVID 19 virus. Apparently it's false. Sitting out in the sun will not destroy it on our skin as we would need so much UV rays that it would damage our skin.
Doing it on masks would be a different story I'm sure. They could probably zap them with all the UV radiation they want and that would destroy the Virus.

That's how UV water treatment works, too. My aunt and uncle use a UV system so they can drink the lake water (they winterized their cottage and live on the lake year-round) rather than having to visit town wells for water.

Part of the reason any life on Mars will have to be sub-surface is that the planet has no ozone layer and very little atmosphere period. UV, along the other radiation that gets through due to its lack of a magnetic field, basically sterilizes the surface. So I'm betting any organism can be destroyed with enough UV.

I looked this up recently, because you can buy CPAP cleaning machines working with UV. The type of UV is one that is prevented from our atmosphere to come down to earth in significant amounts. However, they did find out that rooms exposed to sunlight do have less germs in the dust than rooms in the dark. But not enough to sterilize anything. The saying ( which Trump also said at some point) that with spring weather Covid will go away, cannot be right, because both Italy and Spain have wonderful warm weather which did not prevent them from a major outbreak.
