Just ran across this on another site, from Pantheos:

Why Are You NOT Evangelical?

The problem with that is that it lets the conservative fundamentalist crowd co-opt "Evangelical". The fact is, the UCCan and related denominations are supposed to be "evangelical" so why not some effort to reclaim the word. That's basically what liberal evangelicals like Brian McLaren are doing with the emergent movement in the US.

I'm very mad at the wrong use of the word Evangelical. This was the name the Lutheran and Reformed churches were given originally in Germany and Switzerland, in use until this days. Nothing to do with "born-again" stuff.
My ELCIC parish is dropping "Evangelical" from their official name, and that's very sad in my opinion.
An interesting article about this matter: The “e” word - Living Lutheran

It is, indeed, sad that the word 'Evangelical' has somehow picked up so many 'pigeonholes' with it. The word simply comes from the Greek for 'Good News', basically. But over the last generation or two the word has come to be associated with so many 'anti-' movements that in the ears of many, 'Evangelical' becomes more an indication of what you stand against, rather than what you stand for.
How could we go about the process of reclaiming the word and restoring it to its original, intended meaning?

I'd say using it and letting people know the original, true sense of the word.

In Brazil, I was doing my part by educating everyone I could about its meaning. So the person would ask what's my religion or denomination, and I'd say I'm an Evangelical Lutheran. Answers were almost invariably like: "So you're an Evangelical?". And I'd go on saying yes and no. And explain all the thing. It's tiring, but I wouldn't give it up.

In Canada is a bit tricky because people are usually more discreet and many won't ask anything. But every time I have the opportunity I explain I'm not Evangelical as the Trump voters...

I'd say it would require the evangelical churches to do some public education. Hold some big events, maybe under the banner of the CCC or similar alliance, in which they talk about what it really means to be "evangelical" and in which they clearly differentiate themselves from the modern evangelical movement while still showing how they remain faithful to the evangelical tradition of the past.

Odd thought, maybe get a leader(s) from some mainstream denominations from the evangelical tradition, e.g. @RichardBott from the UCCan, to do TEDtalks or similar on evangelical history and traditions.
That would be great. The spreading power of internet would play a role.

Interesting. Lutheran is really not used in Germany. “Evangelisch” is more in contrast to “ “katholisch”, which are the two main denominations. “ Evangelicals” in the north american sense would be “Freikirchen” in Germany meaning “ free churches”- not belonging to any of the main denominations.

Until the 90s, in Brazil, Evangelical (Evangélico in Portuguese) meant the same than Evangelisch in German. It suddenly changed following the American trend. It was really hard when we had to start to explain to people we weren't pentecostal or born again etc.

Which is the way to properly adjust a roll of TP? Over the top or from the back?

Use on the up ended part is best!

Getting that end up is harder when older and wiser ... and then those with the ends up won't know what's gone down ... and hate proceeds as love was not lost but went down the vale ... with a cold chill!
