Novel Coronavirus

And all our physical distancing, closures etc are striving to help our health system avoid this kind of chaos ... so far so good. Must be quite horrendous for all those in NYC area - and other places too.
What I found shocking was that she is working a Covid unit and has to use one mask for five shifts!
We are getting one mask per day for non- covid patient load and that is manageable ( you can get a second one if yours get soiled). My feeling to have one on a covid unit for that long is- what she basically says- everyone will get it, its just a matter of when.

I also heard, snowbirds are usually coming back mid April- so the question is, how many cases are we getting for the end of April.

If we're lucky, they had it down there and got counted in Florida's stats.

Are they allowed to come back in April if they didn't leave when they were told?

Yes, but they will fall under the new, strict self-isolation rules. Meaning a visit from the cops if they step out of line. And they have to satisfy immigration that they have a suitable place to self-isolate or they're in a hotel room for two weeks.

Heard a doctor on CBC this morning say that he doesn't think 14 days is enough.....he thinks 30 days.
Surprisingly he was very positive about the social distancing that's taken place and believes it would have been worse if we hadn't.

That is for sure a long time to use one mask ... I suppose one thing we might eventually learn out of this is how many uses a mask can manage, and whether there are ways to safely disinfect them. It's always been assumed to be single use in the past - perhaps not actually necessary? Time will tell.

I'm glad you're getting one mask per day, that's what I'm hearing around here too.

I see this out of Alberta...I'm afraid this is going to kill more people, or back them into a tight corner with no options to live, than the virus itself. This is freaking horrible. If they really want to save the lives of seniors and vulnerable people, do something about this.

They are at least doing essential things. I know someone who lost his home care because of this. They are actually ok with it though, he's capabilities have improved and his risk isn't great for being exposed (on oxygen). For those continuing to get the service it's risky. 1 worker will see many people, in close contact. It's like with the long term care home workers working at more than location. Hopefully with more people being at home that can relieve some of the pressure there.

Based on current projections in BC, they could phase in 60% of what was restricted and still not see much difference in cases. The point of isolating and distancing was not to stop people from catching covid entirely, but to slow it down so as not to overwhelm hospitals. We haven't seen that here...but there are a lot of people waiting to get healthcare because everything was reserved for covid cases. And most cases have not required hospitalization. They will start to relax things in May, it looks like.
There’s even fewer cases on Vancouver Island. I’m afraid we will be tinder for the coming fire.

Research on the bug and work on a vaccine is being carried out. There are now a few reports based on measuring antibodies. The results aren’t always what’s expected. But things are changing quickly.

Here‘s a link that may interest some. A married couple, both biologists, discuss new things and take questions (they’re in Portland, Oregon. I think they’re doing it once or twice a week. I include the link. I don’t know if it will work. Search for “Bret Weinstein” on Youtube if my link is useless.

I'm not a big fan of Weinstein's science, or at least the 'scientists' he hangs out with, but thanks anyway.

His science veers to close to social Darwinism in his evolutionary theory and a couple of his buddies are race and gender baiting 'scientists'. He's from the Intellectual Dark Web. I would not trust his projections and/ or that they're not tied to politics and ideology.

Ugh - this puts things into perspective with the social distancing measures.
The outbreak related to Cargill (meat packing plant) - 484, not all workers, some are household contacts.
Edmonton cases - 438
And Cargill isnt in a major city (although some of the cases are in Calgary's count, due to where people live).

Really? I don’t have much background in biology. I couldn‘t possibly judge his take on evolution. Politically they seem liberal. They don’t like Trump.
